The catch is that entering Northrend does not automatically allow ordinary flight there. A character must learn the regional Cold Weather Flying skill, normally at level 77 with Expert Riding (or a druid’s Flight Form). A limited loaner mount can provide restricted flying from level 77, while eligible alts can learn Cold Weather Flying at level 68 with a tome.
What “flying mounts” means in Wrath Classic
Wrath Classic separates owning or using a mount from knowing the riding skill that allows flight in a particular region. Northrend has flying mounts, but a character arriving by boat, zeppelin or portal initially uses mounts on the ground. Flight becomes available after learning Cold Weather Flying.

This is a Northrend-specific rule documented for Wrath of the Lich King Classic. It should not be treated as a universal requirement for every modern version of World of Warcraft, where expansion systems and level structures can differ.

Blizzard’s official guide states: “To learn Cold Weather Flying, you must be level 77 and know Expert Riding or Flight Form (Druids).” The guide is Wrath of the Lich King Classic: Flying in Northrend, published August 3, 2022.

Character requirements
- Level 77: This is the standard character level at which Cold Weather Flying can be learned.
- Expert Riding: Non-druids must already know Expert Riding. The Blizzard guide identifies this as the required riding qualification but does not state a purchase price in the cited material.
- Flight Form for druids: Druids can meet the riding prerequisite with Flight Form instead of learning Expert Riding in the same way as other classes.
Cold Weather Flying is a skill unlock for flying in Northrend. Blizzard’s instructions do not say that every character must obtain a separate, special Northrend mount. Once the regional skill is learned, the character can use an eligible flying mount already in the collection, subject to the mount’s own requirements.
Where to train
Three trainers teach the standard skill. They are spread across major Northrend travel areas, so you can use whichever location is most convenient:
- Hira Snowdawn: Roams around Krasus’ Landing in Dalaran.
- Roxi Ramrocket: Located at K3 in Storm Peaks.
- Pilot Vic: Located at River’s Heart in Sholazar Basin.
Because Hira Snowdawn moves around Krasus’ Landing, she may not stand in one fixed spot. If you do not see her immediately, search the landing area rather than assuming the trainer is unavailable.

How to unlock flying, step by step
- Reach level 77. The normal Cold Weather Flying unlock is not available to a first character below this level.
- Confirm your riding prerequisite. Make sure your character knows Expert Riding, or, if you are a druid, has Flight Form.
- Travel to a Northrend trainer. Visit Hira Snowdawn at Krasus’ Landing in Dalaran, Roxi Ramrocket at K3 in Storm Peaks, or Pilot Vic at River’s Heart in Sholazar Basin.
- Learn Cold Weather Flying. Select the training option in the trainer’s dialogue and complete the purchase. The cited Blizzard guide does not publish the training fee, so the amount can vary with the game’s current economy or implementation.
- Choose a flying mount. After training, summon an eligible flying mount from your collection and test it in Northrend. You do not need to replace every existing mount with a newly purchased Northrend model.
If the trainer does not offer the skill, check the level and riding conditions first. A character below 77, or a non-druid without Expert Riding, does not meet the normal requirements.
Lower-level flying for alts: the Tome of Cold Weather Flight
Wrath Classic provides an account-progression shortcut for additional characters. First, one character must reach level 80 and learn Cold Weather Flying. After that, Hira Snowdawn offers the Tome of Cold Weather Flight.
The tome allows an eligible alt to learn Cold Weather Flying at level 68 instead of waiting until level 77. Each alt needs its own tome to learn the skill. The level-80 requirement applies to the first character that unlocks access to the tome; it is not a replacement for the level-68 requirement on the alt using it.

First character versus alt
| Situation | Earliest level stated by Blizzard | What is required |
|---|---|---|
| First character using the normal unlock | 77 | Expert Riding, or Flight Form for a druid, then Cold Weather Flying training |
| Alt using the Tome of Cold Weather Flight | 68 | A level-80 character must already have learned Cold Weather Flying; each alt needs a tome |
| Temporary loaner option | 77 | Obtain the loaner from Honest Max; flight is restricted by zone and speed |
The tome is therefore a convenience for a developed roster, not a way for a brand-new account to bypass the initial progression. If no character on the account has reached level 80 and learned Cold Weather Flying, the standard level-77 route remains the applicable path.

