If Windows says it is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement file.
What this file actually does
The WWAN name means Wireless Wide Area Network, usually cellular or mobile-broadband connectivity. wwanapi.dll is associated with Mbnapi, the Windows API that lets software communicate with cellular modem functions through the operating system.

Microsoft documents the Mobile Broadband API as the interface applications use to manage cellular connections, interfaces, signal state, and related modem operations. It has been supported since Windows 7. The API includes interfaces such as IMbnConnectionManager and IMbnInterfaceManager.

C:WindowsSystem32wwanapi.dll
The wider cellular stack also includes the Windows WWAN service, whose service name is WwanSvc. That service controls cellular data connectivity, but a stopped service is different from a missing or corrupted DLL.
Check the spelling before doing anything else
Do not confuse these files:
wwanapi.dll: Mobile Broadband API for cellular connectivity.wlanapi.dll: Wireless LAN API for Wi-Fi.wwapi.dll: A different Windows API file.wwansvc.dll: A WWAN AutoConfig service binary.mbnapi.dll: A name used in Microsoft Mobile Broadband API development documentation and descriptions.
If the error actually names wlanapi.dll, Wi-Fi or Windows Server Wireless LAN guidance may apply instead. A fix for wlanapi.dll does not automatically repair wwanapi.dll.

| What you see | Most likely direction | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Several applications fail with the same error | Corrupted Windows component or servicing problem | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Only one older application or game fails | Damaged installation or incompatible application dependency | Repair or reinstall that program |
| The error began after antivirus activity | Quarantine or false positive | Check Protection History |
| The file exists but Windows says the module cannot be loaded | Missing dependency, wrong architecture, or damaged file | Check signature, logs, and application architecture |
| Cellular networking stopped working without a DLL dialog | WWAN service, modem driver, SIM, or device issue | Check WwanSvc and Device Manager |
The dialog says wlanapi.dll |
Wi-Fi API problem, not this file | Confirm the filename before repairing anything |
A message such as “The specified module could not be found” can mean that wwanapi.dll itself is absent. It can also mean Windows found the file but could not load one of its dependencies. Similarly, “not designed to run on Windows” often indicates corruption, an incompatible replacement, or an architecture mismatch.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart
Windows Update is the safest source for a matching protected system component.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the application that reported
wwanapi.dll.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and test the affected program again.
If the error disappears after restarting, the missing component was likely restored or its servicing state was corrected. If it remains, continue with the component-store repair below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows component store with DISM before running System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for a while. Do not close the window during the repair.
Recommended Free Tools
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after SFC finishes, then launch the affected application again.
The result tells you what happened:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption. Investigate the application, architecture, dependency, or the exact error spelling.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, check Windows Update, and consider an in-place repair installation if the problem continues.
These commands repair Windows files and their component store. They do not reinstall a damaged third-party application.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows repair steps is the main obstacle, Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of detected problems; repair actions are performed by the full version, while DISM and SFC remain the official Windows repair path.
Fix 3: Confirm whether the file exists in the Windows folders
Do not copy a replacement DLL into a system folder. First check whether Windows already has the file.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
where /r "%windir%System32" wwanapi.dll
where /r "%windir%SysWOW64" wwanapi.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 commonly contains 32-bit system files. The names are confusing, so do not judge architecture from the folder name alone.
If the command finds a file, its presence does not prove it is healthy. Check its Properties and Digital Signatures tab. A file in the expected Windows directory with a valid Microsoft signature is more trustworthy than one found beside an application executable or in a temporary folder.
If the file is absent, return to DISM and SFC rather than downloading it manually. If it exists but is damaged or unsigned, use Windows repair to restore the correct copy.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the program that reports the error
If Windows itself is stable and only one program fails, the program may have a damaged installation, invalid import, or compatibility problem.
Try the built-in repair route first:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its menu or select Advanced options.
- Choose Repair, where available.
- Restart the application.
If there is no repair option:
- Uninstall the application from the same settings page.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the original software vendor or use the application’s official launcher.
- Reinstall it.
- Apply the program’s own updates before testing again.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files command before removing the entire game. The exact menu depends on the launcher.
Do not place wwanapi.dll beside the program’s executable as a workaround. That can create a version or architecture mismatch and may prevent Windows servicing from correcting the real problem.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
If the error started immediately after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined a file or flagged a damaged copy.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Inspect detections that match the time the error began.
- Expand the detection and check the original file path.
Restore a file only when you can verify that it is the legitimate Microsoft copy in the expected Windows directory and the detection is a false positive. Do not restore an unsigned copy found in an application or temporary directory.
If malware is possible, leave the file quarantined, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again, and allowing a file is appropriate only when it is trusted.
Fix 6: Check the WWAN service for cellular connection failures
Use this step when the actual problem is that cellular networking no longer works, not simply because an application displays a missing-DLL message.

