It is the reprised raid available in the Destiny 2 ecosystem, with a documented modern reward structure and a consistent vocabulary of Chalice, Oversoul and sword mechanics. Wrath of the Machine is not a Destiny 2 raid: it belongs to Destiny 1 and the Rise of Iron expansion. It remains an excellent historical choice if you specifically want SIVA, the Devil Splicers and the original Rise of Iron experience, but it is not a like-for-like alternative for a new Destiny 2 player.
There is no Bungie-published completion-time table, failure-rate study or official beginner ranking for these raids. The recommendation below is therefore a practical editorial judgment based on platform access, documented systems and how much repeated mechanic language each raid gives a first-time team.

The short answer
Crota’s End is the better first raid for a new Destiny player who wants to learn in Destiny 2. Bungie’s 2023 Showcase material calls it a “reprised” raid for Destiny 2, and its launch coverage documents a current-style Contest Mode, encounter-specific armor structure, Challenge Mode rewards and a Necrochasm quest path.
Wrath of the Machine is a Destiny 1 raid from Rise of Iron. Bungie’s Destiny 1 support material lists it with the continuing Destiny 1 raid activities. You need access to Destiny 1 and Rise of Iron to play it; owning or playing Destiny 2 alone does not provide access.
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
If your priority is a current Destiny 2 learning path, start with Crota’s End. If your priority is SIVA lore, the Rise of Iron setting or experiencing a legacy raid in its original game, Wrath is the right choice despite the extra platform requirement.

The platform distinction changes the comparison
Crota’s End is the Destiny 2 option
Bungie’s 2023 Showcase recap introduced Crota’s End as a reprised raid for Destiny 2. “Reprised” means the original raid concept and encounters were brought into the current game, with Destiny 2 systems, power rules, loot and challenge infrastructure around them. A player already building a Destiny 2 character can therefore pursue Crota’s End without changing games.
Wrath of the Machine is a Destiny 1/Rise of Iron activity
Wrath launched with Rise of Iron in Destiny 1. Bungie’s Destiny 1 documentation places it among Destiny 1 raids, not among Destiny 2 activities. There is no Destiny 2 version of Wrath of the Machine in this comparison. To play it, you need a compatible Destiny 1 setup and Rise of Iron access for the relevant platform and region.
A physical Rise of Iron edition can be useful for someone deliberately choosing Wrath, but a listing is not proof that the included code, disc or license will work for your hardware. Check the platform, region, seller and whether the copy is new or used before buying. The edition and access requirements are more important than the box art or advertised price.
Why this matters to a first-time raider
Raid learning is already demanding: six people must coordinate movement, damage, survivability and communication while adapting to unfamiliar rules. Adding a second game, a different character build environment and a legacy access check creates friction before the first encounter starts. Crota removes that particular barrier for a Destiny 2 newcomer.
What Crota’s End teaches a new team
Crota’s End has a strong through-line. The raid repeatedly asks players to understand who carries a shared resource, when that resource can be transferred, how the team reaches the next checkpoint and when a sword or other damage tool is safe to use. A first-time group still has to execute, but the vocabulary is more coherent than a sequence of unrelated minigames.
Abyss: moving together while managing the raid’s resource language
The opening section introduces the raid’s movement and survival pressure while the team learns to communicate about the central progression system. New players are not merely shooting enemies; they are watching a shared state, deciding who takes responsibility and moving before the environment punishes hesitation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat combination is useful for teaching raid habits. Players learn to call out a handoff, protect the person performing it, and keep the group’s route synchronized instead of wandering toward individual objectives. The exact execution still depends on the fireteam’s current version and strategy, so new groups should agree on assignments before launching rather than assuming every guide uses identical roles.
Oversoul Throne Bridge: repeated handoffs and sword confidence
The bridge section reinforces the idea that one player’s temporary advantage is a team resource. Sword use is not simply a damage button: the team has to create a safe opportunity, transfer responsibility and keep the crossing orderly. That repetition helps a learner recognize a raid pattern—build a state, hand it to the next player, then regroup for the next state—rather than treating every wipe as an unrelated mistake.

Ir Yut: coordinating a timed damage window
Ir Yut tests whether the team can complete preparation tasks without losing track of the damage phase. New raiders practice assigning jobs, identifying the moment when the encounter changes state and entering damage together. The encounter rewards calm callouts: a team that says what is ready and what is missing is more reliable than one in which six people improvise at once.
Crota, Son of Oryx: combining the raid’s vocabulary
The final encounter asks the team to apply the concepts it has seen earlier—resource control, sword timing, positioning and synchronized damage—under greater pressure. That makes Crota’s End a useful first raid even when the final fight is not easy. You can point to a specific lesson after a wipe: the sword was early, the handoff was late, a player lost track of the shared state or the damage team was not ready.