Characters at level 77 or higher can use a limited workaround before buying or learning the normal regional skill. At K3 in Storm Peaks, Honest Max offers a loaner flying mount.
This mount is deliberately restricted:
- It flies at 60% speed.
- It works only in Storm Peaks, Sholazar Basin and Icecrown.
- It does not function as a full Northrend-wide Cold Weather Flying unlock.
That restriction matters because Northrend’s other zones will still require the normal skill for ordinary flight. The loaner is useful for reaching objectives in the three listed areas, particularly when a character has just reached level 77, but it should not be mistaken for permanent access to every Northrend airspace.

When the loaner makes sense
- Use it when you are level 77 or above and need immediate access to objectives in one of its three supported zones.
- Do not rely on it as an account-wide unlock; it is a temporary, zone-limited option.
- If flight fails after leaving Storm Peaks, Sholazar Basin or Icecrown, the behavior is consistent with the mount’s documented limitation rather than evidence that flying mounts are absent.
Cold Weather Flying and the mount itself are different things
Many “can I fly?” problems come from combining two separate checks. The character needs the appropriate riding qualification and Northrend’s Cold Weather Flying skill; the summoned mount must also be a flying mount that the character can use. The regional skill does not automatically grant a new mount, and owning a flying mount does not by itself unlock Northrend flight.
| Question | What the Wrath Classic rules establish |
|---|---|
| Do flying mounts exist? | Yes. Wrath Classic includes flying mounts and Northrend flight. |
| Can a newly arrived character fly immediately? | No. Northrend flight is initially unavailable until the character meets the Cold Weather Flying requirements or uses the restricted loaner. |
| Must every character buy a special Northrend mount? | No. Blizzard documents a regional skill unlock and does not require a separate mount for ordinary flight. |
| Does the loaner equal the normal unlock? | No. Its 60% speed and three-zone limit make it a workaround rather than full access. |
Historical mount included with an optional upgrade
Blizzard’s 2022 description of the Northrend Epic Upgrade listed the Kalu’ak Whalebone Glider, a flying mount for Wrath of the Lich King Classic characters. This confirms that an optional product package included a flying mount at that time.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat historical listing does not establish that the upgrade is still sold, and it does not make the glider necessary for ordinary Northrend flight. The relevant current gameplay requirement remains the Cold Weather Flying skill, not ownership of that particular promotional mount. Blizzard’s historical announcement is Get A Northrend Upgrade Before Your Journey to Icecrown.

Troubleshooting: why your mount will not fly
You are below level 77
The normal unlock is level-gated. If you have not reached 77, train the skill through the standard route is not yet available. A level-68 alt can qualify only through the Tome of Cold Weather Flight after the account’s level-80 prerequisite has been met.
You do not know Expert Riding
For a non-druid, Cold Weather Flying requires Expert Riding. Learning another riding rank or simply owning a flying mount does not substitute for that prerequisite. Druids can use Flight Form as the documented alternative.
You are looking in the wrong place
Hira Snowdawn is in Krasus’ Landing, Roxi Ramrocket is at K3, and Pilot Vic is at River’s Heart. These are distinct locations in Northrend. If Dalaran’s trainer is not visible, remember that Hira roams the landing area.
You are outside the loaner’s zones
Honest Max’s mount is limited to Storm Peaks, Sholazar Basin and Icecrown and flies at 60%. It will not provide unrestricted flight across Northrend. Learn Cold Weather Flying for the normal regional access.
You expect the skill to create a mount
Cold Weather Flying is the permission to fly in Northrend, not an automatic mount grant. Check your mount collection for an eligible flying mount after training.
A practical progression plan
- Level your first Northrend character toward 77 while using ground travel where necessary.
- Before visiting a trainer, verify Expert Riding or Flight Form.
- At 77, train Cold Weather Flying from the most convenient of the three named trainers.
- If you need access to a supported zone immediately at 77, use Honest Max’s loaner while arranging the full unlock.
- After one character reaches 80 and knows Cold Weather Flying, obtain a Tome of Cold Weather Flight from Hira Snowdawn for each alt you want to unlock at level 68.
In short, Wrath Classic absolutely has flying mounts. Northrend flight is controlled by a regional training requirement: level 77 plus Expert Riding or Flight Form for the standard route, level 68 with the alt tome after the account prerequisite, or a 60%-speed loaner restricted to three zones.
