WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers Hands-On Preview: A Promising Twist on a Familiar Formula

Jordan Andow’s pre-release, three-hour hands-on found a Soulslike with an unusual dodge-powered combat loop, a supernatural late-Ming setting, and connected regions rather than an open world.

This is a pre-release hands-on preview, not a review of the finished game. The impressions below reflect Jordan Andow’s three-hour demo session, published June 18, 2025, before WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers launched on July 24, 2025.

WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers gives the familiar Soulslike combat loop a distinct emphasis: well-timed dodges generate power for weapon techniques and spells. In Jordan Andow’s three-hour hands-on, that idea made combat feel graceful and rewarding, while the game’s supernatural take on late-Ming Shu supplied a strong identity. The trade-off is that players who prefer parrying and blocking may find the demo’s dodge-led approach less to their taste.

What makes WUCHANG’s combat different?

The foundation will be familiar to Soulslike players: light and heavy attacks, stamina management, dangerous enemies, and weapons with distinct moves. The notable twist is Skyborn Might, a resource earned through successful, well-timed dodges and spent on offensive abilities.

In his preview, Andow describes weapon abilities that draw on the resource built by dodging. Game Informer describes Skyborn Might as powering spells, while PC Gamer reports that successful evasions provide avian energy for weapon techniques. PC Gamer also notes that the demo allowed players to switch between two weapons with a special transition move.

The result, as PC Gamer experienced it, is an evasion-and-counter rhythm: avoid an attack at the right moment, build energy, then turn that opening into offense. That can make dodging feel like an active part of a combat plan rather than simply a way to get clear.

The dodge-versus-parry trade-off

PC Gamer found the dodge-led loop satisfying when its timing clicked, but also felt that the demo placed less emphasis on parrying and blocking. That is a previewer’s impression of the demo, not a definitive statement about every encounter or the released game. Still, it points to a useful question for players: do you enjoy making evasions the center of your offense, or do you prefer a broader defensive toolkit in which parries and blocks play a prominent role?

Where and when is the game set?

WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers is set in a supernatural, alternate-history version of Shu in western China during the late Ming Dynasty. It is a fantasy interpretation, not a historically accurate simulation. The Outerhaven and Game Informer describe the game’s protagonist, Bai Wuchang, as an amnesiac pirate warrior afflicted by Feathering, also called Ornithropy. The disease brings monstrous transformation and is tied to the supernatural abilities she can use.

That premise gives the game a different surface from many fantasy Soulslikes, but the preview’s appeal is not only the setting. Andow’s strongest impression was a sense of accomplishment and wonder that he personally compared with his experience of Elden Ring. That is one writer’s subjective response, not a claim that the games are equivalent in quality or design.

Is WUCHANG open world?

Not according to Andow’s hands-on account. He describes large, interconnected areas linked by a central temple hub, with secrets to find, rather than an open world. His impression is that the demo’s structure sits between level-based Soulslikes and open-world ones: exploration has room to breathe, but the game is organized around connected regions and a hub.

What did the preview establish—and what didn’t it?

Andow’s three unrestricted hours gave him a basis for judging the combat feel, setting, and early exploration structure. His overall read was that WUCHANG borrows recognizable Soulslike foundations while seeking its own identity through its setting and methodical, dodge-oriented combat. The preview appeared before launch, so it should be read as a hands-on impression of the demo build, not a review of the full release.

The game launched July 24, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, according to the preview and Game Informer. Xbox Wire documented plans for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, including day-one Game Pass availability at launch, and later confirmed the July 24 release. Those are launch-era facts; they do not establish current storefront prices, regional catalog availability, or present subscription terms.

What happened after launch?

In a July 29, 2026 report, PC Gamer said WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers had reached five million players across platforms. The same report said publisher 505 Games had partnered with original creator Xia Siyuan and his new studio, Indolphinity, on a new WUCHANG chapter. It described the project as being in preparation; the report did not establish a release date.
