Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →wsburn.dll is a third-party application DLL, not a standard Windows component. When Windows reports that wsburn.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to identify the application that launched the error and repair or reinstall that application.
The name is commonly associated with an older disc-burning component and is probably related to software built with the StarBurn SDK, although the exact original product cannot be confirmed from a current authoritative file manifest. Do not download a replacement DLL into System32. Rebuild the complete application installation instead.

If the file appears unexpectedly in %AppData%, %Temp%, or an unfamiliar ProgramData folder, treat it as suspicious. Malware samples have also used the filename WsBurn.dll, so restoring an unknown copy can make the problem worse.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 1: Identify the application behind the error
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The application named in the error is usually the owner of the missing file. It may be a disc-burning program, backup utility, media application, game, or another older program that bundled burning functionality.

- Write down the exact error message.
- Note what you started immediately before it appeared.
- If the message appeared during Windows startup, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select the Startup apps tab.
- Look for recently installed, updated, or unfamiliar applications.
- Right-click a likely entry and choose Open file location.
- Inspect the folder for the application’s main
.exefile and related DLLs.
Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. Sort by installation date if the problem began after a recent software change.
If you know the program, do not continue by searching for wsburn.dll independently. Search the program’s own installation folder, launcher, support page, or installer instead.
Fix 2: Check whether the DLL is beside the application
Time needed: 5 minutes
Application DLLs normally sit beside the executable that loads them or inside a subfolder managed by that application. They do not normally need to be copied into a Windows system directory.
If a copy of wsburn.dll already exists:
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the General tab and record its full location.
- Open the Details tab if available.
- Check the internal name, product information, and version fields, understanding that different files using the same name may not have identical metadata.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it exists.
- Compare the file’s location with the application that produced the error.
A file beside the application’s executable is more plausible than one in a random user-writable directory. A file in %Temp%, %AppData%, or an unfamiliar ProgramData subfolder deserves additional security checking before you run it.
The commonly indexed file is reported as a 32-bit PE32 DLL, but those reports are not a universal specification. Another file with the same name may have different version information. Match the DLL to the application and its installer rather than selecting a file based only on its filename or reported size.
Fix 3: Repair or verify the parent application
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
Repair is the preferred fix when the program offers it because it can restore the missing DLL without replacing unrelated settings.
Use Windows app repair
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not exist or does not help, return to the application’s entry and use Reset only after confirming that you have saved any application-specific settings. Reset can remove local configuration or cached data.
Use a launcher’s repair function
For a game or launcher-managed program:
- Open the launcher.
- Open its library or installed-program list.
- Select the affected program.
- Open its management menu.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Start the program from the launcher.
The successful result is that the application starts without the wsburn.dll message and that the installer restores its related files as a group.
Fix 4: Reinstall the application from its official source
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
If repair cannot restore the file, uninstall and reinstall the application using its original vendor, publisher, or launcher.
- Back up the application’s documents, profiles, saved projects, or game saves.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or obtain the installer from the application’s official publisher or the launcher that originally supplied it.
- Install the program using an administrator account.
- Start it before copying back custom settings.
If the program is an older disc-burning application, install the matching application version rather than a standalone wsburn.dll. Older software may depend on a complete group of files, including a particular 32-bit DLL and other supporting modules.
If reinstalling immediately removes the DLL again, stop reinstalling it repeatedly. Check Microsoft Defender’s protection history and investigate whether another process is quarantining the file.

Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A legitimate application DLL can disappear after an antivirus detection, but a quarantine event can also be the correct response to a malicious file using a familiar name.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand any entry referring to
wsburn.dllor the affected application. - Note the detected file path and threat name.
- Do not choose Allow on device or Restore merely because the application needs the file.
Restore a file only if all of these checks support it:
- The file is in the application’s original installation directory.
- You obtained the application from its legitimate publisher or launcher.
- The file matches the application’s expected architecture.
- The detection has been independently reviewed and is a false positive.
- A clean reinstall produces the same file in the same location.
If the file was found in %Temp%, %AppData%, or a random ProgramData folder, leave it quarantined and run a scan. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, then run a Full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline scan if suspicious behavior continues after a restart.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and dependency compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A 32-bit application normally needs its 32-bit dependencies, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. The commonly indexed wsburn.dll sample is reported as 32-bit, but do not assume every file with this name has the same build.

