What this file actually does

xactengine3_3.dll is part of Microsoft’s legacy XACT Engine API, used by older Windows games and applications for audio-related functionality. XACT came from Microsoft’s DirectX SDK and is no longer intended for new Windows development, but older software can still depend on it.

It is not the same thing as the modern DirectX version shown by dxdiag. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can report DirectX 12 while still lacking optional, side-by-side libraries from older DirectX releases. Installing or updating DirectX 12 does not necessarily install the XACT runtime required by an older game.

Microsoft distributes the relevant legacy components in the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package. Microsoft states that this package adds legacy components and does not replace the DirectX runtime built into Windows.

Public file metadata identifies version 9.25.1476.0 for a 32-bit build. Both 32-bit and 64-bit builds are reported, so file size is not a reliable way to choose a replacement.

Error symptoms and the likely cause

The wording alone does not prove that the file was deleted. A missing dependency, incompatible architecture, or damaged copy can produce similar messages.

Fix 1: Run the game’s own repair tools first

When one game is affected, its installer is the best first repair source because it can restore the exact runtime layout expected by that game.

Verify files in the launcher

In Steam:

1. Open Steam.
2. Select Library.
3. Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
4. Select Installed Files.
5. Click Verify integrity of game files.
6. Wait for the verification to finish.
7. Start the game again.

Other launchers use names such as Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair. Use the equivalent option in that launcher.

If verification replaces files, restart the launcher and try the game again. If the same error remains, locate the game’s redistributable folder. A common path is:

The folder name varies by game. Right-click DXSETUP.exe, select Run as administrator, complete the installation, restart Windows, and test the game.

Do not reinstall the entire game yet. Verification and the bundled runtime usually require less time and avoid losing settings or saved data.

Fix 2: Install DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)

Use Microsoft’s offline redist rather than a standalone DLL download.

1. Open the official Microsoft Download Center page.
2. Download directx_Jun2010_redist.exe.
3. Save it to a folder you can find, such as Downloads.
4. Double-click the file.
5. Accept the license terms.
6. When asked for an extraction folder, enter a location such as:

C:DXRedist

1. Open C:DXRedist in File Explorer.
2. Right-click DXSETUP.exe.
3. Select Run as administrator.
4. Complete the setup wizard.
5. Restart Windows.
6. Launch the affected game or application.

Extraction is not installation. Running directx_Jun2010_redist.exe only unpacks the files; DXSETUP.exe must run afterward.

This package installs legacy DirectX libraries that can include XACT, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, D3DX components, and other older dependencies. It does not upgrade Windows to a different modern DirectX version.

Why 32-bit and 64-bit matter

A 32-bit game needs 32-bit runtime components even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing only an unrelated 64-bit runtime will not satisfy an x86 game.

The June 2010 package is safer than selecting a DLL by filename or file size because it installs the applicable legacy components through Microsoft’s setup process. Do not copy a 32-bit or 64-bit file based only on whether your Windows installation is 64-bit.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software may remove a game-installed copy, particularly when the game or installer came from an untrusted source.

1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
2. Open Windows Security.
3. Select Virus & threat protection.
4. Click Protection history.
5. Review recent detections involving the game folder or xactengine3_3.dll.
6. Open a detection to view its details.

Do not restore or allow the file automatically. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance warns that allowing a detected file can expose the computer if the detection is genuine.

If the program is from a trusted publisher and the detection is confirmed as a false positive, restore it only according to your security product’s documented process, then reinstall or verify the game so the file comes from the legitimate installer. If the source is questionable, remove the program and reinstall it from legitimate media instead.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components when multiple programs fail

DISM and SFC are appropriate when the problem affects unrelated applications, Windows files appear damaged, or the DLL is being reported from a Windows directory. They are not a guaranteed installer for optional DirectX legacy libraries, so run the June 2010 DirectX setup again afterward.

Run DISM

1. Open Start.
2. Type cmd.
3. Right-click Command Prompt.
4. Select Run as administrator.
5. Click Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
6. Enter:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Wait for it to finish.
2. Keep the window open even if progress pauses.
3. Restart Windows when the command completes.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer. Test the affected application. If the error remains, run DXSETUP.exe from the extracted June 2010 package again.

Repeating SFC and DISM without recording what changed makes diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies and automate the repair process through the full version, but reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix when its own files are damaged.

Fix 5: Reinstall the affected program

Reinstall the game or application when:

• File verification reports unrepaired files.
• Its bundled DXSETUP.exe is missing or fails.
• Antivirus removed files from its installation folder.
• The program was moved manually between drives.
• Other files besides xactengine3_3.dll are also missing.

Before uninstalling, back up saved games and configuration files if the program stores them outside cloud synchronization.

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Apps.
3. Choose Installed apps.
4. Find the affected program.
5. Select the three-dot menu.
6. Choose Uninstall.
7. Restart Windows.
8. Reinstall the program using its official installer or legitimate launcher.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL by itself

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that does not match the rest of the runtime. Manual copying can also hide the real problem, such as a damaged game installation or missing dependency.

Use Microsoft’s DirectX package or the game’s official bundled installer instead. App-local deployment can be legitimate when performed by the application’s own installer, but downloading a replacement file manually is not the normal repair path.

Do not use regsvr32

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. XACT runtime libraries are loaded by applications and are not normally registered as COM or ActiveX components.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a valid repair:

regsvr32 xactengine3_3.dll
regsvr32 /u xactengine3_3.dll

They may produce an error without fixing the application.

Do not enable random Windows Features

Windows Features does not provide a general switch for installing the XACT runtime. Enabling Legacy Components or DirectPlay is not a substitute for the June 2010 DirectX package and may not address this file.

If the Microsoft installer fails

Try these steps in order:

1. Delete or rename the extraction folder, then extract directx_Jun2010_redist.exe to a new local folder.
2. Right-click DXSETUP.exe and select Run as administrator.
3. Temporarily check whether security software blocked the installer, without disabling protection recklessly.
4. Run DISM and sfc /scannow.
5. Restart Windows.
6. Try the game’s own bundled DXSETUP.exe.
7. Review the installer log, commonly named DXSETUP.log, for the exact failure.
8. Check free disk space and the health of the drive.
9. Use System Restore only if the failure clearly began after a recent update, cleanup, or installation.

If reinstalling Windows did not resolve the issue, investigate whether a third-party backup image, security product, faulty storage device, or other restore process is putting the damaged file back.

Is xactengine3_3.dll part of Windows?
