wsmigplugin.dll errors may appear as “The program can’t start because wsmigplugin.dll is missing from your computer,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “wsmigplugin.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The safest fix is not to download the DLL. wsmigplugin.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Store licensing and App Package Deployment servicing. Repair Windows first, then identify the program or process requesting it.
The 60-second answer
- Restart Windows and install all available updates.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM, then System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart and repeat the action that produced the error.
- If the error remains, check Windows Security quarantine and identify the parent process.
- On Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012, use the applicable Microsoft servicing package rather than an isolated DLL.
Microsoft documents wsmigplugin.dll in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 hotfix files connected with Windows Store developer licensing and App Package Deployment. It also appears in Windows 8.1 servicing records. That does not prove that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain the same file.
What is wsmigplugin.dll?
wsmigplugin.dll is a Windows component used in servicing and migration-related operations around Windows Store licensing and app package deployment. Microsoft’s official hotfix documentation lists it in both x86 and x64 packages for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012:

Windows 8.1 servicing records show the same filename with later file sizes. These details identify Microsoft servicing packages, but they are not a reason to copy a file from another computer.
The file is not a normal game DLL, Visual C++ runtime, graphics driver, or ActiveX control. An old installer, migration task, Windows upgrade, Store-app deployment operation, or damaged system reference may request it.
Microsoft’s hotfix was designed for a specific Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 developer-licensing scenario. It requires a restart and should not be installed on an unrelated system simply because the filename appears in an error.
Is the file safe and Microsoft-signed?
The file is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it comes from a valid Windows servicing package. A copy found in an arbitrary application folder is not automatically trustworthy.

To inspect a copy:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
The absence of a signature, an invalid signature, or an unexpected location is a reason to scan the file and investigate the process that loaded it. Do not whitelist or restore an arbitrary download.
The commonly reported location C:WindowsSystem32migration may be associated with this component, but Microsoft’s public file tables do not establish one universal installed path. Do not treat System32 or SysWOW64 as general-purpose DLL storage.
What caused the error?
The wording helps narrow the problem:
| Message | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| “wsmigplugin.dll is missing” | The file was removed, quarantined, or a servicing package is incomplete |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies may be unavailable |
| “Error loading wsmigplugin.dll” | A startup task, installer, or Windows operation could not load it |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | The file may be corrupt, truncated, replaced, or from the wrong build |
Think about what happened immediately before the error:
- Windows Update or an upgrade was interrupted
- A system cleanup removed a servicing file
- Antivirus software quarantined the file
- The disk or Windows component store became corrupted
- An old Windows image was restored
- An obsolete Windows 8 installer or application was launched
- A scheduled task or third-party program retained a stale reference
A newer Windows installation can show this error even when the active problem is an old installer or scheduled task, not a missing Windows component.
Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
This is the best first step when the error appears during startup, upgrading, migration, or Store-app installation.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the operation again.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update instead.
If Windows Update fails, record its error code and continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly retry an interrupted update without repairing the component store.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
A successful result from SFC may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired damaged files. Try the failed operation again.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the placeholder with a valid repair source matching the installed Windows edition and build. Do not use that example path unchanged.
Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without checking what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by its full version; Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in path for this Windows component.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
An antivirus product may have removed a legitimate Windows file, or the error may be caused by a malicious file using the same name.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined or removed items.
- Open an entry to view its path, detection, and action.
- Restore it only if the original path and digital signature clearly match the Windows installation.
Protection History does not retain events indefinitely. If the quarantine event is old, it may no longer be available.
After checking the history, run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Click Scan now.
Do not add an arbitrary downloaded DLL to exclusions. If Defender repeatedly removes a file that DISM restores, investigate the detection and the file’s signature before taking further action.
Fix 4: Use the correct Microsoft servicing package on older Windows
The strongest official evidence for wsmigplugin.dll concerns:
- Windows 8
- Windows 8 Enterprise and Pro
- Windows Server 2012
- Windows 8.1 and related servicing records
If the computer runs one of these systems, read Microsoft’s documentation for the developer-license and App Package Deployment hotfix, then use the linked Microsoft Update Catalog package appropriate for the exact edition and architecture.
Do not install a Windows 8 package on Windows 10 or Windows 11 merely because the filename matches. Do not assume that version 1.0.0.1 identifies every compatible build.

If the error appears only when launching an old application, installer, or scheduled task, the Windows file may not be the real repair target.
Check the trigger:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select the Startup apps tab.
- Disable an unfamiliar entry only if you recognize it as related to the error.
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start.
- Check Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the time of the failure.
- Also check Reliability Monitor by searching for
reliability history.
Look for the executable, installer, update task, or service that mentions wsmigplugin.dll.
If one old program is responsible:
- Update it using the publisher’s current installer.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps to repair or uninstall it when those options exist.
- Reinstall the program only from its official publisher.
- Remove a broken scheduled task if it belongs to software you have already uninstalled.
Do not assume the file belongs to Visual C++, DirectX, a game, or a device driver. There is no verified evidence that those products install or repair it.
Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies
Microsoft lists separate x86 and x64 versions. They are not interchangeable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications, so the correct architecture depends on the process or servicing package involved. Do not choose a file based only on whether Windows is labeled “64-bit.”
Also, “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. Copying wsmigplugin.dll into an application directory will not repair that dependency and may create a version mismatch.
If the file exists, inspect its path and signature rather than replacing it. If it is damaged, DISM or the correct Microsoft package should restore the component as part of Windows servicing.
Fix 7: Update a related driver only when the process identifies one
A device driver is not the normal owner of wsmigplugin.dll, but an old installer or migration utility may be launched by hardware software. Update only the driver or utility connected to the process identified in Event Viewer or Task Manager.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command.
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 wsmigplugin.dll
There is no verified evidence that wsmigplugin.dll is an ActiveX or OLE control that supports manual registration. A missing-entry-point or registration error is expected if the DLL was not designed for that purpose.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Downloading wsmigplugin.dll from a DLL archive is risky because the file may:

- Hide the actual corruption or stale-process problem
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, System File Checker, the Microsoft Update Catalog, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair. The definitive fix for a third-party program that references the file is repairing or reinstalling that program from its official publisher.
Last resorts: System Restore or in-place repair
Use System Restore when the error began after a recent system change and a restore point predates it:
- Search Start for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Click System Restore.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Follow the wizard and restart.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without normally changing personal files, but review the affected programs shown by the wizard.
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and System Restore fail, back up personal data and perform an in-place Windows repair using installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture. A clean reinstall should be the final option after confirming that the storage device and important data are safe.

FAQ
Is wsmigplugin.dll a virus?
Not inherently. Microsoft documents it as a Windows component, but any copy can be replaced or impersonated. Verify its path, signature, and security history.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Do not manually choose a folder. Windows servicing must place the correct architecture and version where the operating system expects it.
Is it part of Visual C++ Redistributable?
There is no verified evidence that Visual C++ installs or repairs this file. Installing that runtime is not a primary fix.
Why does Windows 11 or Windows 10 request an older Windows file?
An obsolete installer, migration tool, scheduled task, restored image, or damaged upgrade reference may still request a component associated with older Windows servicing.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the exact error text, Windows edition and build, x86 or x64 architecture, triggering program, executable path, requested DLL path, Event Viewer details, DISM and SFC results, and any Defender quarantine entry. That information identifies whether the failure is active Windows corruption or a stale application reference.
