To choose a drive for future Xbox game installs, open the Xbox app, select your profile button, then choose Settings > Install Options. Under Change where this app installs games by default, select an available drive and, if needed, choose Change folder. Turn on Ask me for install options on every install if you want to pick a destination each time.
If the drive is missing or your choice will not save, work through the repair sequence below: verify the drive in File Explorer, repair or reset Xbox, use an XboxGames folder, reinstall Gaming Services, set Windows’ default app-install drive, and clear the Microsoft Store cache.

Choose a different Xbox install drive
The Xbox app treats the destination as two separate settings: a drive and a folder. Selecting a drive does not automatically select every folder on it, and changing the default affects new installations rather than games already on your PC.
- Open the Xbox app in Windows.
- Select your profile button.
- Open Settings, then Install Options.
- Under Change where this app installs games by default, select the drive you want.
- Use Change folder to choose a specific directory on that drive.
- If you want a choice for every game, enable Ask me for install options on every install.
The selector only lists drives the Xbox app currently offers. A disk appearing in File Explorer therefore does not guarantee that it will appear in Xbox.

Understand what each install setting changes
Default drive
The default-drive setting chooses the normal destination for Xbox games installed in the future. It does not add capacity, repair a damaged disk, or relocate an existing game library.
Change folder
Change folder selects the directory used on the currently selected drive. If a folder is unavailable, create a dedicated folder such as D:XboxGames and select it instead of pointing Xbox at a general-purpose directory.
Ask me for install options on every install
This option restores a destination prompt whenever you start a new installation. It is useful when you regularly switch between an internal SSD and another drive, but it does not move games that are already installed.

Confirm Windows can see the disk
Open File Explorer and verify that the target drive appears, can be opened, and has a stable drive letter. If you have just connected a USB drive, close Xbox, reconnect the drive, and restart Windows before checking Settings > Install Options again.
Check the exact Xbox page
Xbox has several settings pages with similar wording. The drive selector is under Install Options, reached through your profile button and Settings. If the selector is absent there, continue with the repair steps rather than changing unrelated privacy or account settings.

Record whether the problem is visibility or saving
- Drive not listed: Xbox is not currently offering that disk as an install destination.
- Drive listed but folder rejected: Xbox can see the disk, but the selected path is not being accepted.
- Choice disappears after saving: the Xbox, Gaming Services, Store, or Windows install-location configuration may be out of sync.
- Installation fails after selection: capture the exact error text; the available guidance does not establish one compatibility rule for every external-drive format, partition, or Windows edition.
Repair or reset the Xbox app
Windows can repair an app without deleting its local data, making this the lowest-impact software reset to try first.
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, open its menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Reopen Xbox and test Settings > Install Options.
If Repair changes nothing, return to the same page and select Reset. Resetting can clear local Xbox app data and may require you to sign in again, so note your account details before using it. After the reset, reopen Xbox and check whether the drive selector and folder control now accept your choice.
Use a dedicated XboxGames folder
A dedicated folder gives Xbox a clear, writable target and is a recommended way to configure a secondary drive.
- In File Explorer, open the target drive.
- Create a folder named
XboxGamesat the drive’s top level. - Return to Xbox and open your profile button, then Settings > General or Install Options, depending on the labels shown by your build.
- Select the target drive.
- Choose Change folder and select the new folder. For a drive with the letter D, the path is
D:XboxGames; substitute your actual drive letter. - Restart Windows after changing the setting, then test a new installation.
Do not assume that creating the folder alone makes the drive valid. It must still appear in Xbox’s available-drive selector and be selected through the app.
Reinstall Gaming Services when Xbox cannot save the location
Gaming Services is a Windows component used by Xbox and Store game installations. A Microsoft External Staff response identifies its state, along with Xbox and Store state, as a common local configuration issue. That response describes the behavior as “usually caused by a local Windows or app configuration issue.”

- Open an elevated PowerShell window only if you understand the effect of removing an app package for all users.
- Run the first command.
- Run the second command to open the Gaming Services page in Microsoft Store.
- Install Gaming Services again.
- Repair or reset Microsoft Store and Xbox if necessary, then restart Windows and test the Xbox install location.
Windows builds and Microsoft support procedures can change. If the command is rejected or the Store page does not open, use the current Microsoft instructions for your specific Windows build rather than repeatedly running administrative commands.
Set Windows’ system app-install drive
Xbox’s selector can be affected by Windows’ own default location for new apps. Setting that location does not replace the Xbox folder setting, but it gives Windows a consistent preferred drive.
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.
- Set New apps will save to to the drive you want to use.
- Apply the change.
- Restart Windows, then reopen Xbox and check Settings > Install Options.
This is a system-wide preference, so it can influence other Microsoft Store app installations as well as Xbox-related installs. It does not move existing games.
Clear the Microsoft Store cache
A damaged Store cache can prevent Store-linked components from registering a new location correctly.

When an external SSD is appropriate
A portable external SSD can provide additional capacity when the internal drives do not have enough free space or no suitable internal destination is available. It is optional: if an internal drive already appears in Xbox and has sufficient capacity, buying another drive is not required to fix the configuration.
External-drive compatibility and performance can vary with the connection, partition, format, and Windows configuration. The available guidance does not provide a definitive compatibility matrix for every external disk. Treat an SSD as storage capacity, not as a guaranteed software fix for a missing Xbox selector.
Common mistakes and recovery paths
Expecting the new location to move installed games
The install-location controls apply to future installations. To change where an existing game lives, use the game’s own available move or storage-management option if Xbox offers one for that title; changing the default folder alone will not relocate its files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSelecting a broad or protected folder
If Xbox rejects a manually chosen directory, create the top-level XboxGames folder on the target drive and select that folder. Avoid assuming that any folder visible in File Explorer is a valid Xbox library path.

Changing only Xbox while Windows points elsewhere
If the Xbox selection will not persist, set New apps will save to under Windows’ storage settings, apply it, and restart. The Xbox setting and Windows setting serve different scopes and may both need to agree.
Running repair steps without noting the result
Test the selector after each major change. This identifies whether Repair, Reset, Gaming Services reinstall, the Windows storage setting, or Store cache reset made a difference and prevents unnecessary destructive resets.
When the drive still does not appear
After completing the sequence, retry the Xbox app and capture the exact wording of any error. Include the Windows version, Xbox app version, whether the drive is internal or external, its drive letter, and whether File Explorer can read and write to it. Also note which steps you completed and whether a reboot changed the selector.
There is no established universal rule in the available Microsoft guidance covering every external-drive format, partition layout, or Windows edition. If the disk is visible and usable in Windows but never offered by Xbox after the app, Gaming Services, Store, and system-location checks, use current Microsoft support for your build with that diagnostic information.
