wsnmp32.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by network-management and some printer-related software. If Windows says it is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows and the affected application rather than downloading a replacement DLL from a random website.

What this file actually does

wsnmp32.dll is the Microsoft WinSNMP v2.0 Manager API implementation. WinSNMP allows SNMP manager applications to communicate with SNMP-enabled network devices using SNMPv1 and SNMPv2C.

That makes the file relevant to:

  • Network-monitoring and network-management programs
  • Printer-management software
  • Printer drivers and SNMP status monitors
  • Some language-monitor components used by the Windows print spooler
  • Older 32-bit applications that use the WinSNMP API

It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET runtime, or ordinary game dependency. Microsoft identifies Wsnmp32.dll as a Windows API implementation and documents the related import library as Wsnmp32.lib.

Other SNMP files are separate components:

  • wsnmp32.dll: WinSNMP API implementation
  • snmpapi.dll: SNMP utility or framework component
  • mgmtapi.dll: Microsoft SNMP Manager API using WinSNMP
  • snmp.exe and snmptrap.exe: SNMP services or components

Microsoft’s WinSNMP API documentation describes the API’s purpose and supported operations. Its SNMP system-files reference distinguishes these files rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Where should wsnmp32.dll be located

The correct location depends on Windows architecture and the process requesting the file:

  • On 32-bit Windows, system DLLs are normally under %WINDIR%System32.
  • On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system DLLs are normally under %WINDIR%SysWOW64.
  • Native 64-bit system files, when present for that Windows build, are normally under %WINDIR%System32.

The names are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system files, while System32 normally contains native 64-bit files.

A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL. Windows also redirects some file-system access for 32-bit processes. Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation for the File System Redirector and running 32-bit applications.

Do not assume that every Windows installation has exactly the same copy, path, version, or file size. Those details can depend on the Windows build and installed components.

Causes and symptoms

What you see Most likely explanation Best first action
“The program can’t start because wsnmp32.dll is missing” A Windows component is missing or damaged, or the application cannot find its dependency Install updates, then run DISM and SFC
“The code execution cannot proceed because wsnmp32.dll was not found” The file or one of its dependencies is unavailable to the calling process Repair Windows and check the application architecture
“Error loading wsnmp32.dll. The specified module could not be found” The named DLL may be missing, or a dependency may be missing Check Event Viewer and repair the affected application
“wsnmp32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” Wrong architecture, damaged file, incompatible replacement, or corruption Remove the untrusted replacement and repair Windows
“One or more exported functions missing in WSNMP32.DLL” The DLL is the wrong build or an incompatible copy is being loaded Check duplicate files, signatures, and application compatibility
spoolsv.exe crashes with wsnmp32.dll as the faulting module A printer driver, language monitor, or SNMP status component may be defective Troubleshoot the printer software before replacing Windows files
Only one network program fails The application may be damaged or incompatible Repair or reinstall that application

The wording varies between Windows versions and calling programs. In particular, “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wsnmp32.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL or application may be the missing module.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and repair system files

This is the safest first repair for a system-wide error, especially when several applications fail or the problem began after an interrupted update, disk problem, or system change.

Install pending updates

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Retry the program, printer setup, or service that reported the error.

If the error remains, repair the Windows component store and protected system files.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run the System File Checker command:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the affected application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a source. The official procedure is documented in Using System File Checker in Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Possible SFC results include:

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC found no damaged protected files. Continue with the application, driver, and duplicate-file checks below.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: Restart and test the affected program.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, use a matching Windows installation source or an in-place Windows repair.
  • DISM reports that source files could not be found: Microsoft documents using a matching installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess in its Windows image repair guidance.

Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without checking their result can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of system issues before repair, but its full repair features are optional and are not required for this Windows fix.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the program that reports the error

If only one network-management application fails, Windows may be healthy and the application may be damaged, outdated, or built for a different architecture.

Repair the application

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the program again.

If there is no Repair option, open the program’s installer from its official vendor or use Modify in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

If repair does not work:

  1. Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Download the current installer from the application’s official vendor.
  4. Install the version matching your Windows architecture and application requirements.
  5. Retry the operation that previously failed.

Do not copy wsnmp32.dll from another application folder into the program’s directory. That can create a version conflict or cause the application to load an untrusted file instead of the Windows copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check printer and spooler crashes separately

A missing-file dialog and a print-spooler crash are not the same problem.

If Event Viewer reports:

  • Application Error, often Event ID 1000
  • Faulting application: spoolsv.exe
  • Faulting module: wsnmp32.dll

the fault may be caused by a printer driver, language monitor, SNMP status monitor, or printer configuration. The fact that Windows names wsnmp32.dll does not prove that the Microsoft DLL is defective.

Confirm the spooler event

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Look for an error at the time of the crash.
  6. Record the printer driver, language monitor, faulting application, and exception details shown in the event.

Test the printer configuration

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Select the affected printer.
  5. Open Printer properties.
  6. Review the Ports and Advanced tabs.
  7. If the printer uses SNMP status monitoring or bidirectional support, temporarily disable that feature where the driver exposes the setting.
  8. Test printing again.

The exact setting varies by manufacturer. Disabling SNMP status monitoring is a diagnostic test, not a universal permanent fix. If printing works afterward, update or replace the printer driver and consult the printer manufacturer’s configuration guidance.

Reinstall the printer driver

  1. Disconnect the printer, if it is USB-connected.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Select the printer and choose Remove.
  4. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  5. Expand Print queues and Printers.
  6. Right-click the related printer entry and select Uninstall device.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Return to Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes, or run the printer manufacturer’s current installer.
  9. Install a driver matching the application and Windows architecture.
  10. Add the printer again and test a page.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated driver packages when identifying the correct printer driver manually is taking time; the driver installation feature is provided by the full version, and reinstalling the manufacturer’s driver remains the definitive choice for a printer-specific fault.

