Start with this three-minute diagnosis
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program or game shows the error
- Whether it appears during Windows startup, when launching an app, or when using cellular networking
- Whether the message names a Windows folder or the application’s own folder
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
wwanprotdim.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. It belongs to the WWAN Device Interface Module, part of the Windows wireless wide-area network stack used by cellular and mobile-broadband hardware.
If the error affects startup, several programs, or a Windows path, repair Windows first. If it points to one application’s directory, repair that application after checking Windows component health.

What wwanprotdim.dll does
WWAN means wireless wide-area network. In practical terms, it covers cellular data connections through an internal modem, USB modem, or other mobile-broadband hardware.

Windows’ cellular architecture includes the WWAN service and related protocol components. wwanprotdim.dll is not a general-purpose Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET library. It is an inbox Windows component associated with that cellular subsystem.
The file commonly appears below:
%WinDir%System32
That does not mean every installation has the same path, file size, or version. Windows releases and processor architectures use different builds. Historical Microsoft servicing records show the component shipping with Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10, with both x86 and x64 variants.
System32 is also not a reliable shortcut for determining bitness. On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system components normally use System32, while 32-bit components may be redirected through SysWOW64. Do not copy a file between those folders based only on its name.

What the error message actually means
These messages can have different causes:
| Message pattern | What it can indicate |
|---|---|
| “wwanprotdim.dll is missing” or “was not found” | The file is absent, inaccessible, or the application cannot locate it |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The named DLL may be missing, or a dependency needed by it may be missing |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” | The file may be corrupt, incompatible, or replaced with the wrong build |
| “The module failed to load” | Windows found the file but could not load it or one of its dependencies |
| An error naming an application folder | The application installation or its loader configuration may be damaged |
The full path in the dialog is useful. A path below %WinDir% points toward Windows repair. A path below a game or application folder points toward that program’s Repair, Reinstall, or Verify files function.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
This is the fastest safe repair for a missing or outdated inbox component.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on it.
- Try the affected program or cellular connection again.
Windows servicing can restore or replace protected system components. Restarting also completes pending component operations that cannot finish while Windows is running.
Microsoft’s update instructions are available on its Windows Update support page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the error began immediately after an update, do not repeatedly install random DLLs. Restart first, then continue with DISM and SFC below. If the update itself appears to have caused the problem, Windows Recovery can also remove a recent update.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Use an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files that System File Checker uses.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program or cellular feature again.
A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error disappears, the protected Windows component was likely damaged or incomplete.
The official Microsoft System File Checker instructions explain why DISM should run before SFC.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Windows Update cannot provide DISM’s repair files, use a repair source from the same Windows version:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a known-good Windows installation source. Do not point DISM at a random folder or an older release.
Repeating the same commands without checking what failed rarely helps. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the component and system issues that make manual DISM and SFC troubleshooting difficult; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version, and it is not required when Windows repair succeeds.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false detection, or malware removal can leave a Windows component incomplete.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries involving
wwanprotdim.dll. - Expand an entry to see its path, detection, and action.
- Do not restore or allow the file automatically.
- Restore it only if the path and file clearly match the genuine Microsoft Windows component and you have confirmed the detection is false.
- Run a full scan after resolving the quarantine entry.
- Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC afterward.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
If the file was found in an unexpected application folder, a temporary directory, or a download location, treat it as suspicious rather than restoring it. A genuine Windows component should not be replaced with an unverified copy merely to make an error dialog disappear.
Fix 4: Reinstall the WWAN or modem driver
Use this branch when the problem appeared after a modem, cellular adapter, firmware, or network-driver change, or when Device Manager shows a warning icon.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a cellular modem, WWAN adapter, mobile-broadband device, or an entry with a warning symbol.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a device status code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- If the issue began after an update, try Roll Back Driver if available.
- Otherwise, choose Uninstall Device, restart Windows, and allow Windows to redetect it.
- If Windows does not reinstall the correct driver, download the driver from the PC or modem manufacturer’s official support page.
- Install the package for the exact model and Windows architecture.
- Restart and test the cellular connection.
A driver reinstall can restore WWAN functionality, but it does not replace Windows component repair. If the file itself is missing from the Windows component store, return to DISM and SFC.
Driver hunting is especially error-prone on systems with several network adapters. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale or mismatched drivers and show the detected problem; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and the PC manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source for a model-specific modem.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application
If the error names a game or application folder instead of a Windows folder, the program’s installation may be damaged. The application may be loading the Windows component through its own launcher, or its installation may contain a broken loader or dependency.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf repair does not work:
- Uninstall the affected application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or publisher.
- Install the current release.
- Apply its updates.
- Test it before adding unofficial modifications or replacement DLLs.
Do not assume that reinstalling the application replaces a missing Windows system file. If the same error appears in multiple programs, repair Windows instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Running:
regsvr32 wwanprotdim.dll
does not repair a missing, corrupt, or dependency-related WWAN component and may produce another error.
wwanprotdim.dll is a Windows subsystem module, not a typical ActiveX or COM library that users manually register. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the registration requirement.

Enabling or disabling .NET Framework, legacy DirectPlay, Media Features, or other optional features is unrelated unless the error specifically identifies one of those features.
If SFC cannot repair the file
SFC may report that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them. That can happen when the component store, repair source, disk, or Windows installation has a broader problem.
- Run DISM again and record the final result.
- Confirm that Windows Update is working.
- Restart and run SFC once more.
- Review the SFC details with:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Open
sfcdetails.txtfrom the desktop and look for entries naming the unrepaired file. - Check the disk for broader symptoms such as repeated repair failures, freezes, or file corruption.
- Scan for malware if the file was deleted unexpectedly or quarantine history is involved.
Do not manually overwrite wwanprotdim.dll with a file copied from another PC. A replacement must match Windows release, architecture, servicing state, and dependencies. Manual replacement is an advanced last resort only after identifying the exact unrepaired file and obtaining a verified same-build source.
Use recovery or an in-place reinstall when repair fails
If DISM, SFC, updates, driver repair, and application repair all fail, use Windows recovery rather than a third-party DLL.
Appropriate next steps include:
- System Restore if a restore point predates the failure
- Uninstall an update if the issue began immediately after one
- Windows recovery options when startup or system components are broadly damaged
- An in-place reinstall using official Windows installation media when the installation itself needs rebuilding
An in-place reinstall can preserve personal files, settings, and applications when the correct option is selected. Read Microsoft’s recovery options and installation-media reinstall instructions before proceeding.
Windows 10 reached the end of free support on October 14, 2025. On an unsupported Windows 10 installation, recovery or migration planning may be more appropriate than repeatedly applying old component fixes.
Frequently asked questions
Is wwanprotdim.dll a virus?
No. The filename identifies a genuine Microsoft Windows WWAN component. A copy found outside the expected Windows installation or with an invalid signature still deserves investigation.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this filename alone. wwanprotdim.dll belongs to the Windows cellular subsystem, not those runtime packages.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I download the DLL and copy it into System32?
Do not do that. Download sites may provide malware, the wrong architecture, or an older build. Windows Update, DISM, and SFC are the safe repair path.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file is present?
That wording can mean a dependency of wwanprotdim.dll is missing or cannot load. The named file does not necessarily have to be absent.
Does this file need to be registered?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not the correct repair method for this Windows subsystem module.
What if I do not use cellular networking?
The error can still reflect damaged Windows files or an application loader problem. Repair the component rather than deleting the file or disabling unrelated Windows features.
