wpnservice.dll may appear in messages such as “The program can’t start because wpnservice.dll is missing,” “The code execution cannot proceed because wpnservice.dll was not found,” or “The specified module could not be found.”
You may also see “Error loading wpnservice.dll,” “Cannot find C:WindowsSystem32wpnservice.dll,” or “wpnservice.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
wpnservice.dll is a Microsoft Windows system component used by the Windows Push Notifications System Service, whose service name is WpnService. It helps Windows host notification features such as toast, tile, badge, and raw notifications through the Windows Notification Service.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal native location is:
C:WindowsSystem32wpnservice.dll
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. The safest repair is to install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by System File Checker:
#1 Best Overall
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
wpnservice.dll is part of Windows. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file, so installing those runtimes is not the correct first repair.
What causes the error
The message does not always mean the named file has been deleted. Common causes include:
- Windows component-store or system-file corruption
- A failed update or interrupted servicing operation
- Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product quarantining the file
- Cleanup software deleting or altering a protected Windows component
- Malware or disk corruption
- A file with the wrong architecture, location, version, or signature
- A missing dependency when Windows reports that “the specified module could not be found”
- A damaged Windows installation or user profile
WpnService normally runs under svchost.exe. WpnUserService, sometimes shown with a suffix such as WpnUserService_xxxxx, is a separate per-user notification service. A problem with that service is not the same as a missing wpnservice.dll.
Verify the file before repairing Windows
Check the path
- Press
Windows+E. - Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Look for
wpnservice.dll. - Right-click it, select Properties, and open the Details tab.
- Check the file version and product information.
- Open Digital Signatures and confirm that the signer is Microsoft.
Windows versions and servicing levels use different system-file versions. An older 64-bit entry such as 10.0.14393.0 should not be treated as the universal current version.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system binaries. Windows redirects 32-bit applications through SysWOW64, but do not assume that a separate copy of this exact file must exist there. Check the affected Windows installation rather than copying files between folders.
Check whether the service exists
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Push Notifications System Service.
- Double-click it and note its status and startup configuration.
A stopped service is not proof that the DLL is missing. Do not disable WpnService as a repair attempt because notification-dependent features may stop working.
Fix 1: Update Windows, restart, and repair its components
This is the most appropriate first fix because the file belongs to Windows itself.
Install updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not immediately require it.
- Repeat the original action that produced the error.
If the problem started immediately after an update, use the update troubleshooter and review Settings > Windows Update > Update history.

Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress can pause for an extended period.
- Restart the computer when DISM completes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for protected system files.
The manual process can involve repeatedly checking logs and determining which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows detected problems, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the direct repair path.
Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes and Windows has restarted:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or Windows feature again.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still cannot repair Windows, continue to the recovery options below.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use matching Windows installation media. The drive letter and image index vary, so do not copy the following example without adapting it:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
The installation source must match the installed Windows edition and sufficiently match its build.
Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
If the file disappeared after a security scan, check whether it was quarantined rather than manually restoring a replacement.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
wpnservice.dll. - Check the exact path, detection name, and action.
- Restore the file only if the path is the expected Windows location, the file is Microsoft-signed, and the detection is demonstrably a false positive.
Use Allow on device only when the evidence supports a false positive. Do not restore an unknown, unsigned, or third-party replacement. Afterward, run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC so Windows can restore the correct component.
If malware is possible, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and consider an offline scan. Do not solve a suspected infection by downloading a DLL.

Fix 3: Repair Windows after a failed update
If the error began directly after Windows Update:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Update history.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Remove the most recent appropriate update.
- Restart and test.
If Windows cannot start normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment and choose:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates
For Windows 11 systems where the option is available, use the repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported.
Fix 4: Check the disk and recent system changes
A failing drive, interrupted upgrade, cleanup utility, or unauthorized deletion can damage Windows files.

- Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start.
- Check Windows Logs > System around the time the error occurred.
- Look for servicing, disk, file-system, or application errors.
- Back up important files.
- Run a full malware scan.
- Run DISM and SFC as described above.
If disk errors continue, repair the storage problem before repeatedly replacing system files. A repaired DLL will not remain reliable on a failing drive.
Fix 5: Rule out a profile-specific problem
If notifications or the affected operation fail only in one Windows account:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create a temporary local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Test the same operation.
If the error does not appear there, the Windows installation may be intact while the original profile is damaged. Move personal data to a repaired profile only after confirming that the issue is profile-specific. Do not use a new account as a substitute for repairing a system-wide missing DLL.
Do drivers, Windows Features, or runtimes help
Usually, no.
wpnservice.dll is not normally repaired by installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Enabling random entries in Turn Windows features on or off is also unlikely to restore it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 is usually wrong here
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. wpnservice.dll is a service DLL hosted by svchost.exe, with service-oriented exports rather than the normal registration entry point.
Running this is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 wpnservice.dll
It may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not show that Windows needs a different copy of the DLL. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Do not download or copy the DLL
Avoid DLL download sites sites, random archives, file-sharing pages, and copies taken from another computer. A replacement can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, dependencies, signature, or malicious content. It can also conceal the underlying component-store corruption.
Use Windows Update, Microsoft’s built-in repair commands, matching Microsoft installation media, Windows Recovery, or an in-place repair installation. If the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing, the message may refer to a dependent module. Record the application name, exact error code, file path, and related Event Viewer entry before taking further action.
When to repair or reinstall Windows
Escalate when:
- DISM cannot repair the component store
- SFC repeatedly reports unrepairable corruption
- The file is missing after a confirmed Defender false positive
- Multiple Windows components fail
- Updates repeatedly roll back
- Disk or malware problems continue
- The error affects every user account
Back up personal data first. Then consider System Restore, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, or an in-place installation using matching Microsoft media. A clean reset or full reinstall is more disruptive and should be a last resort rather than the first response to one missing system DLL.

Is wpnservice.dll safe?
A copy in the expected Windows directory with a valid Microsoft digital signature is consistent with the Windows component. Location and signature matter because malware can use the same filename elsewhere.
Is it part of an application or Windows?
It is a Microsoft Windows component used by WpnService, not a normal third-party application runtime.
Is WpnUserService the same thing?
No. WpnUserService is a separate per-user notification service. Repairing its settings does not replace a missing wpnservice.dll.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Those packages are not the correct first fix for this Windows service DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. This service DLL is not normally repaired through DLL registration.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
Check its exact path, Microsoft signature, Windows architecture, Event Viewer details, dependent modules, and the error code. “The specified module could not be found” can identify a missing dependency rather than the named file itself.
