%windir%System32wpdmtpus.dll
On most Windows installations, %windir% refers to C:Windows. The exact file version, architecture, and related components vary between Windows releases, so do not treat an old version list as a universal reference for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
This file is a Windows driver component. It is not normally repaired by installing a standalone runtime. It is repaired through Windows servicing, device-driver repair, application repair, or system recovery, depending on the symptom.
Match the cause to the symptom
The full error message and the moment it appears are more useful than the filename alone.
| What you observe | Most likely area | Start with |
|---|---|---|
An application says wpdmtpus.dll is missing when it opens |
Damaged Windows component or application dependency | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| The error appears only when connecting a phone or camera | MTP/WPD device installation | Device Manager repair |
| Windows reports the error during startup | Windows servicing, quarantine, or disk damage | Check Protection history, then DISM and SFC |
| The file disappeared after antivirus activity | Quarantine or a false positive | Verify the path and signature before restoring |
| Only one program fails while other MTP functions work | Application-specific corruption | Repair or reinstall that program |
| The message says “specified module could not be found” | The named file or one of its dependencies may be unavailable | Repair Windows and inspect the event context |
| The issue began after an update or driver installation | Regression or damaged servicing state | System Restore, Windows repair, or driver rollback |
| A manually copied DLL was recently used | Wrong architecture, build, or damaged replacement | Remove the copied file and repair Windows |
Common reported wording includes “The program can’t start because wpdmtpus.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because wpdmtpus.dll was not found,” and “Error loading wpdmtpus.dll.” These are reported error variants, not a complete Microsoft error catalog.
Before changing anything, record:
- The complete error text.
- The program that displays it.
- Whether a phone, camera, or media device was connected.
- Whether the issue started after Windows Update, a driver update, cleanup software, antivirus activity, a crash, or an application reinstall.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The path of any file you found named
wpdmtpus.dll.
That information determines whether you are repairing Windows, a device installation, or one application.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending update can contain repairs for protected Windows components and device infrastructure. Complete this step before using command-line repair tools.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application or reconnect the MTP device.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the error disappears, the component was likely replaced or the underlying servicing issue was corrected. If it remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Optional driver updates can be useful when Device Manager identifies a device problem, but wpdmtpus.dll itself is a protected Windows component.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair path for a genuinely missing, damaged, or replaced wpdmtpus.dll.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which gives SFC a usable source for replacing damaged protected files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt in the results.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
When DISM succeeds, you should see a message indicating that the restore operation completed successfully and that the operation completed successfully. The exact wording can vary by Windows build.

Run SFC
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
SFC may report that:
- It found no integrity violations.
- It found corrupt files and repaired them.
- It found corrupt files but could not repair some of them.
Restart Windows after a successful repair, then test the application or device again.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repeated repair attempts by scanning for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC tools remain the direct repair path.
If DISM fails
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not download wpdmtpus.dll separately. The component store itself may need a valid Windows installation source.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Record the exact DISM error, then use Microsoft’s SFC and DISM repair guidance for the Windows release and installation media you have. A repair source must match the installed Windows build closely enough for DISM to use it correctly. Guessing at a source or mixing files from another release can create a second servicing problem.
If SFC still cannot repair the file after DISM succeeds:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again if the first operation reported repairs.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Review the CBS log if you need to identify the unrepaired component.
Do not extract a random DLL from the log and copy it into a system folder.
Fix 3: Repair the phone, camera, or MTP device installation
Use this branch when the error appears only while connecting a portable device, or when the device appears with a warning icon in Device Manager.
First disconnect the phone, camera, or media player. Microsoft’s Device Manager procedure cautions that the device should be unplugged before removing its installation.
- Disconnect the portable device from the USB cable.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Select View on the menu bar.
- Select Show hidden devices.
- Expand Portable Devices.
- Also inspect Universal Serial Bus controllers and any category containing a warning icon.
- Identify the affected device. It may appear by model name, as an MTP device, or as an unknown device.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- If Windows offers to remove driver software, read the prompt carefully. Do not remove unrelated driver packages.
- Close Device Manager.
- Restart Windows.
- Unlock the phone or camera before reconnecting it.
- Reconnect it with a known-good USB cable.
- Choose a file-transfer or MTP mode on the device if it asks which USB mode to use.
- Allow Windows to detect and install the device.
Check whether the device appears in File Explorer and whether the application can communicate with it. If Device Manager continues to show a warning icon, open the device’s Properties and read the Device status field. The error code there can identify a broader USB, driver, or hardware problem.
If the device manufacturer supplies an official Windows driver or connection package for the exact model, obtain it from the manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not replace a Windows component with a similarly named file from an archive.
Outbyte Driver Updater can make the manual work of identifying stale or mismatched drivers easier by showing the driver problems it detects; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the device manufacturer’s official package or Windows Update remains the preferred source when one is available.

