xaudiod2_7.dll is the debug build of Microsoft’s legacy XAudio2 version 2.7 game-audio runtime. xaudiod2_7.dll is not normally installed by a clean Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, Visual C++ Redistributable, .NET, or a sound-card driver.
The correct fix depends on the exact filename, the program requesting it, and whether that program is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL from a random website.

Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record these details:
- Which game, application, sample, or executable displays the error.
- Whether the error appears at startup, after an update, after installing a mod, or after antivirus activity.
- The exact filename in the message:
XAudioD2_7.dllmeans the debug runtime.XAudio2_7.dllmeans the retail XAudio2 2.7 runtime.- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the file is absent or already exists beside the application.
- Whether the message says “missing,” “not found,” “specified module could not be found,” “procedure entry point,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
That distinction matters because installing the retail DirectX runtime does not guarantee that it will provide the debug file XAudioD2_7.dll.

- XAudio2 2.7 was the final DirectX SDK version.
- Windows 8 supplied XAudio2 2.8.
- Windows 10 supplied XAudio2 2.9.
Microsoft documents these version differences in its XAudio2 versions guide.
The D in XAudioD2_7.dll identifies the debug runtime. The 2 refers to the XAudio2 family, and 7 identifies version 2.7. A normal retail game usually requests XAudio2_7.dll, without the D.
Microsoft’s XAudio2 debugging documentation states that legacy XAudio2 debugging requires the DirectX SDK Developer Runtime. That is why a program can ask for a file that is not present on an otherwise healthy Windows installation.
Debug and retail files are different
| Filename | What it is | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
XAudioD2_7.dll |
Debug XAudio2 2.7 runtime | DirectX SDK Developer Runtime |
XAudio2_7.dll |
Retail XAudio2 2.7 runtime | DirectX End-User Runtime, June 2010 |
XAUDIO2_8.DLL |
XAudio2 2.8 Windows component | Windows 8 and related systems |
XAUDIO2_9.DLL |
XAudio2 2.9 Windows component | Windows 10 and later |
XAUDIO2_9REDIST.DLL |
Separate XAudio2 2.9 redistributable | Microsoft.XAudio2.Redist package |
The XAudio2 2.9 redistributable is not a replacement for XAudioD2_7.dll. Microsoft documents that package separately in its XAudio2 2.9 redistributable guide.
Why would a normal user encounter the debug DLL?
A consumer game normally ships as a release build and should generally request the retail XAudio2_7.dll. An exact request for XAudioD2_7.dll can indicate:
- The program is a developer build or technical sample.
- The publisher accidentally shipped a debug executable.
- The launcher selected the wrong executable.
- An unofficial patch or mod changed the executable or runtime files.
- The installation is incomplete or damaged.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The application was copied from a development machine without its required runtime.
The filename alone cannot identify the program that caused the error. If a released consumer game requests the debug filename, the publisher may need to rebuild or repackage it.
Fix 1: Repair or verify the application first
This is the safest first step when one game or application is affected. The program may have lost a bundled prerequisite or may be using the wrong executable.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset, if available. Reset can remove application data, so use it only when you are prepared to sign in again or restore settings.
Traditional desktop programs may have their own repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Choose Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
Verify a game installation
For a Steam game:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Launch the game again.
For an Epic Games installation:
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Start the game after verification completes.
For a GOG Galaxy installation:
- Open GOG Galaxy.
- Select the installed game.
- Open the game menu.
- Choose Manage installation.
- Select Verify / Repair, if shown.
- Start the game again.
Menu wording can vary between launcher versions, but the action is always a file verification or repair rather than a manual DLL download.
Reinstall from the official source
If verification reports missing or damaged files:
- Back up saves if the game stores them outside cloud synchronization.
- Remove unofficial modifications and overlays.
- Uninstall the affected application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again from the official publisher or launcher.
- Run the application before restoring mods or custom files.
If the newly installed program still requests XAudioD2_7.dll, treat that as a packaging or build problem and contact the publisher.

