The 60-second answer
xactengine3_2.dll is a Microsoft XACT audio-engine library used by older Windows games and multimedia applications. The safest first fix is to install DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) from the Microsoft Download Center, extract the package, and run DXSETUP.exe as administrator.
This is a legacy, optional DirectX component. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include modern DirectX components, but they do not necessarily include older XACT libraries. Do not download an isolated DLL from a random website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the game folder.
What xactengine3_2.dll does
XACT was Microsoft’s audio technology for older games. A program can use it to load sound banks, play effects, and manage other game audio. The 3_2 part identifies an XACT engine generation, not Windows 3.2 or a particular Windows release.
The file is a legitimate Microsoft component when it comes from a trusted application or Microsoft runtime installer. File metadata commonly identifies the library as 32-bit version 9.24.1400.0; compatible runtime components may also exist for different application architectures.

Microsoft treats XACT as a legacy DirectX SDK technology rather than part of the modern DirectX core installed with Windows. Its continued use is mainly for compatibility with older software.
Why Windows says it is missing
The error usually has one of these causes:

The filename alone cannot identify the affected game. It is the program that loads the library, not necessarily Windows itself, that determines where the failure occurs.
Fix 1: Install Microsoft’s June 2010 DirectX runtime
This is the most likely fix for an older game or application.
- Close the affected program.
- Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) page.
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. - Open your browser’s download list and select Show in folder.
- Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license agreement.
- When the installer asks where to extract the files, choose a temporary folder such as
C:DXRedist. - Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand select Run as administrator. - Follow the installation wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game or application again.
The offline package installs legacy side-by-side libraries, including XACT. It does not replace the DirectX version built into Windows.

What success looks like
The application should launch without the xactengine3_2.dll message. The installer may not display a dramatic change in Windows because these files are compatibility components, not a new version of core DirectX.
If DXSETUP.exe reports that setup completed but the same error remains, continue with the application repair steps below. The failing program may be loading a damaged local copy, using the wrong architecture, or missing another dependency.
Fix 2: Run the game’s own DirectX setup
Many older games include the correct runtime on their installation media or in their installation directory.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the game’s installation folder.
- Look for folders named
DirectX,Redist,Support,Prerequisites, orInstallers. - Find
DXSETUP.exe. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the setup and restart Windows.
- Start the game again.
If the bundled installer fails, use Microsoft’s complete June 2010 package instead. Do not combine files from several DLL websites or manually replace individual libraries.
Fix 3: Verify or repair the affected application
If only one game fails, its installation is more likely to be damaged than Windows.
For a launcher with built-in repair tools:
- Open the launcher.
- Open your library.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or an equivalent option.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
The exact wording differs between launchers. The important action is to make the launcher compare installed files with its official copy.
If the game was installed from physical media or an older standalone installer, run its repair option from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, if available. Otherwise uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or store library.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit game needs the x86 runtime component even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit game needs the x64 component. Installing a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit game folder will not solve the problem.

To identify the application architecture:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Start the application if it opens far enough to appear.
- Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, where Windows provides that information.
You can also check the game’s documentation or executable properties, although Windows does not expose the architecture equally clearly for every program.
The June 2010 runtime is preferable to manual copying because its installer deploys the appropriate legacy components together. If you previously copied xactengine3_2.dll into the application folder, remove that manually copied file before repairing or reinstalling the application.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an old library, particularly after a game update or a change in detection rules.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
xactengine3_2.dllor the affected game. - Confirm that the original game and its installer came from a trusted source.
- If appropriate, choose Restore or Allow on device.
- Immediately verify or repair the game files.
- Run a new scan.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make a game launch. If the file has an invalid Microsoft signature, appears in an unusual writable folder, or keeps returning after removal, scan the system before restoring anything.

xactengine3_2.dll is an optional legacy runtime file, so SFC and DISM are not the first-line repair for this specific error. Use them when several unrelated Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system files appear corrupted.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after the scan. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run DISM first, restart, and then run sfc /scannow again.
Microsoft documents DISM image repair and System File Checker for these tasks.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall drivers only for a separate driver problem
A graphics or audio driver update does not normally install xactengine3_2.dll. Use Device Manager only if the application also has sound dropouts, missing devices, display errors, or a driver warning.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for display hardware under Display adapters.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that button is available. For a badly damaged device installation, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer.

System Restore is appropriate when the file disappeared after a recent installation, cleanup operation, or system change.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected applications.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
This rolls system changes back; it does not replace the need to reinstall a damaged game.
Run Microsoft Defender when the file repeatedly disappears, its signature is invalid, it appears outside a normal application or Windows runtime location, or other files are being modified unexpectedly. Check drive health as well if files are becoming corrupt across multiple applications.
Why manual DLL downloads and regsvr32 are poor fixes
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong build, or the wrong architecture. Even a genuine-looking copy may not include dependencies or the rest of the XACT runtime, so copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the game directory often leaves the real problem unresolved.
Microsoft does not provide a standalone xactengine3_2.dll download page. Use the official June 2010 DirectX package, the game’s bundled installer, or the application’s official repair process.

regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Running:
regsvr32 xactengine3_2.dll
does not restore a missing runtime and may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found. DirectX Setup handles legacy component installation; manually registering this file is not the normal solution.

FAQ
Is xactengine3_2.dll safe?
The filename belongs to a legitimate Microsoft XACT component, but any unexpected copy should be checked by its location, digital signature, and antivirus scan. A file with the correct name is not automatically trustworthy.
Is it already included in Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Not necessarily. Modern Windows includes core DirectX components, while XACT is a separate legacy runtime component. Install the June 2010 End-User Runtime when an older application requires it.

Only if the error changes to a Visual C++ runtime DLL. Visual C++ packages do not normally restore xactengine3_2.dll.
Should I install the latest DirectX version?
The current DirectX version shown by dxdiag is not the relevant package for this error. Install the legacy June 2010 End-User Runtime instead.
Why does the message say a module was not found when the DLL is present?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible component. Reinstall the runtime and verify the application rather than assuming the visible filename is the only missing file.
What if every game reports a different DirectX DLL error?
That points toward an incomplete legacy runtime installation or a broader game-library problem. Install the June 2010 runtime once, then verify each affected game.

Contact the developer after the official runtime installs successfully, the game files have been verified or reinstalled, and the same application still fails. Include the exact error text, Windows version, application architecture if known, and whether antivirus quarantine recorded the file.
