The open-source project targets a limited set of decrypted Windows Phone 7 and 8 XNA games. It has an Android build, but the visible upstream release is labeled Alpha 0.0.1, Android support is Vulkan-based, and game compatibility is uneven. It is best treated as an experimental preservation tool for people who already have lawful game files—not a plug-and-play way to revive the Windows Phone Store.
What WPR actually does
WPR stands for Windows Phone Runner. It loads decrypted XAP packages for Windows Phone 7 and 8 games built with Microsoft’s XNA framework. The project is closer to a game runner or compatibility layer than an operating-system emulator: it does not recreate the complete Windows Phone interface, Store, or services. Its project documentation describes the app categories it targets and the limits of that approach.
There are Android and Windows builds on the WPR GitHub releases page. The visible upstream release is labeled Alpha 0.0.1. WPR can also show some achievement-style pop-ups locally, but that is not a restoration of Xbox Live: do not expect online sign-in, leaderboards, multiplayer, cloud saves, or licensing to behave as they did on a Windows Phone.
Which games are listed as supported?
The upstream release page names the following games as tested or supported. A listing is a starting point, not a promise of flawless play on every Android device.

Compatibility can mean anything from launching and playing acceptably to booting with visual or control problems. The release notes flag the two specific issues above, but do not establish a universal pass rate or device-by-device results. A September 2022 report said 15 of 33 games tested by the developer were running properly at that time; that is historical context, not a current compatibility percentage (Phandroid, September 27, 2022). Check the current upstream release notes for the project’s published list.
What WPR does not support
“Windows Phone game” covers different software generations and frameworks. WPR’s stated target is decrypted WP7/8 XNA XAPs, not every app that once appeared on a Windows Phone.
- Silverlight apps: These are a different app category and are not generally supported by WPR.
- Native Windows Phone 8 apps: Apps relying on ARM-native binaries or platform-specific APIs are outside the practical XNA-runner scope.
- Windows 10 Mobile and UWP apps: These belong to a separate generation and package ecosystem. An APPX is not interchangeable with an XNA XAP.
- The phone operating system: WPR does not provide a simulated Windows Phone home screen, Store, or complete system environment.
These distinctions are important when diagnosing a failed import: having a file with a Windows Phone connection does not mean it is an XNA game package WPR can run.

What you need before installing
- An Android phone with working Vulkan support. The cited upstream release identifies Vulkan as the officially supported Android graphics path; that requirement does not guarantee that every Vulkan-capable device or game will work.
- The Android APK downloaded from the official WPR GitHub releases page. It is distributed outside Google Play and is marked alpha.
- A complete, decrypted Windows Phone 7/8 XNA XAP for a game you are entitled to use. Encrypted, corrupt, or wrong-framework packages may fail.
- Enough free storage for the APK and game files, and Android permission to install an app from the browser or file manager you use.
Use files you own and backed up yourself, or files obtained through a lawful preservation source where permitted. “Abandoned” does not automatically mean a commercial game is public domain. This article does not link to game archives; avoid bundles that distribute copyrighted games or repackage WPR.
Install WPR and try a known-listed game
- Check Vulkan first. Confirm that the phone supports Vulkan and is receiving security updates. WPR’s published material does not provide a reliable compatibility matrix for Android versions, chipsets, GPU drivers, or phone models.
- Get the APK from the upstream release page. Open github.com/8212369/WPR/releases and select the Android build listed there. Avoid APK mirrors and “all games included” downloads.
- Allow installation from your chosen source. Android’s unknown-app installation permission is granted per source, such as a browser or file manager. Menu names and paths vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Install the APK. Review the requested permissions and proceed only if you trust the package’s origin.
- Prepare a compatible game file. Use a decrypted WP7/8 XNA XAP, not a Silverlight app, native app, or Windows 10 Mobile APPX.
- Open WPR and select or import the XAP. The public materials do not establish stable, universal button labels, so follow the interface shown by your particular build.
- Start with a game on the published list. Try a title such as Skulls of the Shogun, Ilomilo, Zuma’s Revenge, or The Sims 3 before drawing conclusions from an unlisted game.
Launching one title successfully does not prove that another will work, or that saves and online features will behave as they did on original hardware.
Common problems and what to check
The APK installs, but the game will not launch
- Confirm that the file is a WP7/8 XNA XAP, rather than a Silverlight, native ARM, APPX, or other package.
- Check that the XAP is decrypted, complete, and uncorrupted.
- Try one known-listed game to distinguish a title-specific issue from a general setup problem.
- Confirm that Vulkan is available and functioning on the phone.
- Note exactly what happens: an immediate crash, black screen, graphics corruption, or a failure only after a match may point to different game or device issues.
Community reports describe problems on some newer Android versions and with particular games, but they are anecdotal, not an official device compatibility statement (community report; community report).

The graphics are distorted
The upstream release notes say Vulkan is officially supported on Android and that OpenGL graphics distortion was unresolved. If the build offers a renderer choice, prefer Vulkan. Changing renderers is not a guaranteed fix for a particular phone, driver, or game.
The image is too small, stretched, or surrounded by borders
The project documentation says resolution scaling was not implemented and describes rendering around 480×800. On a modern high-resolution screen, that can mean black borders, stretching, a small centered image, an incorrect aspect ratio, or awkward touch targets. There may be no dependable in-app fix in the upstream build. A phone’s own display settings might help, but results vary; a community fork should be evaluated for provenance and release notes rather than assumed to be safer or better.
Is WPR worth trying?

Its appeal is preservation: some games that disappeared from current mobile stores can be explored on Android, and the open-source project publishes a compatibility list. The trade-off is substantial setup and uncertainty. Do not buy an expensive phone solely for WPR when no certified device list or guaranteed game compatibility is published.

Alternatives for playing or preserving a game
Original Windows Phone hardware
A working Lumia or other original device is the better fit if you want the original interface, display behavior, touch controls, and platform environment. These devices are obsolete, batteries may be degraded, and Store or account services can be unreliable or discontinued.
An official Android or iOS version
Where the same game has an official current mobile port, that version is usually simpler to install and more likely to scale and work with modern controls. It may differ from the Windows Phone release, and some ports are no longer sold, so compare the exact version you want rather than assuming it is identical.
WPR’s Windows build
The project also publishes a Windows build, which is relevant if you want to try the runner on a PC rather than Android. Its documentation identifies desktop and Android dependencies including FNA3D, FAudio, and libtheorafile; this is still WPR, not a consumer-facing recreation of Windows Phone (project documentation).

Microsoft’s development emulator
The official Windows Phone development emulator is a separate Windows-PC tool intended for software development and testing, not an Android gaming solution. It should not be confused with WPR or treated as a convenient replacement for an old phone.
Download safety
Because WPR’s Android build is outside Google Play, verify that the page is the intended WPR GitHub release page before downloading. Avoid repacked APKs, APK-hosting mirrors, and game bundles. Scan the downloaded file, review Android’s permission prompts, and do not install it if its origin or integrity is unclear. The APK and commercial game files are separate: an open-source runner does not make copyrighted game packages free to redistribute.
