wssync.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, not a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game-specific runtime. If Windows says it is missing, not found, corrupted, or could not be loaded, repair Windows or the affected Store app instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is associated with Windows Store licensing and app entitlement services. Its embedded description is Windows Store Licensing Sync Client, and public Windows inventories place it in C:WindowsSystem32.

The file is clearly documented in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10-era installations. Current Windows 11 installations can differ by release, so do not assume that every Windows 11 computer must contain the same file.

What the wssync.dll error means
Common reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because wssync.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wssync.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading wssync.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting wssync.dll.”
- “wssync.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording matters, but it does not identify the root cause by itself.
“Missing” or “not found” can mean that the file was removed, damaged, or is unavailable at the location Windows expects. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by wssync.dll is missing.
“Not designed to run on Windows” usually indicates corruption, an incomplete update, a mismatched file, or an architecture problem. It does not automatically indicate malware.
Before repairing anything, note the affected program, the complete error text, the Windows version and build, and any path shown in the message.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update is one of the most plausible causes of a damaged Windows component.
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available quality, security, and system updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Open the affected app again.
If the error disappears, the missing or mismatched component was likely restored during servicing.
If Windows Update fails, repeatedly reverses the update, or reports damaged system files, continue with DISM and SFC below. Microsoft also provides Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store. Run DISM first.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait until DISM finishes. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program that reported
wssync.dll.
A successful result is a message saying that SFC found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not perform the requested operation, restart and run the scan again from an elevated Command Prompt. If DISM says source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source rather than a DLL downloaded from the internet. Microsoft documents the DISM and SFC repair procedure.
The manual process involves waiting through two scans and interpreting their results. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file problems and show what it detects before repair; the repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update followed by DISM and SFC remains the built-in repair path.
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the same application still fails, the problem may be a dependent module, a damaged Store registration, or a stale startup entry rather than wssync.dll itself.

This path is most useful when only one Microsoft Store app or Store game reports the error.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected app.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and wait.
- Start the app again.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset. Resetting can remove the app’s local data and sign you out, so use it after Repair.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the affected app.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If necessary, select Reset.
If the app has its own Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair command, run that before altering Windows files. For a Store game, this is often the correct way to restore damaged application content.
If Repair and Reset fail, uninstall the app, restart Windows, and reinstall it from Microsoft Store. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the app or game, then install pending Store updates before testing it again.

Fix 4: Reset the Microsoft Store cache
A damaged Store cache can interfere with licensing and app installation.

- Select OK.
- Wait while the blank Command Prompt window closes and Microsoft Store opens.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected app again.
If wsreset.exe does not open, returns an error, or the app still fails, update Windows and Microsoft Store, then use the app Repair and Reset options. Microsoft documents this cache reset procedure in its Microsoft Store troubleshooting instructions.
Also confirm that you are signed in to the correct Microsoft account. Licensing failures can look like application failures when an app cannot confirm its entitlement.

Security software may quarantine a system file if it has been altered, damaged, or incorrectly detected.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
wssync.dll. - Record the detection name, file path, and action taken.
- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
Restore the file only when the detection is clearly identified as a false positive and the file is confirmed to be a Microsoft Windows component. If the detection is uncertain, do not restore it. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or Windows recovery to obtain a clean system file instead.
If another antivirus product is installed, check its quarantine and history screens. Do not disable protection merely to copy a DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 6: Check the file location and architecture

Do not assume that a 32-bit program needs a separately downloaded 32-bit copy. Windows handles system DLL redirection for 32-bit applications, and copying files between System32, SysWOW64, and application folders can create an architecture mismatch or break servicing.
To check whether the file exists:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Open
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
WSSync.dll. - Right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures and Details tabs if available.
The file may be absent on some Windows releases, so absence alone is not proof that the installation is broken. If the error names a different path, record that path. A copy inside an application folder may be a leftover or an incorrectly bundled file rather than the protected Windows component.

If a 32-bit application fails while other programs work, repair or reinstall that application. Do not choose a file solely because its version number is higher or because it is labeled x86 or x64.
Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when the evidence points there
wssync.dll is not a graphics, audio, chipset, or Visual C++ runtime file. Device Manager is therefore not a primary fix for this error. Consider driver repair only if the same failure began after a hardware change, Windows upgrade, or device driver installation and Event Viewer identifies a related device or service.
To check for driver problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. It is optional and is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected Store app.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or Windows recovery
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after a known update, program installation, or security event and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for
Create a restore point. - Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not guaranteed to restore every file or repair component-store corruption. If it does not help, back up important data and use Windows recovery options. A repair installation or reset should be considered only after DISM, SFC, Store repair, and application reinstall have failed.

Do not download wssync.dll from a random DLL website
An arbitrary download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or a modified binary. It can also leave the Windows component store damaged, so the original problem returns after the copied file is removed or replaced.

Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, or the app folder
Manual copying can cause version mismatches, access errors, loader failures, and future servicing problems. It also hides the real cause when a dependency or Store registration is damaged.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration procedures such as DllRegisterServer. There is no established evidence that WSSync.dll is a self-registering ActiveX or COM component.

It will not restore a missing Windows component and may produce another confusing error. Microsoft documents the purpose and limitations of regsvr32.
If the error still appears
Collect these details before seeking further support:
- Windows edition, version, and build
- The exact error text
- The application or game that fails
- Whether every program fails or only one
- The path shown in the error
- Whether
C:WindowsSystem32WSSync.dllexists - SFC and DISM results
- Any Event Viewer application or side-by-side error
- Antivirus quarantine or protection-history details
- Whether the issue began after an update, installation, or security event
If the message appears at every boot but no legitimate Store app uses licensing, inspect Settings > Apps > Startup, Task Scheduler, and recently removed programs for a leftover entry. Do not delete wssync.dll to silence the message. Repair or remove the entry that is trying to load it.