Fix 2: Confirm whether the program needs retail XAudio2 2.7
Look closely at the error. These names are not interchangeable:
XAudioD2_7.dllis the debug runtime.XAudio2_7.dllis the retail runtime.
If the message requests XAudio2_7.dll without the D, install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX components.
Use the official DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010):
- Download the package from Microsoft.
- Save it to a temporary folder.
- Run the downloaded executable.
- Choose an extraction folder when prompted.
- Open that folder.
- Run
DXSETUP.exeas an administrator. - Accept the license terms.
- Allow setup to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
Microsoft also provides the official DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. These packages install legacy side-by-side components without replacing the core DirectX version built into Windows.
This fix is appropriate for a missing retail XAudio2_7.dll. It should not be presented as a guaranteed source for the debug-only XAudioD2_7.dll.
Fix 3: Install the DirectX SDK Developer Runtime for a debug program
If the program is a developer sample, internal build, test executable, or older development tool that explicitly requires XAudioD2_7.dll, the relevant package is the June 2010 DirectX SDK.
Microsoft provides the legacy DirectX SDK download, whose installer is named DXSDK_Jun10.exe.
Use this route carefully:
- Confirm that the program really requests
XAudioD2_7.dll. - Confirm whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Download
DXSDK_Jun10.exefrom Microsoft. - Install the SDK only on a machine used for maintaining the older program, sample, or development environment.
- Locate the Developer Runtime folder after installation.
- Use the architecture folder matching the application.
- Launch the application from its supported development or test environment.
Microsoft documents typical runtime locations similar to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft DirectX SDK (June 2010)\Developer Runtime\x86\
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft DirectX SDK (June 2010)\Developer Runtime\x64\
The x86 folder is for a 32-bit process. The x64 folder is for a 64-bit process.
The DirectX SDK is legacy software. Do not install the full SDK merely because a retail game shows a generic DirectX error. Repair the game first, and use the SDK when the application is genuinely a debug build or a development sample.
Fix 4: Match the DLL architecture to the application
A 64-bit version of Windows does not mean every application needs a 64-bit DLL. Many games remain 32-bit processes.
On 64-bit Windows:
- 64-bit system DLLs use
%windir%\System32. - 32-bit system DLLs use
%windir%\SysWOW64. - A 32-bit application requires the x86 runtime.
- A 64-bit application requires the x64 runtime.
This naming is counterintuitive, but it is how Windows file-system redirection works. Microsoft explains the behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not guess from the operating system alone. Check the executable:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the publisher and product information.
- If the application documentation identifies its architecture, follow that information.
- If both x86 and x64 executables exist, identify which one the launcher starts.
For a game, the most reliable approach is usually to let its installer or launcher place the correct runtime. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, and do not copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the file worked previously and disappeared after a scan, Windows Security may have quarantined it.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the event associated with the application or DLL.
- Expand the event details.
- Confirm that the file came from the official application installer or trusted SDK.
- Restore or allow it only when its source and signature are trusted.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward.
Microsoft explains this process in its Protection History guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the file came from a generic DLL download sites website, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted copy, run a full security scan, and reinstall the application or official runtime from Microsoft or the software publisher.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
XAudioD2_7.dll is normally a legacy DirectX SDK debug file rather than a protected modern Windows system component. DISM and SFC therefore may not recreate it. They are still useful if multiple Windows components are failing or the system component store is damaged.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
A successful SFC result means Windows repaired or verified protected system files. It does not prove that the DirectX SDK Developer Runtime was installed. If the exact debug filename is still missing, return to the application repair or SDK steps.
If repeatedly hunting component versions and rerunning SFC/DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that program.

Windows Update will not normally supply the legacy DirectX SDK debug DLL, but keeping Windows current can resolve related system compatibility problems.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional restart is requested.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Windows Update is maintenance, not a replacement for the official DirectX End-User Runtime or SDK Developer Runtime.