Power and launch conditions
Bungie’s Crota’s End launch article for August 31, 2023 stated that players needed to be at 1790 Power to be at the cap for all encounters during that launch period. The same article said Contest Mode was enabled for 48 hours. Those figures describe the 2023 launch event, not a permanent promise that every future Crota’s End configuration will use the same requirement.
Contest Mode also unlocked Challenge Mode and the Superior Swordplay Triumph for teams that cleared the launch conditions. A new player does not need to treat that 48-hour window as a normal learning target; it was a special launch rule with a fixed time limit.
Rewards and the Necrochasm path
Bungie’s later update identifies four encounter names in the armor loot structure: Abyss, Oversoul Throne Bridge, Ir Yut and Crota, Son of Oryx. That gives a player a clear reason to learn individual encounters rather than viewing the raid as one undifferentiated activity.
Crota’s End also has a Necrochasm reward path. Bungie says players who completed Contest Mode could receive the Bottomless Pit quest, while Essence of the Oversoul comes from encounters and Triumphs. The result is a documented progression loop: learn encounters, earn raid drops and work toward a distinctive weapon instead of relying only on a single completion reward.
What Wrath of the Machine teaches a new team
Wrath is mechanically rich, but its lessons are more varied. The cited Bungie mechanics coverage describes SIVA and the Devil Splicers as the raid’s foundation, with several distinct jobs that must be performed in sequence.
Voltage and spinners: tracking a shared objective
Players collect voltage and use it to power spinners. This teaches the same broad raid discipline as Crota’s shared-resource sections—watch the team state, communicate who is carrying progress and avoid wasting a cycle—but the objects and timing are different. A new player must learn both the physical route and the correct moment to deposit or transfer progress.
SIVA charges: handling a throwable objective
Wrath asks players to throw SIVA charges as part of its encounter logic. Throwables add a layer that ordinary weapon damage does not: the team must identify the correct target, pick up the charge, communicate readiness and avoid losing the opportunity while enemies or hazards are active.

Elemental cannons and Servitors: matching tools to targets
Another mechanic pairs elemental cannons with Servitors. The team must recognize which weapon belongs to which target and make sure the right player is ready at the right time. This is a classic raid lesson—equipment is an assignment, not merely a personal loadout—but it can produce more callout pressure than Crota’s repeated Chalice-and-sword vocabulary.
The moving Siege Engine: movement under pressure
The Siege Engine encounter requires players to survive a moving platform sequence while completing tasks around it. Movement, add control and objective work happen together, so a player who focuses only on shooting can miss a required interaction or fall behind the group. It is an effective test of spatial awareness, but it is less forgiving of a team that has not agreed on who handles each task.
Aksis: Empowered timing and fast communication
At Aksis, Empowered players must identify and stun the boss at the correct moments. The mechanic rewards fast recognition and precise callouts: the team needs to know who is Empowered, where the stun is required and when damage can begin. That timing can feel demanding for a first raid because the responsibility rotates and a missed callout can affect the whole fireteam.
These mechanics do not make Wrath objectively “harder” by an official measurement—Bungie does not publish a beginner difficulty score for either raid. They do mean that a new group is learning more distinct interaction types: resource collection, throwing, elemental matching, moving-platform execution and Empowered timing.
Which raid has the better teaching pattern?
| Teaching need | More favorable choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Learn one recurring mechanic language | Crota’s End | Chalice/Oversoul progression and sword responsibilities recur across the raid. |
| Practice switching between very different jobs | Wrath of the Machine | Voltage, SIVA charges, elemental cannons, movement and Empowered stuns exercise different skills. |
| Stay inside the Destiny 2 ecosystem | Crota’s End | It is the reprised Destiny 2 activity. |
| Experience SIVA and Rise of Iron history | Wrath of the Machine | Those themes and rewards belong to the original Destiny 1 expansion. |
| Reduce setup friction for a new group | Crota’s End | No Destiny 1/Rise of Iron access check is needed for the comparison’s recommended path. |
Calling Crota “easier” should be understood as a learning-path judgment, not a measured ranking. A team with experienced Destiny 1 players may find Wrath comfortable, while a team that already knows SIVA mechanics may prefer its variety. For a genuinely new Destiny player, fewer platform changes and more repeated terminology usually make the first teaching cycle clearer.

