wsearchmigplugin.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by Windows Search migration and upgrade processes. If Windows reports that wsearchmigplugin.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows itself rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The filename refers to the Microsoft Windows Search Migration Plugin. Windows uses migration components when an installation is upgraded, repaired, or moved to another Windows release. This plugin helps preserve or process Windows Search-related state during that work.

The path can differ between Windows builds. Do not treat the root of C:WindowsSystem32 as the only valid location, and do not assume that SysWOW64 is the correct destination.
Historical Microsoft file tables contain both 32-bit and 64-bit examples. Different Windows releases and servicing levels also contain different file versions, so a version or file size found online is not a universal target for every computer.
Error symptoms and likely causes
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “wsearchmigplugin.dll is missing from your computer” | A protected Windows component is missing, quarantined, or damaged | Install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because wsearchmigplugin.dll was not found” | Windows or an installer cannot locate the migration component | Identify the path and repair Windows servicing |
| “Error loading wsearchmigplugin.dll” | The DLL or one of its dependencies may be unavailable | Run DISM and SFC; inspect setup logs |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” | The file may be corrupt or from the wrong Windows build or architecture | Do not replace it manually; use matching Windows repair media |
| The error appears during an upgrade | Migration infrastructure failed during setup | Repair Windows, then review Panther setup logs |
| The file disappeared after security cleanup | Antivirus may have quarantined it, or cleanup may have removed a damaged copy | Verify the path and Microsoft signature before restoring |
| The problem began after an update or cleanup tool | A recent system change may have damaged or removed a component | Try System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists |
The filename alone cannot prove which event caused the problem. A “module not found” message can also mean that a dependency required by the migration process is unavailable.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart
A pending cumulative update or incomplete servicing operation can leave migration files inconsistent.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows asks you to.
- If the error occurred during an upgrade, retry the upgrade after the restart.
On Windows 10, the labels may appear under Update & Security and Windows Update rather than directly under Windows Update settings.
If Windows Update fails repeatedly, do not keep copying DLLs into system folders. Continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair the Windows component store and protected files
This is the most important repair for a missing or damaged wsearchmigplugin.dll.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Terminal. - Right-click Windows Terminal and select Run as administrator. On older systems, use Command Prompt instead.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source SFC uses when replacing protected files. A successful operation reports that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows afterward.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The result usually falls into one of these categories:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and retry the operation that produced the error.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, inspect
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logor use matching installation media as a repair source. - Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart and run the command from an elevated console again.
The supported Microsoft sequence is DISM followed by SFC, not random DLL replacement.

If you want to reduce the manual work of repeatedly checking repair output and identifying what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues; its free scan shows findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and DISM/SFC or a Windows repair reinstall remain the authoritative fixes for this protected component.
Fix 3: Repair a failed Windows upgrade
If the message appears during setup, the migration host may be unable to load the plugin or one of its dependencies.
First, disconnect unnecessary USB devices, external drives, and other peripherals. Temporarily pause third-party antivirus only through that product’s documented controls, and re-enable it after the upgrade attempt.
Then:
- Run the DISM and SFC commands above.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that the computer has enough free storage for the upgrade.
- Retry the upgrade using current Microsoft installation media.
- Choose the supported repair or in-place upgrade option that preserves your files and applications when it is offered.
- If setup fails again, open File Explorer and enter:
%windir%Panther
- Review
setupact.logandsetuperr.log. - Search those files for
WSearchMigPlugin.dll,MigHost, or error code0x7e.
A setup log showing LoadLibraryExW failure does not necessarily mean the DLL itself is absent. It can indicate that a dependency could not be loaded.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can quarantine a Windows file after detecting corruption or suspicious activity. A quarantine entry is not proof that the file was malware.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
WSearchMigPlugin.dll. - Expand the entry and record the full path.
- Restore it only if the path is a normal Windows migration path and the file is identified as a Microsoft-signed Windows component.
- Run a full scan after restoration.
If the file was found beside an unrelated game executable or in a user-writable temporary folder, do not restore it merely because the name is familiar. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan instead.
If malware is suspected, or if Windows repair continues to fail after a confirmed infection, use Windows recovery or reinstall Windows from trusted Microsoft installation media.
Fix 5: Verify the path and digital signature
Before taking any manual action, find out which file Windows is actually referring to.
- Press Windows + E.
- Paste each of these paths into the address bar, one at a time:
C:WindowsSystem32migration
C:WindowsSystem32migwizreplacementmanifestsWindowsSearchEngine
- Look for
WSearchMigPlugin.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
The expected directory and a valid Microsoft signature provide stronger evidence than the filename alone. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native files for the installed operating-system architecture, while SysWOW64 is associated with 32-bit compatibility components. Do not use those folder names to decide which file to download or copy.