Fix 8: Update audio and graphics drivers when the DLL loads but audio fails
A driver update is relevant when the program gets past the missing-DLL message but XAudio2 cannot initialize, no playback device is available, or the application crashes when starting audio. It is not the normal answer to a simple “DLL not found” message.
Update the audio driver
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows.
Update the graphics driver
Some older DirectX games fail during startup after graphics-driver changes even when the audio DLL is present.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Retest the application.
Use the graphics adapter manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows cannot find a suitable driver.
Manually identifying the correct audio and graphics packages across several devices is tedious, especially when Windows reports that a generic driver is current. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required when the application itself is mispackaged.
Fix 9: Use Windows Features only for separate legacy requirements
Some old games also require DirectPlay, but DirectPlay is separate from XAudio2 and does not install XAudioD2_7.dll.
If the game’s documentation specifically asks for DirectPlay:
Rank #2
- High-speed USB 3.0 performance of up to 150MB/s(1) [(1) Write to drive up to 15x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); varies by drive capacity. Up to 150MB/s read speed. - Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Expand Legacy Components.
- Select DirectPlay.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Launch the game again.
Do not enable random Windows features as a substitute for the correct DirectX runtime. If the error names XAudioD2_7.dll, focus on the debug runtime, application package, and architecture.
Fix 10: Try System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, antivirus event, or other system change and the correct runtime cannot be restored normally.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.
Microsoft explains that System Restore rolls back system settings, programs, and drivers while generally preserving personal files.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 XAudioD2_7.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents this behavior in its regsvr32 command reference.
An XAudio2 runtime is loaded by the application. A missing-file message does not mean the file needs manual COM registration. If DirectX setup needs to register components, its own installer handles that process.
Running the wrong version of regsvr32 can also create a second architecture error:
- The 64-bit
regsvr32.exeis in%windir%\System32. - The 32-bit
regsvr32.exeis in%windir%\SysWOW64.
That distinction does not make manual registration appropriate for XAudioD2_7.dll.
Do not copy an unverified DLL into System32
Random DLL downloads are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to the wrong release, have the wrong architecture, be corrupted, or omit another dependency. Even a clean file with the correct name may not fix the application if the program is loading incompatible files or missing a second runtime.
Use these sources instead:
- Application repair, verification, or reinstall from the official publisher.
- Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes, June 2010 for retail
XAudio2_7.dll. - Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer for supported legacy DirectX components.
- Microsoft’s June 2010 DirectX SDK for a genuine development or debug environment.
Manual copying is appropriate only for controlled developer or test deployment when the source is the official SDK or publisher package, the architecture matches the process, and application-local deployment is supported.
Microsoft describes application-local DLL handling in its DLL redirection guidance. The application folder is generally safer than replacing shared Windows files, but only when the binary is trusted and the publisher supports that arrangement.
What each error message usually means
“The program can’t start because XAudioD2_7.dll is missing from your computer”
The application cannot find the debug runtime in its application directory or expected runtime location.
First repair or reinstall the application. If it is a developer build, install the matching DirectX SDK Developer Runtime and architecture.
“This application has failed to start because XAudioD2_7.dll was not found”
This is another missing-file message. Confirm whether the program truly needs the debug file or whether the message actually names XAudio2_7.dll without the D.
Use the retail June 2010 runtime only for the retail filename. Use the SDK Developer Runtime for the debug filename.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Error loading XAudioD2_7.dll. The specified module could not be found”
This can mean either the named DLL is absent or one of its dependencies is absent. A file with the correct name can still fail to load if it is corrupt, incompatible, or built for the wrong architecture.
Do not assume that copying another DLL beside it will help. Reinstall the complete application or runtime package and use the publisher’s diagnostic logs if the problem continues.
“The procedure entry point could not be located”
The application found a DLL but the exported function it expects is not present. Common causes include a wrong release, wrong architecture, or incompatible DLL version.
