There is no single official Wuthering Waves tier list, and the best starter choice depends on what you need: an easy early-game character, a role your team lacks, or value in a particular endgame mode. Compare characters by role and team fit rather than treating one guide’s ranking as a universal verdict. If a free five-star selector appears in your account, check its live in-game Convene screen for the available choices before deciding.
How to read a Wuthering Waves tier list
Tier lists can rank different things. Pocket Gamer says its list is based on PvE performance and possible transition into late-game content. Prydwen separates rankings for Tower of Adversity and Whimpering Wastes, and describes its individual-character list as value-focused. Wutheringlab cautions that highly ranked characters do not necessarily make a strong team when combined without considering composition. These are editorial assessments, not official Kuro Games rankings, and their tiers should not be merged into one definitive order.
For a dated reference point, Pocket Gamer says its list was updated September 4, 2026 for Version 3.6.3, adding Qingxiao and Jingran. Rankings can change as the game changes; treat that date as context, not a guarantee that the assessment reflects subsequent balance or roster updates.
Who should you pick at the start?
Choose for the account and the way you want to play, not just a tier label. A useful comparison asks whether the character feels comfortable in early content, what role they fill, whether they fit the characters you already have, and which game mode the ranking actually covers.

- For immediate comfort: Favor a character whose playstyle you enjoy and whose role is useful to your current team. A high individual tier does not by itself tell you how easy the character will feel or how well they fit your roster.
- For a team gap: Identify what your existing lineup needs before selecting another character. Team composition can matter more than a character’s standalone placement.
- For a specific endgame goal: Check rankings for that mode—such as Tower of Adversity or Whimpering Wastes—instead of relying on a general PvE list.
- For long-term value: Consider whether the character can remain useful as your account develops, while remembering that tier lists are assessments made under particular criteria and may change.
Rover: compare forms in context
Pocket Gamer’s assessment illustrates why a tier alone can mislead: it places Rover-Havoc in S/A tier while calling the character situational, and ranks Rover-Spectro at B tier with an A-tier assessment for early game. Those are that guide’s evaluations, not fixed or official game facts. The difference also shows why early-game comfort and broad performance should be treated as separate questions.
Which Resonator can you select for free?
Some guides describe a free five-star choice early on, and Game8’s March 2026 guide describes a Beginner’s Choice Convene with five options. However, current official confirmation of the selector’s availability, eligibility, and exact pool on October 7, 2026 is not established here. Open the in-game Convene screen and verify the choices shown for your account; do not assume a guide’s list is still available.

Do not confuse a time-limited event selection with a permanent beginner selector. Kuro Games’ Starpath Reverbs notice named Jiyan, Yinlin, Jinhsi, Changli, Zhezhi, and Xiangli Yao as selectable featured Resonators under that event’s banner-specific rules. That notice documents an event, not a standing starter option or the banners live on October 7, 2026.

Once you have a character, use the in-game Guide Depot for recommendations covering Echoes, upgrade priorities, Resonance Chain nodes, weapons, teammates, and other build details. Kuro Games notes that Guide Depot data refreshes may be delayed, so check the displayed recommendations against your current version and available roster.
If you prefer playing with a controller, Kuro Games’ Version 1.3 notes confirm support for specific controllers on mobile. That does not establish compatibility with every controller or phone combination; check support for your device before relying on one. A controller is optional and does not change a character’s tier or combat value.
