Wired Xbox 360 controllers usually work in Windows 10 with the built-in Microsoft XInput driver. Connect the controller directly, run Windows Update, and verify it in Device Manager. A wireless Xbox 360 controller is different: it needs a compatible Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. It does not use ordinary Bluetooth, and a Play & Charge cable does not convert it into a wired USB gamepad.
If Windows shows a receiver as Unknown device, manually select Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows in Device Manager. That can restore compatible receivers, but it cannot make every counterfeit, damaged, or incompatible third-party receiver work.
Identify the hardware before installing anything

The controller driver and receiver driver are separate devices. A wired pad can work while a wireless receiver remains unknown, and installing software for one does not repair the other.
Install a wired Xbox 360 controller
- Disconnect the controller and restart Windows 10.
- Connect it directly to a motherboard USB port. Avoid a passive hub during initial setup.
- Wait for Windows to detect the device and complete any Windows Update driver installation.
- Press Windows key + X, then select Device Manager.
- Look for the controller under Xbox Peripherals, Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class, Human Interface Devices, or Sound, video and game controllers. The category can differ by Windows build and driver state.
- Confirm there is no yellow warning icon. If the device is missing, reconnect it to another direct USB port and use Action > Scan for hardware changes.

Install an Xbox 360 wireless receiver manually
Use this procedure when the USB receiver appears as Unknown device or has a warning icon. Microsoft community guidance describes it as a troubleshooting path, not a universal guarantee.
- Plug the receiver directly into the PC, preferably a rear motherboard USB port.
- Press Windows key + X and open Device Manager.
- Find the warning-marked device, usually under Other devices or as Unknown device.
- Right-click it and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- Choose the Xbox/XInput-related category if Windows asks for one.
- Select Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows, continue through the confirmation warning, and finish the installation.
- Restart Windows. Then press the receiver’s connect button followed by the controller’s connect button.
- Confirm that the receiver and controller LEDs settle on a quadrant, then test the controller with
joy.cpl.
The Microsoft Update Catalog lists the receiver as Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows. Its catalog entry identifies driver version 2.1.0.1011, dated August 28, 2007, with x86 and AMD64 listings: specific Microsoft Update Catalog entry. The old date reflects legacy hardware; it is not a newly released Windows 10 driver.

Use safe driver sources
- Windows Update: the preferred first attempt for a wired controller or recognized receiver.
- Microsoft Update Catalog: search Xbox 360 hardware listings and match the receiver name and architecture.
- Microsoft-hosted legacy software: use only when it is specifically relevant to the controller and still hosted by Microsoft. The Xbox 360 Accessories Software is legacy accessory software, not a modern universal driver utility; Microsoft documentation references version 1.1 at this technical document.
- Manufacturer support: appropriate only for a clearly identified, licensed third-party receiver.
Avoid generic driver-updater programs, “DLL fix” sites, repackaged EXE installers, altered INF files from unknown hosts, and downloads that ask you to disable Windows security. Claims such as “Xbox 360 controller driver crack,” “activation,” or “registry fix” are not legitimate installation methods.

- Insert fresh batteries or a charged battery pack.
- Press the receiver’s connect button.
- Within a few seconds, press the controller’s connect button.
- Wait for the quadrant LEDs to stop scrolling. The lit quadrant identifies the controller number.
This is a dedicated Xbox 360 wireless protocol, not Bluetooth pairing. Microsoft documentation lists approximately 30 feet (9.14 metres) as typical wireless range under its stated conditions: Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows technical document.
If pairing fails, replace the batteries, move the receiver away from USB 3.x devices and metal obstructions, try a rear USB port, restart the PC, disconnect other Xbox 360 controllers temporarily, and test with a second known-good controller or receiver if available.

Verify the installation with Windows Game Controllers
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select the Xbox 360 controller and choose Properties.
- On the Test tab, press A, B, X, Y, the D-pad, shoulder buttons, triggers, thumbsticks, and (where exposed) the Guide button.
A successful setup presents an Xbox 360/XInput-compatible controller with responsive axes and buttons. If Windows lists only a generic HID device, games that require XInput may not recognize it correctly.
Fix common detection and driver failures
“Unknown device” or Code 28
Code 28 generally means Windows has no usable driver assigned. Repeat the manual Browse my computer then Let me pick procedure and select Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows. If the receiver still remains unknown, inspect its hardware IDs in Properties > Details > Hardware Ids. A non-Microsoft ID can indicate a clone that the catalog package does not support.
Code 10, rollback, or “the best driver is already installed”
That message does not prove the selected driver is correct. Right-click the device, choose Uninstall device (leaving the driver-package removal option unchecked unless you know it is safe), unplug the receiver, restart Windows, and reconnect it to another direct USB port. Then repeat the manual selection. A persistent Code 10 often points to a mismatched hardware ID, damaged receiver, or incompatible firmware rather than a missing download.

The receiver works in one USB port but not another
Bypass hubs and front-panel extensions, try a rear motherboard port, and check whether the receiver’s LED powers on. USB power or signal problems can look like a driver failure.
The controller works in Windows but not in a game
- Confirm every input in
joy.cpl. - Close the game, connect the controller, and launch the game again.
- Check the title’s controller settings and player-number assignment.
- Remember that XInput is widely supported but not universal; DirectInput-only games, older emulators, and some launchers may need their own remapping.
- Temporarily disable extra remapping layers. Steam Input can translate or remap a controller, but game-specific settings can conflict with native detection.
Play & Charge cable confusion
A Play & Charge cable supplies power and charges the battery pack. It does not make an Xbox 360 wireless controller behave as a normal wired USB gamepad, so it cannot replace the receiver.
Can the Xbox Accessories app install the receiver driver?
Usually no. The modern Xbox Accessories ecosystem targets newer Xbox accessories and firmware workflows. A missing Xbox 360 receiver requires correct Windows device enumeration and the receiver driver, not a firmware update through that app.

When replacing hardware is the practical fix
Check the receiver’s hardware ID, seller description, physical condition, and ability to pair with an original controller. If a known-good controller works with another receiver but not yours, replacing the receiver may be sensible. If the receiver is a clone, intermittently disconnects, or costs nearly as much as a current controller, replacing the complete setup is often less frustrating. Do not assume a generic receiver will support original Xbox 360 wireless controllers.
A newer Xbox Wireless Controller is the current Microsoft replacement option: official product page. It uses newer connection options rather than the Xbox 360 receiver system, so verify the controller’s connection method and your PC’s Windows configuration before buying.
Windows 10 support status in 2026
Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education reached the end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025. PCs continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides normal security updates, feature updates, or technical support unless a specific extended-support arrangement applies. See Microsoft’s support notice and lifecycle page. The legacy controller driver may still function through the existing Windows driver store and catalog, but that is compatibility with old hardware, not evidence of active Xbox 360 support.
