If x3daudio1_4.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, install the official DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) and run its DXSETUP.exe. Do not download an isolated copy of x3daudio1_4.dll, copy it into a Windows folder, or try to register it with regsvr32.
What this file actually does
x3daudio1_4.dll belongs to the legacy X3DAudio API used with XAudio2. It helps older games and multimedia applications calculate positional-audio effects, including the apparent position of a sound source, listener orientation, filtering, reverb, and Doppler behavior. Microsoft documents X3DAudio as an application programming interface rather than a sound-card driver. Microsoft’s X3DAudio overview

The 1_4 part of the filename identifies a particular X3DAudio interface family. It is not automatically interchangeable with x3daudio1_3.dll, x3daudio1_5.dll, or another numbered X3DAudio file. Older DirectX components are kept side by side so that an application can use the interface it was built against. Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance

Fix 1: Install the official legacy DirectX runtime
This is the most likely fix when an older game fails on a clean Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The offline package is preferable when the web installer cannot download components, when the computer has unreliable internet access, or when you want the complete redistributable available locally. Launch the affected game or application again.
The important detail is step 9. Extracting directx_Jun2010_redist.exe does not by itself install the runtime. You must run DXSETUP.exe from the extracted folder.
Try the web installer instead
The web installer is a small downloader that retrieves the required legacy components during setup. Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer page, download dxwebsetup.exe, and run it as administrator if prompted.
If the web installer reports that it cannot download files, fails repeatedly, or stops before completing, use the offline package above. The offline package avoids the web installer’s download stage.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if the application starts without the x3daudio1_4.dll message. It may also work if the original error changes to a different missing-DLL message. That means the first dependency was restored and the application has moved farther through its startup sequence.
If another legacy DirectX filename appears, do not collect individual DLLs from separate download sources. The program may require several side-by-side DirectX components. Run the complete Microsoft runtime setup again, then repair the application installation.
Fix 2: Run the game’s own DirectX setup
Many older games include their own DirectX redistributable. This is often the best repair when the error names a file inside the game directory or appeared immediately after installing, updating, or moving the game.

Fix 3: Verify or repair the affected game
A damaged game installation can cause the same error even when the required runtime exists elsewhere on the computer. This is particularly likely after an interrupted update, a failed disk write, a partial migration, or a security product quarantine.

Not every desktop program provides this option. If it is unavailable, use the application’s own installer or uninstall and reinstall it from the legitimate publisher or store source.
If verification finds nothing
A launcher may report that all files are valid while the required DirectX runtime is still absent. File verification checks the application’s installation; it does not necessarily install every optional Windows runtime. Run the official DirectX setup separately.
Fix 4: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit architecture
Architecture mismatches are a common reason an apparently correct DLL does not solve the problem.
On 64-bit Windows:
- 64-bit system components conventionally reside in
%windir%\System32. - 32-bit system components conventionally reside in
%windir%\SysWOW64. - A 32-bit game needs the x86 version of the runtime.
- A native 64-bit game needs the x64 version.
The names are counterintuitive because Windows uses file-system redirection for 32-bit programs running on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit game can therefore use the 32-bit runtime even though the operating system itself is 64-bit. Microsoft file-system redirector documentation
Do not copy an x86 file into System32 or an x64 file into SysWOW64. Do not assume that seeing a file in one directory proves that the application can use it.
The safest way to select the correct architecture is to run the complete official DirectX installer. If the program is 32-bit, the installer provides the x86 components it needs. If it is 64-bit, it provides the corresponding x64 components.

This tells you whether Windows itself is 32-bit or 64-bit. It does not tell you whether a particular older game is 32-bit. Many older games are 32-bit and need x86 runtime components on 64-bit Windows.
Check the application architecture
If the game’s documentation does not say, do not guess by copying files. Use the official runtime installer and the game’s own redist package. If you need to investigate further, open Task Manager while the program is running. Some Windows versions identify 32-bit processes with a marker such as (32 bit) or (32-bit).
Fix 5: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software can quarantine a game-local runtime file. That does not prove the file was a false positive, so do not immediately disable protection or restore an unknown file.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are appropriate when Windows itself appears damaged, Windows Update is failing, or multiple protected system files are producing errors. They are not guaranteed to install an optional DirectX SDK runtime that was never present.
Run DISM first, then run SFC.