- Identify whether the affected application is a 32-bit program from its installer, documentation, or installation folder.
- Reinstall the matching application build.
- Do not mix a DLL from another release into the program folder.
The message “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that wsburn.dll exists but one of its dependent DLLs is missing. In that case, replacing wsburn.dll alone will not solve the problem. Reinstall the parent program and its documented prerequisites.
Only install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable when the application installer or a dependency diagnostic identifies a missing runtime. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally needs the Microsoft x86 package. Older applications may require an older runtime generation, and installing the newest package is not guaranteed to satisfy every legacy dependency. Do not remove existing Visual C++ packages unless you know which application installed them.
Fix 7: Update the application and, if relevant, its drivers
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Check the application publisher or launcher for an update. An update may replace an incomplete installation and provide a compatible set of application DLLs.
Recommended Free Tools
If the program controls a physical optical drive:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Right-click the affected drive and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also expand Storage controllers and check for warning icons, but do not remove devices or drivers without a clear reason. The wsburn.dll error itself does not prove that a hardware driver is defective.
When checking drivers manually, hunting through several hardware manufacturers and guessing which package is stale can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional because reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
wsburn.dll is not documented as a Windows system file, so DISM and SFC will not normally recreate it. Use these commands when Windows has broader corruption, Windows features are failing, or several unrelated system components are damaged.
- Install pending updates in Settings > Windows Update.
- Restart Windows.
- Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when SFC completes.
- Retry the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. If both commands complete successfully but the application still reports wsburn.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall steps.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that identifies issues it finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional because an application-specific reinstall remains the correct fix for wsburn.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a default fix
Time needed: none
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for installing or repairing a missing application DLL.
Do not run:
regsvr32 wsburn.dll
There is no verified evidence that wsburn.dll is an ActiveX or COM server that requires registration. Running the command may produce another error without restoring the application. Use registration only if the original application vendor specifically documents that requirement.
Causes and the matching repair
| Likely cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete install, update, or uninstall | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| Defender quarantine | Review Protection history and verify the file before any restore |
| Wrong application architecture | Install the matching application build and dependency set |
| Missing dependent DLL | Reinstall the application and its documented prerequisites |
| Windows component corruption | Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC when broader symptoms exist |
| Malware or DLL hijacking | Quarantine the suspicious file and run Defender scans |
| Damaged user profile or permissions | Test another Windows account and check folder access |
When the problem affects only one user
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If the application works for another Windows account, the installation may be healthy and the original profile may have damaged settings or permissions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Create or use a separate local Windows account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Start the application.
- If it works, compare the original profile’s application settings and permissions.
- Reinstall the application for the affected user if its installer supports per-user installation.
- Avoid copying DLLs between profiles.
If the program fails for every account, focus on the installation, Defender detections, dependencies, or the application’s compatibility with the current Windows release.
FAQ
Is wsburn.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or Windows driver. Treat it as an application-specific DLL.
Is it part of StarBurn?
A StarBurn SDK connection is probable because StarBurn documents redistributable burning components and 32-bit and 64-bit builds. The current public documentation does not explicitly verify WsBurn.dll by name, so the parent application must still be identified.
Should I download wsburn.dll from a DLL website?
No. An isolated download may contain the wrong version or architecture, may be malicious, and may leave dependent files missing. Use the original application installer, launcher repair function, or official publisher instead.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Third-party application DLLs normally belong with the application that loads them. Copying one into System32 can create search-order conflicts and complicate later repairs.
Why does the error say the module could not be found when the file exists?
The message may refer to a dependency of wsburn.dll, not the file itself. Repairing or reinstalling the parent application is the safest way to restore the complete dependency set.
What if every reinstall removes the file again?
Check Defender Protection history, run a full or offline scan, inspect startup entries and scheduled tasks, and verify the installer source. Do not keep downloading replacement DLLs.
