wship6.dll Missing: Restore the Windows IPv6 Component Safely

wship6.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a separate game runtime. It is the Winsock2 Helper DLL (TL/IPv6), also commonly identified as an IPv6 Helper DLL, and Windows uses it as part of its network socket and IPv6 provider architecture.

The safest fix is not to download wship6.dll from a DLL website. Install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt. If only one application reports the error, repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.

What is wship6.dll?

wship6.dll belongs to Microsoft Windows Operating System and is published by Microsoft Corporation. It participates in Winsock, the Windows networking interface used by applications that create network connections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft explains that Winsock can load transport-provider DLLs dynamically when an application creates sockets. wship6.dll is associated with the IPv6 transport side of that system. It is not the same thing as:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
  • DirectX
  • .NET
  • A game-specific runtime
  • A general-purpose application plugin

A program may mention wship6.dll while starting because it is initializing networking. That does not necessarily mean IPv6 itself is disabled or that the internet connection is broken.

File identity and expected locations

Item Expected information
Filename wship6.dll
Windows role Winsock IPv6 transport helper
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Product Microsoft Windows Operating System
Native 64-bit location %windir%System32
32-bit location on 64-bit Windows %windir%SysWOW64
Universal version or size None; these vary by Windows release and servicing level

On a typical Windows installation, %windir% refers to the Windows folder, usually C:Windows. Do not assume that SysWOW64 contains 64-bit files. Windows uses that historically confusing name for the 32-bit system-file location on 64-bit installations.

You can check the folders without downloading anything:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Click the address bar.
  3. Enter %windir%System32.
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Search for wship6.dll.
  6. If Windows is 64-bit, also check %windir%SysWOW64.

A copy in an application folder is not automatically genuine. For any copy outside the normal Windows directories, check its Properties and Digital Signatures tab. The publisher should be Microsoft, and the file should be associated with the Windows installation rather than an unknown installer.

What the error messages mean

You may see one of several similar messages:

  • “The program can’t start because wship6.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “Application could not be started because wship6.dll is missing.”
  • “Error loading wship6.dll.”
  • “wship6.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “wship6.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These messages do not all identify the same failure.

Missing or not found

Windows, an application, or a loader cannot locate the required file. The file may genuinely be missing, or the program may be searching the wrong directory.

Could not be loaded

Windows found the named file but could not load it. The file may be damaged, incompatible with the process architecture, blocked by security software, or dependent on another missing component.

Specified module could not be found

This wording can be misleading. It may mean that a dependency needed by wship6.dll is missing, not that wship6.dll itself is absent.

Not designed to run on Windows or contains an error

This usually indicates corruption, an incorrect replacement, a mismatched architecture, or a problem in the Windows component store. It is not proof that the file should be replaced with a copy from another computer.

Before repairing the file

First determine whether the problem is Windows-wide or limited to one application.

If several programs fail

If multiple network applications, Windows tools, or startup components report the error, treat it as a Windows component problem. Start with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one program fails

If Windows works normally and one game or application reports wship6.dll, the application may have:

  • A damaged installation
  • An incorrect loader path
  • A missing dependency
  • A 32-bit or 64-bit compatibility problem
  • A security product blocking one of its files

Repair Windows first, then use the application’s repair or file-verification feature.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A failed or incomplete Windows servicing operation can leave protected files or the component store in an inconsistent state. Updating Windows is a safe first step.

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  7. Test the application again.

If Windows Update reports an error, continue with the repair commands below rather than trying to obtain the DLL separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired source. Run DISM first.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

Run this command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. The process can appear to pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window while it is working.

When DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and try the affected program again.

Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance documents this DISM-before-SFC order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running these commands manually is useful because the output shows whether Windows found corruption and whether it repaired anything. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by scanning for system problems and showing what it finds, while its repair functions are provided by the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair commands remain the appropriate first step.

Understand the SFC result

“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”

Windows protected files appear intact. If the application still fails, investigate the application’s installation, its dependencies, security software, and architecture.

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”

Restart Windows and test the program again. If the error returns, run Windows Update and consider whether the application or a third-party Winsock component is damaged.

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”

Run DISM again if necessary, restart, and repeat SFC. If SFC still cannot repair the file, continue with a matching repair source or Windows recovery procedure rather than copying a random DLL.

You can inspect the SFC details with:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"

This creates sfcdetails.txt on the desktop. It may contain many entries, so focus on lines mentioning wship6.dll or files that SFC could not repair.

Use a matching Windows repair source

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ^
 /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid source that matches the installed Windows edition, build, architecture, and servicing level. Do not use an arbitrary folder from another computer.

Run SFC again after DISM finishes:

sfc /scannow

Fix 3: Repair or verify the affected application

Use this fix when the error appears only with one game or program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a traditional Windows application

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Open its menu or select Advanced options, depending on the application.
  6. Choose Repair if available.
  7. Launch the application again.

If Repair does not help, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings or data. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall it from the publisher or official store.

For a game launcher

Use the launcher’s own Verify files, Verify integrity, or Repair function. That is safer than placing a DLL in the game’s directory because the launcher can restore the files belonging to that exact installation.