If the error started immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change, System Restore may reverse the change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally affects system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs rather than personal documents. If no suitable restore point exists, return to DISM/SFC and consider a repair reinstall.
Fix 7: Check storage health if corruption keeps returning
Repeated SFC failures can indicate file-system or storage trouble, although one DLL error does not prove that the disk is failing.
Open an elevated Terminal and run:
chkdsk C: /scan
Review the result for file-system errors. Also check the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic utility, Event Viewer storage warnings, and available SMART information. Back up important files before performing deeper disk repairs.
Do not repeatedly replace the DLL while ignoring recurring disk errors. A repaired file can become damaged again if the underlying storage problem remains.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when logs point to a driver problem
A driver is not the normal owner of wsearchmigplugin.dll, and updating drivers will not usually restore this Windows migration component. Consider driver work only if Device Manager shows a warning or the upgrade logs identify a device-related failure.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If Windows recently received a problematic driver, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
If manually checking every device and manufacturer release is taking too long, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; its free scan reports findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing the Windows component itself.
Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
Some documented samples of WSearchMigPlugin.dll export DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer, and Windows migration logs show the migration host loading and registering the component in particular setup contexts. That does not make manual registration the normal repair.
regsvr32 registers a DLL that exposes the required registration entry point. It does not restore a missing file, repair the component store, replace dependencies, or select the correct Windows build.
If Microsoft support specifically instructs you to register an existing, verified copy, use the matching elevated command for that file’s location, for example:
regsvr32 "C:WindowsSystem32migrationWSearchMigPlugin.dll"
If registration reports that the module could not be found, that can refer to the DLL or a dependency. Return to DISM, SFC, and Windows repair rather than trying random copies.
Why downloading this DLL is unsafe
Do not download wsearchmigplugin.dll from a random DLL repository or copy it from another PC. That approach can introduce:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Malware disguised with a familiar filename
- The wrong Windows build or servicing level
- The wrong architecture
- A mismatched language or dependency set
- A file that is unsigned or altered
- A replacement that hides the real component-store or disk problem
The safe sources are Windows servicing, Windows Update, matching Microsoft installation media, and a verified security-product quarantine restore. If a repair source is required, Microsoft documents DISM source and limit-access options for using matching installation media.
FAQ
Is wsearchmigplugin.dll legitimate?
Yes, it is a genuine Microsoft Windows Search Migration Plugin when it is located in a normal Windows migration directory and has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
Is it a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file?
No. It is part of Windows migration and replacement-manifest infrastructure. Installing unrelated runtimes is not the normal fix.
Should it be in System32 or SysWOW64?
It is generally under a migration or migwizreplacementmanifests directory. The exact path depends on the Windows release. Do not move it between System32 and SysWOW64.
Can a missing file stop an application from starting?
The reported error may appear while launching a program, but the file belongs to Windows migration infrastructure. First determine whether the message is actually from an upgrade, installer, recovery process, or dependency rather than assuming an ordinary application owns it.
What should I give support?
Provide the Windows edition and build, the complete error text, the exact path named in the message, whether it occurs during boot or upgrade, and relevant setupact.log, setuperr.log, or CBS log entries.
What is the definitive fix if DISM and SFC fail?
Use matching Microsoft installation media as a DISM repair source or perform a supported repair reinstall. If malware or repeated disk corruption is involved, resolve that underlying problem before replacing system files.
