wwasum.dll is missing from your computer. The wwasum.dll file is a Microsoft Word component associated with Microsoft Office, not a general Windows system DLL.
Common versions of the message include:
- “The program can’t start because wwasum.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading wwasum.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: wwasum.dll.”
- “wwasum.dll was not found.”
- “wwasum.dll could not be located.”
The safest fix is to repair the Microsoft Office installation that is requesting the file. Do not begin by downloading a loose copy of wwasum.dll or copying it into C:WindowsSystem32.

Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches your situation:
- The error names Word or appears when opening an Office document: Repair Office first.
- The error appeared after uninstalling, migrating, or cleaning up Office: Reinstall the same Office release and its language components.
- The file was removed by Defender or another antivirus product: Check Protection History, then repair Office instead of downloading a replacement.
- The file exists in an Office folder but still will not load: Check the exact path, Office version, language, and dependencies.
- Several Windows programs also report missing system files: Run DISM and System File Checker, then retry Office repair.
- The error names an unfamiliar program: Record that executable and repair or reinstall the program making the request.
- You are using Office XP or Office 2007: Use the original disc, product key, or known-good installation source. Modern Office repair controls may not be available.
- The file is in a temporary folder, user profile, or unknown application directory: Treat it as suspicious until the requesting program and publisher are identified.
What wwasum.dll belongs to
The internal description for wwasum.dll is Microsoft Word, and public file inventories associate it with Microsoft Office XP, also known as Office 2002. Microsoft’s Office XP documentation identifies Word 2002 as part of that Office release.
#1 Best Overall
Other inventories and Office file-path reports also place the file in Office 2007 installations. That means the filename alone does not identify one universal build. The exact file can vary with the Office release, language pack, installation type, and architecture.
You may find it below a path resembling:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice121033
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice121036
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice123082
The number folders are language-resource directories. They are not Windows system folders. 1033, for example, is commonly associated with an English language resource set, while other numbers represent different languages or regional resources.
The presence of Program Files (x86) commonly points to legacy 32-bit Office, even on 64-bit Windows. Do not assume every installation has the same architecture or path. There is no single universal size, hash, language, or location that proves whether a copy is correct.

1. Record the complete error
Write down:
- The full error text.
- The executable named in the message.
- The action that triggered it.
- The path shown, if one is displayed.
- Whether the problem began after an Office update, uninstall, antivirus alert, disk cleanup, or system migration.
The executable matters. Word may be the caller, but another Office component or an old third-party program may be requesting a Word resource.
2. Search for the file
Open File Explorer and search for:
wwasum.dll
Check every result’s complete path. A legitimate-looking result should normally be inside an Office installation directory, not directly in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
C:Users<name>AppDataLocalTemp
C:Users<name>Downloads
An unexpected copy is not automatically malware, but it should not be trusted merely because the filename is familiar. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if it is present. Confirm the signer and location before considering any restore or allow action.
3. Identify the installed Office release
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, Office, or the specific Office edition.
- Note the product name and whether it is listed as Click-to-Run or an older MSI-style installation.
If you find Office XP or Office 2007, record that separately. A file from one Office generation is not a universal replacement for a file with the same name from another generation.

Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office
This is the preferred fix when wwasum.dll is absent, damaged, or part of an incomplete Office installation.
Microsoft 365 or modern Office
- Close Word, Excel, Outlook, and every other Office application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Select Online Repair.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
Online Repair replaces more of the Office installation and normally requires an internet connection. It may take longer and can reset or remove parts of the existing installation.
If Online Repair is not available, choose Quick Repair first. Quick Repair is faster and may restore a missing file, but Online Repair is the better follow-up when Quick Repair does not resolve the error.

After repair:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Word directly from the Start menu.
- Open the document or perform the action that previously caused the error.
- Check whether the same executable still reports
wwasum.dll.
If the error remains, return to Modify and run Online Repair, or uninstall and reinstall the same Office product.

MSI-based Office
Older Office editions may use the Control Panel repair path:
- Close all Office programs.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select Microsoft Office in the program list.
- Select Change.
- Choose Repair, or choose Detect and Repair if that wording is shown.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows and test Word again.
Microsoft describes these repair methods in its Office application repair instructions.
How to tell whether repair worked
Repair succeeded if:
- Word opens without the error.
- The triggering document or Office feature works.
- The file is restored under the correct Office directory.
- The error does not return after a restart.
Repair did not solve the underlying issue if the file is still missing, the installer reports that source files cannot be found, or the message changes to “specified module could not be found.” In the last case, wwasum.dll may be present while one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible.
Fix 2: Reinstall the affected Office release
Use this step when repair is unavailable, the installation is only partially present, or Office was removed during a migration.