If verification reports another missing dependency, follow the game’s official installation guidance. Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore wship6.dll. No Microsoft redistributable package for this Windows DLL has been established.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit architecture

A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may use the copy under:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%windir%SysWOW64

A native 64-bit process normally uses:

%windir%System32

On 32-bit Windows, the normal system directory is %windir%System32.

To check the installed architecture:

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Find System type.

Do not copy the file from System32 to SysWOW64, or the reverse. The directories contain architecture-specific protected files, and manual copying can create a worse mismatch. DISM and SFC are designed to repair the relevant Windows file sets.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware

Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file, block access to it, or interfere with a third-party Winsock provider.

  1. Open your installed security application.
  2. Open Quarantine, Protection history, or its equivalent.
  3. Look for a detection involving wship6.dll.
  4. Confirm the file path and publisher before taking action.
  5. Update the security definitions.
  6. Run a full system scan.

Restore a quarantined file only when the security product identifies it as legitimate and the path belongs to the Windows installation. Do not disable protection merely to install a downloaded replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A file named wship6.dll outside the normal Windows folders, an unsigned file, or a file with an unexpected publisher deserves additional scrutiny. If malware is suspected, complete the scan before attempting manual repairs.

Fix 6: Investigate disk and servicing problems

Failed updates, file-system corruption, or component-store damage can cause a DLL to become unreadable or incompatible.

After DISM and SFC:

  1. Install all pending Windows updates.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Check whether other system files or applications are failing.
  4. Review the security product’s quarantine history.
  5. Check the drive for signs of errors using Windows’ built-in drive properties or the manufacturer’s diagnostic tools.

If Windows repeatedly reports corruption, the problem may be broader than one DLL. Back up important files before using recovery options.

Updating drivers and Winsock-related software

A network driver does not reinstall wship6.dll, so driver updating is not the primary fix for a missing Windows file. It becomes relevant when the DLL repair succeeds but networking remains broken, or when a third-party VPN, firewall, traffic filter, or network adapter component is involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check the network adapter:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the affected adapter.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows requests it.

You can also install a driver supplied by the computer or adapter manufacturer. Avoid removing networking components unless you know which program installed them.

Manually checking several adapter models and versions can be tedious; Outbyte Driver Updater scans for outdated drivers and identifies available updates, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or an application repair.

What not to do

Do not download wship6.dll from a random DLL website

A standalone download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows build, a modified file, or no valid digital signature. It can also conceal the real problem, such as component-store corruption or a missing dependency.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or the affected application’s official repair process instead.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Do not copy System32 into SysWOW64

These folders are not interchangeable. Their names are historical, but their contents serve different process architectures.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair step

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair tool, and there is no verified basis for manually registering wship6.dll.

This command is therefore not recommended:

regsvr32 wship6.dll

It may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found, without repairing Windows or Winsock.

Do not install unrelated runtimes first

Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET may be required by a particular application, but none is established as the provider of this Windows DLL. Install them only when the application’s official requirements or its own error message specifically calls for them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Advanced recovery options

System Restore

Use System Restore when the problem began after a recent update, driver installation, or software change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Start the restoration process.

System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed software or drivers.

Windows Recovery Environment

If the error appears before Windows fully starts, boot into Windows Recovery Environment and use its troubleshooting tools. Offline DISM and SFC require different paths because the installed Windows volume may not be C: in recovery mode. Identify the correct Windows drive before running offline commands.

Do not replace the file from another computer simply because Windows will not start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In-place Windows repair

If DISM, SFC, Windows Update, application repair, and System Restore do not resolve widespread system-file corruption, an in-place Windows repair may be appropriate. Use installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture, and back up important data first.

A clean installation should be considered only after less destructive recovery options have been assessed.

Frequently asked questions

Is wship6.dll safe?

The genuine Windows copy is a Microsoft system component associated with Winsock and IPv6. Safety depends on the file’s location, digital signature, and integrity. A file with the same name in an unexpected application folder is not automatically trustworthy.

Is wship6.dll an IPv6 file?

It is associated with the IPv6 transport side of Winsock. That does not mean every error is caused by IPv6 being disabled. Corruption, missing dependencies, architecture mismatches, security software, and application damage can produce similar messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download a replacement?

No. Repair the Windows component with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. If one application fails, repair or reinstall that application from its official source.

What if the error appears only in one game?

Run the game’s file-verification or repair feature. If that fails, reinstall the game from its official launcher or store. A one-application failure does not prove that Windows needs a manually copied DLL.

Does wship6.dll have one standard version or size?

No. Windows versions, editions, builds, and servicing levels can contain different file metadata. Do not use an old version listing as a replacement specification.

What if SFC says it could not repair the file?

Run DISM before SFC, repeat the scan, inspect the CBS details, and use a matching repair source if Windows Update cannot provide the files. If corruption continues, consider System Restore, Windows Recovery Environment, or an in-place repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I disable IPv6?

Not as a first fix. Disabling IPv6 does not repair a missing or corrupted Windows component and may affect applications or network configurations that use IPv6.

Will Device Manager fix wship6.dll?

No. Device Manager can help with a network adapter or driver problem, but it does not replace this protected Windows DLL. Use DISM and SFC for the file itself.
