Xbox Design Lab offers free, customizable 3D-printable Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers for the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Joystick. Pick a supported device, choose one of seven shapes, set its width and height, then download and print the file yourself or through a printing service. The file is free; printing may cost money.
What the toppers do—and what they do not do
A topper changes the physical contact surface of a compatible thumbstick. Its shape and size can give a player a different way to reach, push, pull, or grasp the stick. These are printable attachments, not electronic controllers, complete adaptive setups, or replacements for other inputs a player may need.
Xbox’s original 2024 announcement described the intended uses of several shapes: a plate for contact with a larger body part such as the chin; a dome for differing grip strengths or dexterity; a taller stick for added leverage; a pull shape that surrounds a thumb or finger; a sphere that can be grasped; and a custom shape intended for moldable material. These are design intentions, not clinical claims or guaranteed outcomes. Microsoft says it cannot guarantee the designs will work for everyone.
The current Design Lab page lists seven shapes, so the six in Xbox’s original announcement are not the complete current lineup. The May 21, 2026 update added the Goal Post shape and revised the attachment design. Xbox Wire’s May 21, 2026 announcement says the change was made to help toppers withstand higher-force use and stay in place during gameplay.

The official Xbox Design Lab Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers page provides the supported-device selector, shape and size controls, files, and printing guidance. Xbox says no controller purchase is needed to download a file; as Xbox Gaming Accessibility Lead Kaitlyn Jones put it in the May 21, 2026 announcement, “No need to buy a controller to download the file, you just need access to a 3-D printer or printing service.”

How to get and install a topper
- Open the Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers page in Xbox Design Lab.
- Select the device the topper is for.
- Choose a shape, then adjust its width and height to suit your preferred contact surface.
- Download the printable file.
- Print it at home or send it to a third-party 3D-printing service. Xbox says service and printing costs may vary.
- Attach the printed topper by following the instructions for that file. If you are using an Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, remove its existing thumbstick first.
The Design Lab page’s instructions for the selected file should take priority over general settings: print results and fitting depend on the file and printer.

Xbox recommends ABS filament and 10% infill. The company says ABS holds up to wear and helps reduce debris that could fall into the controller. It also warns that a heavier topper can make the controller less responsive.

- Orientation: Printing right-side-up can produce a cleaner top surface. Printing upside-down may improve print quality and connection, especially for Standard and Adaptive Joystick toppers.
- Supports: Xbox recommends organic or tree supports because they are easier to remove.
- Rafts and brims: Avoid them when possible. Removing them can require more post-processing, and under some Elite printing conditions can damage the base enough to prevent it from seating correctly.
For the exact orientation and support approach, check the current Design Lab guidance for your chosen file and printer. If printing at home, ABS filament is the material Xbox recommends; no specific brand is required by its guidance.

If changing the thumbstick contact point does not provide the input you need, the Xbox Adaptive Controller is a separate hub for external switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks. Xbox lists 19 3.5 mm ports and two USB 2.0 ports, and says it works with Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows 10/11 PCs. A topper may complement that setup for a compatible stick, but it does not replace external adaptive inputs.

For players considering a broader accessibility setup, compare options by the input they support, mounting requirements, remapping needs, and compatibility with the games and devices involved. Xbox’s 2024 accessibility announcement also named the 8BitDo Lite SE 2.4G Wireless Controller and ByoWave Proteus Controller as separate Designed for Xbox options; they are distinct products, not topper alternatives with the same function. That announcement does not establish their current prices or availability.
Xbox says AbleGamers Charity, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, SpecialEffect, Warfighter Engaged, and community members contributed to the Adaptive Controller’s design. That is context for the broader accessibility ecosystem, not an endorsement of every topper shape by those organizations.
