If wudfusbbid.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first, then repair the fingerprint, biometric, or USB device driver that triggered the error.
This is not a normal game runtime or general-purpose application DLL. It belongs to the Windows Driver Foundation and Windows Biometric Framework, which help Windows communicate with user-mode device drivers and biometric hardware such as fingerprint readers. Microsoft explains the relevant driver architecture in its UMDF documentation and Biometric Framework overview.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website or copy one into System32, SysWOW64, DriverStore, or an application folder. The file may have the wrong architecture, version, signature, or dependencies, and replacing it manually can leave the underlying driver package broken.

Public metadata identifies one Windows 8-era build with these reported properties:
- Product: Microsoft Windows Operating System
- Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- File version:
6.2.9200.16384 - Architecture: 32-bit PE32
- Size: 40,960 bytes
- Original filename:
WudfUsbBID.dll - Internal name:
WudfUsbBID
That record is public file metadata, not a complete inventory of every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build. The exact location also varies by Windows build and driver package. On some systems, records associate it with a DriverStore path under:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
A missing-file message can therefore mean that Windows lost a protected component, that a driver package is incomplete, or that another dependency could not load.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
Windows Update is the safest first repair because it can restore protected components and supply a compatible device driver.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- In Windows 11, choose Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the fingerprint reader, biometric sign-in, USB device, or application that produced the error.
If the error disappears, the missing component or related driver was likely restored through servicing. If Windows reports that everything is up to date but the error remains, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired source. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected biometric or USB device again.
How to interpret the results
If DISM completes successfully and SFC says it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test the device. This is the expected successful result.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, Windows protected files are probably intact. The problem is more likely to be the device driver, a dependency, or a historical Event Viewer entry.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again after installing updates and restart. If the corruption remains, use System Restore or the Windows repair-reinstall option described later.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed is not always useful. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC commands remain the normal first choice.

Fix 3: Update or reinstall the related device driver
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Because wudfusbbid.dll is associated with USB biometric input, identify the device that was active when the error appeared. It may be a fingerprint reader, biometric sensor, smart-card reader, USB security device, or an OEM component that Windows installed with the computer.
Check optional driver updates
In Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install the relevant biometric, USB, chipset, or security-device driver.
- Restart Windows.
In Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select View optional updates, if shown.
- Expand the driver section.
- Install the relevant driver.
- Restart.
Reinstall through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as:
- Biometric devices
- Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Human Interface Devices
- Security devices
- Other devices
- Look for a yellow warning icon or an entry that appeared after the problem began.
- Right-click the suspected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device only when you have a replacement from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Device Manager again and select Action > Scan for hardware changes if Windows does not rediscover the device.
- Install the current driver from Windows Update or the computer or device manufacturer.
Microsoft’s driver guidance recommends Windows Update first and the hardware manufacturer when Windows cannot provide a suitable driver.
The practical difficulty is identifying which of many installed drivers is stale or incomplete. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while the actual driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the safest source when available.
What success looks like
The device should appear without a warning icon in Device Manager. Fingerprint enrollment should open normally, Windows Hello should detect the sensor, or the affected USB hardware should work without the DLL message.
If reinstalling one device changes nothing, check other recently updated biometric, chipset, USB, and security-device packages. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency or incomplete package rather than the named DLL alone.
Fix 4: Roll back a recently changed driver
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the error began immediately after a driver update, rolling back may be more appropriate than installing another version.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the fingerprint, biometric, or USB device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason when prompted.
- Select Yes.
- Restart Windows.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, use the manufacturer’s previous stable driver or System Restore. Do not remove several unrelated drivers at once, because that makes it harder to identify the change that fixed or caused the problem.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine a Windows or driver file, although no specific wudfusbbid.dll false-positive campaign has been verified.

This option is useful when DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store. Microsoft describes the process in its Windows repair-reinstall instructions.
If the option is unavailable, use the appropriate Windows recovery or installation-media process rather than inserting a downloaded DLL into a system folder.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It works when a DLL exposes a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; the presence of a .dll extension does not mean the file should be registered.
A command such as this is therefore not a default fix:
regsvr32 wudfusbbid.dll
A driver-related Windows component should be restored through Windows servicing or its driver package. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains when registration applies.
Windows Features are also unlikely to restore this component. You do not need to enable a random feature or install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET simply because the error mentions a DLL. No specific redistributable package has been verified as responsible for wudfusbbid.dll.
Causes of the error
The most plausible causes are:
| Cause | Appropriate fix |
|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted protected Windows file | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Incomplete or incompatible biometric or USB driver | Update or reinstall the device driver |
| Failed update or servicing operation | DISM/SFC, System Restore, or Windows repair reinstall |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify quarantine, scan, then repair Windows |
| Disk corruption or malware | Full scan, storage investigation, and official recovery |
| Historical Event Viewer entry | Confirm whether the device actually fails |
A program may also report that the file is missing when a dependency cannot load. That does not prove wudfusbbid.dll itself is absent.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
The known public metadata record is for a 32-bit PE32 build from the Windows 8 era. Do not treat that record as proof that the same file should be manually copied to a current 64-bit Windows installation.
A 64-bit Windows system can run 32-bit components, but Windows places and services files according to the driver package and operating-system build. Copying a 32-bit DLL into System32 or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64 can create an architecture mismatch and will not repair the driver package.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the correct hardware-driver package instead.
FAQ
Is wudfusbbid.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and USB biometric input. Its presence does not by itself prove that every copy found on disk is safe, so location, signature, and driver-package context still matter.
Is it a game DLL?
No verified game or application dependency was identified. If a particular launcher displays the message, determine whether the error is actually from that application or from Windows, Device Manager, or Event Viewer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I download wudfusbbid.dll?
No. Restore it through Windows servicing or the original biometric or USB driver package. Random downloads can contain malware or the wrong build and architecture.
Why does Event Viewer mention it when everything works?
Event Viewer can retain a historical warning from an update, device installation, or temporary startup failure. If fingerprint login, biometric enrollment, and the USB device work normally, treat the event differently from an active startup error.
Where is the file located?
The path depends on the Windows build and driver package. Public records associate some Windows 8-era installations with a DriverStore location, but there is no single path that applies to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 system.
What should I collect if the problem continues?
Record the exact error text, Windows version and build, the biometric or USB device model, the Device Manager status code, whether the issue appears only in Event Viewer, and whether it began after an update, driver change, antivirus action, or device installation.