Six-player organization: what both raids require
Both activities are six-player raids. That means a new player should plan for a full fireteam rather than assuming matchmaking will assemble a group for every encounter. Bungie describes raids as “the most emblematic endgame activity in Destiny 2,” and the format depends on communication rather than private progression.
Assign jobs before the encounter starts
- Choose a caller who explains the mechanic in one or two sentences.
- Give each player a primary location or responsibility, plus a backup person for any task that can rotate.
- Define the damage signal: a spoken phrase, a visible state or both.
- Agree on what happens after a mistake so the team resets instead of improvising six different recoveries.
Use Guided Games or a prepared group when available
Bungie’s Guided Games documentation describes a way for solo players to connect with guiding clans for selected endgame activities. Availability and activity coverage can change, so treat it as a route to find a teaching group, not a guarantee of an immediate raid lobby. A prepared six-person team, a clan willing to teach and a clearly labeled learning group remain useful alternatives.
What a new player should bring
- A survivable build for the current game version rather than a loadout chosen only for damage screenshots.
- At least one reliable weapon option for ordinary enemies and one for the encounter’s damage phase.
- Enough flexibility to equip the raid-specific tool when the encounter demands a sword, cannon or other interaction.
- A microphone or another dependable way to hear and deliver short callouts.
- Patience for explanation and wipes; a first clear is a learning session, not a speedrun.
Rewards, motivation and long-term value
Why Crota’s End is the practical Destiny 2 project
Crota’s End offers documented Destiny 2 armor tied to the four encounters, launch-era Challenge Mode rewards and a Necrochasm progression route involving the Bottomless Pit quest and Essence of the Oversoul. These systems give a new player several reasons to return: practice a specific encounter, complete a Triumph, improve a drop or advance the weapon path.
Why Wrath remains worth playing
Wrath’s value is historical and experiential. Its loot belongs to Destiny 1 and Rise of Iron, while its identity comes from SIVA, the Devil Splicers and the original raid’s role in that expansion. A player who wants to understand that period of Destiny, revisit a favorite campaign era or experience its distinctive mechanics may reasonably choose Wrath even though it is not the current Destiny 2 route.

Decision guide for common new-player situations
“I have only played Destiny 2.”
Choose Crota’s End. You avoid buying or locating a separate Destiny 1/Rise of Iron setup and learn raid communication in the game you already understand.
“My group wants the most recognizable SIVA raid.”
Choose Wrath of the Machine, provided every player has Destiny 1 and Rise of Iron access. Set expectations that the group is learning a legacy raid, not entering a Destiny 2 activity.
“We have never raided, but several players are comfortable with Destiny combat.”
Start with Crota’s End and schedule a teaching session rather than a one-night clear attempt. Its repeated mechanic language makes it easier to explain why a wipe happened and what assignment changes on the next pull.
“We are experienced raiders in other games and want mechanical variety.”
Wrath may be the more interesting first Destiny raid for your group if the platform requirements are already solved. Its voltage, throwable, elemental, movement and Empowered tasks demand more frequent role changes.
“I want the current Destiny 2 reward chase.”
Choose Crota’s End. The documented armor structure, Challenge Mode history and Necrochasm path are part of its Destiny 2 presentation; Wrath’s cited rewards are original Rise of Iron/Destiny 1 loot.
A practical first-clear plan
Plan for Crota’s End
- Confirm that all six players are entering the Destiny 2 version of Crota’s End, not searching for a similarly named legacy activity.
- Read the encounter names in order—Abyss, Oversoul Throne Bridge, Ir Yut and Crota, Son of Oryx—so everyone knows the progression.
- Explain the Chalice/Oversoul and sword vocabulary before the first pull, including who performs each handoff.
- Run a short practice attempt focused on movement and communication rather than damage optimization.
- After each wipe, identify one failed state: a missed handoff, an early sword, an unready damage team or a lost position.
- Once the group can complete the mechanics consistently, optimize loadouts and pursue encounter rewards, Triumphs and the Necrochasm path.
Plan for Wrath of the Machine
- Verify Destiny 1 and Rise of Iron access for every player, including platform and region compatibility.
- Assign one person to explain voltage, SIVA charges, elemental cannon matching, Siege Engine movement and Empowered stuns before each relevant encounter.
- Give every rotating job a named primary and backup; do not rely on “someone grab it” callouts.
- Practice the interaction first, then add damage optimization. A perfect damage build cannot rescue a missed stun or an unpowered spinner.
- Use short, consistent callouts for target, location and state. Long explanations during an active phase create more confusion than they solve.
- Treat the raid as a historical Destiny 1 session. Rewards, progression and controls may not match what players expect from Destiny 2.
Final recommendation
For a new player asking which raid to do first, pick Crota’s End. It is the Destiny 2 activity in this comparison, it has a coherent recurring mechanic language and its documented armor, challenge and Necrochasm systems provide a clear reason to keep learning.
Pick Wrath of the Machine when the goal is specifically SIVA, Rise of Iron or a legacy Destiny 1 raid. It is a strong historical choice, but its platform requirement and broader mix of mechanic types make it a less direct first step for someone whose actual goal is learning Destiny 2 raiding.