Remove untrusted copies and reinstall the complete application or matching runtime. Do not replace only the named file from an unrelated source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“XAudioD2_7.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This can indicate corruption, architecture mismatch, or an incompatible binary. It does not by itself prove that the file is malware.
Check the file’s source, use the correct x86 or x64 runtime, and reinstall from the official application or Microsoft package.
If the DLL exists but the application still fails
A present file is not proof that the dependency is correct. Check these possibilities:
- The DLL is 32-bit but the process is 64-bit, or the reverse.
- The binary is corrupt.
- The application expects a different build.
- A dependency of the DLL is missing.
- The application is loading another copy first.
- The file is in an arbitrary folder that is not part of the application’s DLL search path.
- An update or mod changed the executable’s dependency list.
Windows uses defined DLL search rules, including the application directory and system directories. Microsoft describes them in its DLL search order documentation.

The safest response is to restore the entire application or runtime package rather than trying to repair a single file in place.
When to contact the software publisher
Contact the publisher when all of the following are true:
- The application is supposed to be a released consumer product.
- The executable explicitly requests
XAudioD2_7.dll. - Verification and a clean reinstall do not change the error.
- You removed unofficial modifications.
- You installed the runtime matching the application’s architecture.
- The file is absent or fails with a clean official installation.
Provide the publisher with:
- The exact error text.
- The application’s name and executable name.
- Where the application was obtained.
- Whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the error began after an update, mod, cleanup, or antivirus event.
- Whether the file is absent or present.
- File Properties details and Digital Signatures information.
- Launcher, installer, or crash logs.
The publisher may need to replace a debug executable with a release build or ship the correct runtime dependency.
FAQ
Is xaudiod2_7.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a legitimate legacy Microsoft DirectX XAudio2 2.7 debug runtime. Its legitimacy depends on where it came from. A copy supplied by the official SDK or trusted application installer is different from an unverified copy downloaded from a DLL website.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs it part of Visual C++ Redistributable?
No. XAudioD2_7.dll belongs to the legacy DirectX XAudio2 debug runtime. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable may help with a separate MSVCP or VCRUNTIME error, but it does not supply this DirectX file.
Is it part of .NET?
No. .NET is a separate application framework and does not provide XAudioD2_7.dll.
Is it a sound-card driver?
No. The file is an audio engine runtime used by the application. A sound-card driver becomes relevant when the runtime loads but cannot initialize an audio device.
Should I install the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
Match the application process, not merely the Windows installation. A 32-bit game on 64-bit Windows needs the x86 runtime. A 64-bit application needs the x64 runtime.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
Not as a first-line repair. Use the official installer or application-local deployment supported by the publisher. If a controlled developer deployment requires a system directory, 64-bit files belong in System32 and 32-bit files belong in SysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows.
Will Windows Update install it?
Ordinary Windows Update is not expected to install this legacy DirectX SDK debug file. Use application repair, the official DirectX End-User Runtime for retail XAudio2_7.dll, or the SDK Developer Runtime for XAudioD2_7.dll.
Will SFC or DISM restore it?
Usually not. They repair protected Windows components. XAudioD2_7.dll is normally supplied by the legacy DirectX SDK Developer Runtime or an application package.
Should I run regsvr32?
No. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic solution. Install or repair the complete runtime instead.
Why does a consumer game request the debug DLL?
The game may contain a development executable, a packaging mistake, an altered executable, or a damaged installation. Verify files, remove modifications, reinstall from the official source, and contact the publisher if the debug dependency remains.
Is Microsoft.XAudio2.Redist a replacement?
No. That package supplies the XAudio2 2.9 redistributable named XAUDIO2_9REDIST.DLL. It does not replace the legacy debug file XAudioD2_7.dll.
What is the safest fix?
For a normal game, repair or reinstall the game first. If the exact filename is retail XAudio2_7.dll, install the official June 2010 DirectX End-User Runtime. If the exact filename is debug XAudioD2_7.dll, use the matching DirectX SDK Developer Runtime or ask the publisher to provide a correctly packaged release build.