Start the setup program and choose Repair, Detect and Repair, or a complete reinstall when offered.
Do not replace an Office XP file with an Office 2007 file simply because both are named wwasum.dll. The Office generation, language resources, and installation architecture must match the program requesting the file.
Microsoft explains the original-media requirement for installing Office 2007. Office 2007 is no longer supported, so reinstalling it may restore the application but does not provide current security support. Microsoft documents that limitation in its Office 2007 end-of-support notice.
If setup asks for missing source files:
- Cancel the repair.
- Confirm that the disc or installation folder is from the same Office edition.
- Confirm that the language pack is present.
- Retry setup from the original source.
- If the source is damaged, obtain legitimate installation media for that product rather than downloading the DLL separately.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an Office file after detecting a suspicious modification, or after a false positive.
Recommended Free Tools
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the detection related to
wwasum.dll. - Review the original path, detection name, and action taken.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore or allow it only when all of these are true:
Rank #3
- The original path is inside the expected Office installation.
- The Office product is installed and recognized.
- The file has a valid Microsoft signature where one is expected.
- A current scan does not identify the file as malicious.
- The detection appears consistent with an Office repair or known installation.
Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device. Its Protection History guidance explains how to review and manage these events.
In most cases, repairing Office is safer than restoring a quarantined file manually. The installer can supply a clean copy and restore related files and registry configuration together.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components when Windows itself is damaged
wwasum.dll is associated with Office, so SFC and DISM are not the primary repair tools. Use them when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or Office repair cannot access or replace files because the component store is corrupt.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Run the commands one at a time. Restart Windows after both commands complete, then run Office Repair again.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, save the exact message and address Windows servicing problems before repeating Office repair.
When repeated manual DISM and SFC runs leave you unsure which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problem and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but it is not required and Office Repair remains the definitive fix for an Office-owned file.
Microsoft’s DISM guidance and System File Checker documentation provide the supported command details.

Office language folders can make a repaired installation appear incomplete when the wrong language component is installed.
Check the path shown by the error and compare it with the installed Office product:
- Is the path inside the current Office directory?
- Does the language folder belong to an installed language?
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Was a language pack removed recently?
- Are remnants of an older Office release still present?
For modern Office, open Word, select File, then Account, and inspect About Word. The dialog identifies the installed product and usually shows whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
For older installations, the directory structure may be the clearest evidence. A legacy Office directory under Program Files (x86) often indicates 32-bit Office, but do not use that observation to download a replacement file. Repair the installed product so its own setup program supplies the matching architecture and language.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points, commonly self-registering COM or ActiveX components.
wwasum.dll is documented as an Office application component, not as an ActiveX control. Running:
regsvr32 wwasum.dll
is therefore unlikely to repair the problem. It may produce an error such as:
The module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not mean the file needs a different copy. It means registration is not the appropriate repair method. Microsoft explains the purpose of registration in its ActiveX controls registry information.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall a different program only if it is the caller
If the error names a program other than Word or Office, identify that program before changing Office.
- Read the executable name in the error.
- Locate that program in Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Check its publisher and installation directory.
- Use its own repair or reinstall option.
- Avoid placing
wwasum.dllinto the program’s folder unless the vendor’s installer specifically supplies it.
If the program depends on an old Office component, reinstalling that program may not be enough. Repair or reinstall the Office release it requires.
For a genuine driver-related trigger:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver, or download the driver only from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest the application.
A display, storage, or chipset driver normally does not own wwasum.dll, so Device Manager is not a first-line fix for a Word DLL error.
If manually checking hardware vendors and comparing driver versions is taking longer than expected, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its full version performs driver installation, but it is optional and reinstalling the program that actually requests wwasum.dll remains the definitive fix.
Windows Features are usually not involved
Windows Features does not normally install Microsoft Word or restore Office application files.
You can still check it when the error appears alongside an old application that explicitly requires a Windows component:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the enabled features.
- Do not enable or disable features at random.
- Change a feature only when the affected application’s documentation identifies it as a requirement.
- Restart Windows after a deliberate change.
Enabling .NET Framework or legacy components will not normally restore wwasum.dll.

- A modified or malicious payload.
- No trustworthy Microsoft signature.
- A filename that was renamed from an unrelated DLL.
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also make Windows load the wrong file for another program. It does not repair Office’s installer records, language components, registry configuration, or dependencies.
Use Microsoft Office Repair, the original Office setup media, Microsoft installation instructions, and Windows Security instead.
What to do if every repair fails
Use this escalation sequence:
- Save the exact error and executable name.
- Record every
wwasum.dllpath found on the disk. - Confirm the installed Office release and language.
- Check Defender Protection History.
- Run DISM and SFC if broader Windows corruption exists.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Office Online Repair or MSI Repair again.
- Remove the damaged Office installation if repair cannot complete.
- Reinstall from original, known-good Office media.
- Test Word before reinstalling unrelated software.
System Restore can be considered if the failure began immediately after a specific system change, but it is not the preferred first repair and cannot be assumed to restore Office correctly.
FAQ
Is wwasum.dll a Windows system file?
No evidence identifies it as a standard Windows system DLL. It is associated with Microsoft Word and Office. Restore it through Office rather than copying it into a Windows system directory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is wwasum.dll malware?
The filename belongs to a genuine Office component, but a file with that name is not automatically safe. Verify its path, publisher signature, and relationship to the installed Office product. An unexpected copy should be scanned and investigated.
Which Office versions use it?
Evidence associates it with Office XP, also called Office 2002, and with some Office 2007 installations. The exact build and language cannot be determined from the filename alone.
Should I register wwasum.dll?
No. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair tool, and this Office component is not documented here as a self-registering ActiveX or COM DLL.
Will SFC fix it?
Usually not directly. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while wwasum.dll belongs to Office. Run DISM and SFC when Windows has broader corruption, then repair Office.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat if the message says the specified module could not be found?
The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible. Repair the matching Office installation and check whether the file is in the correct Office language and architecture directory.
Can I replace an Office XP copy with an Office 2007 copy?
No. Matching the filename is not enough. Use the setup media for the same Office release and installed language components.
Does Windows 11 support Office 2007?
Windows may run parts of older Office software, but Office 2007 itself is unsupported. Repairing the file does not restore security support or modern compatibility.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the calling program, confirm the Office path, and run Office Repair. If repair is unavailable or fails, reinstall the same Office release from legitimate installation media.