In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that refers to
wpdmtpus.dll. - Check the original path, detection details, date, and action taken.
The expected Windows component path is:
%windir%System32wpdmtpus.dll
Before restoring a quarantined file, verify that:
- The original location was the expected Windows system location.
- The file is identified as a Microsoft Windows component.
- Its digital signature is valid.
- The quarantine event is consistent with a false positive rather than a newly created file in an application folder.
To inspect a file’s signature, right-click the file, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab when it is available. A signature check is useful, but it does not replace a malware scan or Windows component repair.
If the file is absent, damaged, or fails validation, use DISM and SFC rather than restoring it blindly. Run a Microsoft Defender scan if the file repeatedly disappears or other system files are being changed.
Fix 5: Repair the application that reports the error
If the error appears in only one application while Windows can still access the phone, camera, or media player normally, the application may have damaged files or an incompatible installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the program’s own repair process first:
- Close the application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options when available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program and test it.
Some desktop applications instead provide Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair in their installer or launcher. Use that option if available.
If repair does not help:
- Back up the program’s settings, projects, profiles, or other personal data.
- Uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application vendor’s official source.
- Install the current version.
- Test the program before restoring optional plugins or modified files.
There is no verified basis for treating wpdmtpus.dll as a file owned by a particular third-party application. An application can mention the file because it uses Windows MTP functions, but that does not make the application the file’s owner.
If multiple programs report the same error, return to Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and antivirus checks instead of reinstalling every application.
Fix 6: Check architecture and file location
Windows can run 32-bit applications on 64-bit systems, but the process and its dependencies still need compatible architecture. A 32-bit DLL copied beside a 64-bit process, or an x64 DLL copied beside a 32-bit program, will not reliably solve a loading error.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
On Windows 10, the same information is under Settings > System > About.
The official manifest identifies %windir%System32wpdmtpus.dll as the Windows component path. Do not assume that every Windows edition has an identical copy in SysWOW64, and do not copy the file into both directories.
If you recently copied a DLL manually:
- Remove the copied file from the application folder only if you can identify it as the manually added file.
- Do not delete the original protected Windows file.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
The known legacy metadata for this file includes 32-bit Windows 8-era entries, but those entries do not establish the correct version, hash, or architecture for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. Always use the file that Windows servicing provides for the installed build.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the appropriate COM registration entry point. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

Running a command such as this without knowing that registration is required is not a safe fix:
regsvr32 wpdmtpus.dll
It may produce an error, change registration state without solving the underlying problem, or distract from a damaged component store. Older WPD troubleshooting records discuss registration in particular legacy installations, but modern repair should begin with Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and Device Manager.
Use regsvr32 only when official documentation for the specific component and Windows configuration explicitly requires it. A missing or corrupt protected Windows file should be restored through Windows servicing.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
Do not download wpdmtpus.dll from a random DLL archive and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That approach can fail because:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may have the wrong Windows build.
- It may have the wrong architecture.
- It may have an invalid or missing Microsoft signature.
- It may lack a dependency that caused the original error.
- It can hide a damaged Windows component store.
- It may cause a different application or device to load an incompatible copy.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, an appropriate Windows installation source used according to Microsoft’s repair guidance, Device Manager, and the official support channel for the affected device or application.
What “specified module could not be found” really means
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wpdmtpus.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
This is especially important when:
- The file exists in the expected Windows directory.
- The error appears only in one application.
- The application is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows.
- The issue began after manual DLL copying.
- The message appears during an MTP driver installation.
Repair Windows first, then repair the affected application or device installation. Do not add unrelated Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX packages, or .NET versions unless the error names one of those components or the application’s official documentation requires it. These packages are generally unrelated to the Windows WPD component.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change and the earlier configuration worked.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. Back up important files before proceeding.
If no suitable restore point exists, or System Restore does not correct the error, continue to Windows recovery options or an in-place Windows repair installation. Back up personal data first.
When DISM and SFC still cannot repair Windows
Escalate when:
- DISM repeatedly fails.
- SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files.
- The file disappears again after repair.
- Other protected Windows files are also damaged.
- Windows cannot install updates.
- The disk reports errors or the computer crashes.
Run Microsoft Defender scans and check disk health. If the Windows installation remains damaged, use System Restore, an in-place repair installation, or Windows recovery options. An in-place repair can preserve personal files and installed programs when performed with the appropriate Windows installation media, but follow Microsoft’s current instructions for the installed edition and build.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFAQ
Is wpdmtpus.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows Portable Devices component. A file with that name in an unexpected folder, with an invalid signature, or repeatedly recreated after deletion deserves investigation. Verify its path and signature rather than assuming every copy is safe.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. wpdmtpus.dll belongs to Windows Portable Devices and the MTP driver infrastructure. Reinstall those runtimes only when another error specifically identifies them or the affected application documents that dependency.
Where should wpdmtpus.dll be?
Microsoft’s component manifest places it at:
%windir%System32wpdmtpus.dll
Do not assume that copying it to another system directory is safe.
Why does an application mention a Windows file?
The application may use Windows functions for communicating with a phone, camera, or media device. It can therefore fail when a Windows component is damaged even though the application did not ship the component.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I enable a Windows Feature?
There is no general Windows Feature switch that replaces a missing wpdmtpus.dll. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and Device Manager instead.
Should I run regsvr32?
Not as a first-line fix. It is a registration command, not a general DLL restoration tool. Use it only when official instructions for the exact installation require it.
Is manually copying the file ever justified?
Only for advanced offline recovery using a known-good file from the identical Windows build and architecture, preferably after SFC identifies the component. For normal troubleshooting, Windows servicing is safer.
What if the error appears only when I connect my phone?
Repair the device installation in Device Manager, reconnect the unlocked phone, select file-transfer mode, and allow Windows Update or the device manufacturer’s official package to reinstall the driver.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the correct order?
Install Windows updates and restart, run DISM, run SFC, check antivirus quarantine, repair the MTP device if relevant, and repair or reinstall the affected application if only that program fails. Use System Restore or Windows repair when those steps cannot restore the component.