Microsoft Q&A reports have documented spooler crashes involving printer language monitors and SNMP-enabled printer configurations. Treat those reports as troubleshooting evidence, not as proof that disabling SNMP fixes every spooler crash.

Fix 4: Check for a wrong-architecture or duplicate DLL

A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit WinSNMP implementation. Installing or copying a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit program folder will not solve the error.

Check the application architecture

Look for the application’s documentation or installer options. Some programs identify themselves as x86, x64, or ARM64. If the program is older, it may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit.

Do not place a file from %WINDIR%System32 into an application directory simply because the name matches. Windows file-system redirection means that a 32-bit process may see a different system location than a 64-bit process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search for conflicting copies

A duplicate wsnmp32.dll in an application directory, the Windows root directory, or another search-path location may take precedence over the Microsoft-protected copy. A historical Microsoft Q&A case described a third-party copy in %WINDIR% taking precedence over the copy in %WINDIR%System32; that was a specific Windows 7 printer-path issue, not a general instruction to delete files.

To inspect a suspicious file:

  1. Right-click the file in File Explorer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  4. Select the signer and choose Details.
  5. Confirm that the signature is valid and identifies Microsoft.
  6. Check the Location and Details tabs.
  7. Compare the file’s location with the process and Windows architecture involved.

You can also use Microsoft Sysinternals Sigcheck to inspect signatures, but do not download replacement DLLs from third-party DLL catalogs.

Do not delete a system file blindly. If you identify a non-Microsoft duplicate:

  1. Record its exact path.
  2. Preserve a backup for vendor analysis.
  3. Confirm that the expected Microsoft-protected copy exists.
  4. Rename the confirmed conflicting file rather than deleting it immediately.
  5. Restart and test the application.
  6. Contact the vendor if the application still expects its own component.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware

Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Malware can also imitate the name of a legitimate Windows DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent actions for wsnmp32.dll.
  5. Check the file’s exact path and digital signature before restoring anything.
  6. Restore a quarantined file only when it is Microsoft-signed and located where Windows expects it.
  7. Run a Full scan.

Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make the error disappear. If a newly restored file is quarantined again, investigate the file and the affected application instead of repeatedly overriding protection.

Fix 6: Do not use Regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is generally used for COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. wsnmp32.dll is a Windows API implementation, not a normal self-registering COM server.

Running this command is not a supported repair:

regsvr32 wsnmp32.dll

It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.” That result does not mean the WinSNMP API needs registration. Microsoft explains the relationship between regsvr32, DllRegisterServer, and registration errors in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.

Repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.

Fix 7: Do not install SNMP just because the name appears in the error

SNMP service availability varies by Windows edition and version. Installing an SNMP optional feature does not automatically repair a corrupted WinSNMP API file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the affected application genuinely requires an SNMP service:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select System > Optional features.
  3. Select View features.
  4. Search for the SNMP-related feature required by your Windows edition.
  5. Install it only if the application’s documentation specifically requires it.
  6. Restart Windows and test again.

This is separate from repairing wsnmp32.dll. Do not add an optional feature as a substitute for DISM, SFC, or a proper application repair.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Avoid websites that offer a standalone wsnmp32.dll download. A downloaded file may have:

  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • Missing exports
  • An invalid or absent Microsoft signature
  • A damaged dependency relationship
  • Malware or an unwanted modification

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create DLL search-order conflicts. There is no verified standalone Microsoft consumer wsnmp32.dll redistributable download. Microsoft documents the WinSNMP API and library for developers, not a separate DLL download sites package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the official Windows installation media, or the affected program’s official installer instead.

If the error still remains

Escalate in this order:

  1. Review the exact application or spooler event in Event Viewer.
  2. Confirm the calling process architecture.
  3. Check the DLL path and Microsoft signature.
  4. Remove or rename only a confirmed third-party duplicate.
  5. Reinstall the affected printer driver or application.
  6. Use a matching Windows installation source for DISM.
  7. Perform an in-place Windows repair if protected files remain damaged.
  8. Contact the application or printer vendor if only its software fails.

If the failure began immediately after a driver, update, or application change, System Restore or uninstalling the implicated software may help. Use System Restore as a fallback, not as the first response to a protected Windows DLL error.

FAQ

Is wsnmp32.dll a virus?

The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with the same name in an application folder, the Windows root directory, or another unexpected location may be a conflicting third-party copy or malware. Check its path and Microsoft digital signature.

Should I copy wsnmp32.dll from another computer?

No. Windows builds, architectures, servicing states, and exports can differ. Repair the current installation with Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or matching installation media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is wsnmp32.dll required for games?

Normally, no. It is a WinSNMP API component used by network-management and some printer-related software. A game error naming it should be investigated as an application installation or dependency problem rather than fixed with a random DLL download.

Does Windows 11 always store it in System32?

No. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy is normally associated with %WINDIR%SysWOW64, while native 64-bit files are normally under %WINDIR%System32. The calling process determines which copy it can load.

Will registering the DLL fix the error?

No. wsnmp32.dll is not normally repaired with regsvr32. Run DISM followed by SFC and repair the application or printer driver that calls it.

Why does the error mention a missing module when the file exists?

The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible component. Check Event Viewer, application logs, architecture, signatures, and the application installation rather than assuming that replacing the visible file will help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if spoolsv.exe crashes and names wsnmp32.dll?

Investigate the printer driver, language monitor, SNMP status monitoring, and printer port configuration. Replacing the Windows DLL may hide the real defect and allow the spooler crash to return.
