WWE 2K17 is a mixed 2016 wrestling game whose strongest appeal is its roster, customization and Universe sandbox—not a story-driven campaign. Critics praised its breadth and some combat refinements, but also faulted its slow MyCareer progression, absent Showcase mode and presentation. It may suit players who want to create wrestlers or book their own shows; it is a weaker fit if you want a guided WWE history or a clear, fast career path.
What did critics think of WWE 2K17?
Reviews were mixed rather than a clear endorsement. GameSpot gave the PS4 version 6/10 (“Fair”) on October 18, 2016. It recognized more measured combat and refinements, while finding problems both inside and outside the ring. Metacritic’s review page reflects the same divide: praise for the roster and creation tools alongside criticism of the missing Showcase, career pacing, AI and technical issues. Aggregator pages collect individual reviews and user opinions; they should not be read as proof that every player will have the same experience.

At launch on October 11, 2016, publisher 2K described the game as having the franchise’s largest WWE and NXT roster to date, with more than 135 playable Superstars. That is a launch-era publisher claim, not a count of every character available across later DLC or editions.
What does WWE 2K17 do well?
Roster and customization
The main draw is range: a substantial lineup paired with a Creation Suite for players who enjoy making and customizing wrestlers. Windows Central also praised the game’s modes and customization. If building a roster or shaping a wrestling world matters more to you than following a fixed campaign, these features are its clearest strengths.

Universe mode and sandbox booking
Universe is the more natural fit for players who want to act as a booker. You can set up shows, assign wrestlers, create rivalries and let events play out; the manual also describes promos and run-ins. Its appeal is the freedom to shape your own wrestling calendar rather than follow a single prescribed storyline.
Combat refinements
Reviewers noted more measured combat and gameplay refinements compared with the problems they associated with earlier entries. That did not make the system universally smooth: some critics still objected to AI behavior, counters and the pace of matches.

What are the main drawbacks?
No 2K Showcase campaign
WWE 2K17 does not include a 2K Showcase campaign. For players who want a guided retelling of notable WWE matches, this is a meaningful omission. GameSpot argued that the absence left MyCareer carrying more of the single-player burden and deprived the game of some personality.
MyCareer can feel slow
MyCareer follows a created Superstar through progression, upgrades, promos and popularity systems. GameSpot described its progression as tedious, while Windows Central found progress slow and opaque. Those are reviewers’ judgments, but they point to a practical fit question: this mode is less appealing if you want a quick, clearly explained route through a career.

Promos, onboarding and presentation
Interactive promos were criticized as weakly executed, and reviewers noted presentation problems. Windows Central also criticized the lack of an effective tutorial. New players who need clear instruction may have to learn systems through trial and error rather than a strong onboarding path.

When comparing it with another wrestling game, weigh whether you prefer career progression or sandbox booking, whether a historical campaign is important, how much patience you have for slower matches and rigid counters, how much guidance you need, and which console you own. The available reviews establish those decision points but do not support a full present-day comparison with newer games.