The legacy DirectX runtime is installed with Microsoft’s DirectX redistributable setup, not by randomly enabling a Windows feature. Installing a feature such as legacy .NET may be appropriate when an application specifically reports a .NET error, but it does not repair a missing X3DAudio component.
Fix 9: Update audio and graphics drivers only for separate symptoms
A missing x3daudio1_4.dll is usually an application-level DirectX runtime problem, not a hardware driver problem. Driver updates are still worthwhile when you also have symptoms such as:
- No audio device appears in Windows.
- Audio cuts out across several applications.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. X3DAudio is called through functions such as X3DAudioInitialize and X3DAudioCalculate; Microsoft’s X3DAudio documentation does not describe COM registration. Microsoft’s X3DAudio API reference

Why random DLL downloads are risky
Downloading a file with the right filename is not the same as restoring the correct runtime.
A standalone replacement may be:
- The wrong architecture for the application.
- Damaged or incomplete.
- A different build from the one the application expects.
- Packed with malware or unwanted software.
- Missing related DirectX components.
- Placed in a directory that the application does not search.
Manual copying can also hide the original cause, such as a failed game installation, a quarantined file, or a missing group of legacy DirectX libraries. Microsoft’s DirectX deployment guidance recommends running the DirectX setup package rather than simply copying released runtime DLLs. Microsoft DirectX deployment guidance
Use these sources instead:
- Microsoft’s official June 2010 offline redistributable.
- Microsoft’s official DirectX web installer.
- The affected game’s bundled
DXSETUP.exe. - The legitimate publisher or store installer for the application.
Do not copy a replacement into System32, SysWOW64, or the game folder unless the application publisher explicitly supplies an application-local package and documents that procedure.
When “Bad Image” appears instead of “missing”
A Bad Image message, especially one containing error status 0xc000012f, usually deserves different treatment from a simple not-found message.
Possible causes include:
- A corrupted DLL.
- A wrong architecture.
- An incomplete game update.
- A damaged application-local copy.
- Another dependency that cannot load.
- A file replaced by an incompatible package.
Use this order:
-
Record the exact error text and path.
-
Run the game’s file verification process.
-
Run its bundled
DXSETUP.exe, if available. -
Install the official June 2010 DirectX runtime.
-
Restart Windows.
-
Repair or reinstall the game if the error remains.
Do not respond to a Bad Image message by downloading a random file with the same name. Reinstalling the complete runtime and repairing the application gives Windows and the program a consistent set of components.
When the file exists but the error remains
Finding x3daudio1_4.dll in a folder does not prove that the application can load it.
The application may be:
- Loading a copy from a different directory.
- A 32-bit process using the x86 runtime while you inspected an x64 location.
- Using a damaged local copy.
- Missing another dependency.
- Reporting the filename of the first failed module rather than the underlying cause.
Start with the path shown in the error. If it names the game folder, verify or reinstall the game. If it refers to a Windows runtime location, run the complete DirectX installer instead of replacing only the visible file.

Reinstall the official DirectX runtime.
Do not assume that Windows Update normally installs this particular optional DirectX component. The timing may indicate corruption or a game-local file change, but the filename alone does not identify the cause.
When every program reports DLL errors
If the same problem appears across many unrelated applications, stop treating it as a single-game DirectX issue.
Check for:
- Multiple different missing DLL names.
- Windows Update failures.
- Recent disk or filesystem errors.
- Unexpected security alerts.
- Other signs of malware.
- Damaged Windows component files.
Run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If malware or storage failure is suspected, back up important files before making further repairs. Microsoft provides guidance for full and offline Defender scans in Virus and threat protection.
Then run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
After DISM completes:
sfc /scannow
These steps address broader Windows integrity problems, but you may still need to reinstall the DirectX runtime afterward.

Frequently asked questions
Is x3daudio1_4.dll part of DirectX 12?
It is part of the legacy X3DAudio family associated with DirectX and XAudio2. The presence of DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 in dxdiag does not guarantee that optional older DirectX SDK components are installed.
Is this a Windows audio driver?
No. It is an application-level DirectX runtime component. Audio drivers belong to the hardware and Windows driver stack. Update drivers when you have separate device or sound problems, not as the primary response to this missing-DLL message.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
No, not by itself. Visual C++ may be required if the error names a separate Visual C++ runtime file, but x3daudio1_4.dll belongs to the DirectX/X3DAudio runtime.
Will installing .NET fix it?
No. .NET is a separate application framework. Install or repair it only when the program reports a .NET-specific error.
Should I download the x86 or x64 file?
Do not download an isolated file. Install the complete official DirectX runtime so the correct components are placed for the application. A 32-bit game needs the x86 runtime even when Windows is 64-bit.
Can I copy the file into System32?
That is not the recommended repair. It may place the wrong architecture in the wrong location and leave related dependencies unresolved. Run DXSETUP.exe from Microsoft’s package or the game’s own redist folder.
Why does the game still fail after DirectX says it is installed?
The DirectX version display describes core Windows DirectX components. It does not prove that the optional legacy X3DAudio files are installed. Run the June 2010 runtime setup separately.
Should I run regsvr32 x3daudio1_4.dll?
No. This file is not repaired through COM registration. Use the DirectX installer and application repair steps.
What if the web installer fails?
Download Microsoft’s offline directx_Jun2010_redist.exe, extract it, and run DXSETUP.exe. The offline package is the appropriate fallback when the web installer cannot retrieve its files.
What if the error names a game directory?
Use the launcher’s verify or repair function first. Then run the game’s bundled Redist\DirectX\DXSETUP.exe if supplied. Reinstall the game if its local files remain damaged.
What information should I record before asking for more help?
Record:
- The complete error message.
- The error code, if shown.
- The executable path named by the error.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