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
sc query WwanSvc
This displays the state of the Windows WWAN service. A stopped service can explain a cellular-connection failure, but starting it does not restore a missing wwanapi.dll.
You can also check the service graphically:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find WWAN AutoConfig.
- Check its status.
- If it is stopped, right-click it and select Start.
- Test the cellular connection.
If the service will not start, or the modem is not detected, inspect the driver instead.

Fix 7: Update the cellular modem driver
A cellular modem driver, disabled device, SIM issue, or hardware problem can look like a WWAN API failure even when wwanapi.dll is intact.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for the cellular modem or mobile-broadband adapter.
- Also check Other devices for an unknown device.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the device has a warning icon:
- Right-click it.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the latest driver from the computer or modem manufacturer’s official support channel.
Do not treat a driver reinstall as the primary repair for a missing system DLL. It is appropriate when Device Manager shows a modem problem or when cellular connectivity fails without a file-integrity error.
If checking every modem and chipset driver manually is taking longer than the repair itself, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For a missing or corrupted Windows DLL, DISM, SFC, and Windows repair remain the appropriate fixes.
Fix 8: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The known file examples include both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows builds. The exact file version and size depend on the Windows release, architecture, language, and servicing state, so file size alone cannot authenticate a copy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not use interchangeable DLL binaries. A manually downloaded file may also come from a different Windows build.
If the error says the file is not designed to run on Windows:
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Confirm that Windows is fully updated.
- Remove any manually copied DLL.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
Do not use regsvr32 to solve this problem. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing Windows component, repair dependencies, or make a mismatched binary compatible. Commands such as these are not a general repair:
regsvr32 wwanapi.dll
regsvr32 /u wwanapi.dll
regsvr32 /i wwanapi.dll
An entry-point error from regsvr32 is usually evidence that registration was the wrong approach.
Fix 9: Use System Restore when the timing is obvious
If the problem began immediately after a driver, update, cleanup utility, or software installation, System Restore may be appropriate.

- Open Control Panel.
- Select Recovery.
- Choose Open System Restore.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore.
You can also press Win + R, enter:
rstrui.exe
and press Enter.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files. It cannot help if no suitable restore point exists.
Fix 10: Repair-reinstall Windows
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component and the problem affects multiple applications, use Windows recovery rather than a random DLL source.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Microsoft describes this process as reinstalling the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Windows 10 recovery menus differ, so use the applicable Microsoft recovery guidance for that installation.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download wwanapi.dll from an unknown DLL archive and copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- the application’s installation folder
The file may be the wrong Windows build, wrong architecture, unsigned, modified, or bundled with malware. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match its dependencies or Windows servicing state. Manual copying often replaces the visible error with a “not designed to run on Windows” message.
There is no official standalone Microsoft wwanapi.dll redistributable. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, and the original vendor installer when the affected application itself is damaged.
FAQ
Is wwanapi.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Mobile Broadband API and the Windows operating system. It is not normally installed by Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
Is wwanapi.dll the same as wlanapi.dll?
No. wwanapi.dll concerns cellular or mobile-broadband functionality. wlanapi.dll concerns Wi-Fi. Confirm the spelling in the error dialog and event log.
Should I install a runtime package?
Not as a fix for this file. Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET may repair other DLL problems, but they are not the normal source of wwanapi.dll.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. regsvr32 is not a general Windows DLL repair utility, and this API component should not be registered merely because an application reports it.
What information is useful if the error remains?
Record the exact error text, Windows edition and build, whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit, when the issue began, whether the file exists in the Windows directory, whether its signature is valid, and whether Windows Security quarantined it. That information separates a Windows component problem from an application, dependency, driver, or architecture failure.
