If the Xbox app is not opening, a Game Pass game will not install, or your subscription is missing, first identify which step fails. Those symptoms can come from the app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, account eligibility, a specific game, or cloud streaming; they do not by themselves establish a widespread Xbox outage. Check Xbox status for a live incident, then follow the matching branch below.
Identify what is actually failing
Microsoft describes the Xbox PC app as a hub for discovering, installing, launching, and managing games, plus accessing profiles, friends, achievements, and Game Pass. A failure anywhere in that chain can be described as “the Xbox app is broken,” but the remedies differ. Microsoft Q&A users have reported symptoms such as loading indefinitely or crashing without a window; those are individual reports, not proof of a general defect.
- The app will not open: determine whether it fails to start at all or opens and then hangs.
- A game will not install or update: check whether the problem is in Microsoft Store or in the Xbox app’s game installation flow.
- A game will not launch: note whether it affects one game or several, and record any error code.
- Game Pass is not recognized: verify the account, subscription plan, and whether that title is currently included and available to you.
- Cloud play will not start: check plan, game, device, and regional support separately from local installation.
Write down the exact error, Windows version, and point of failure. Also note whether other Microsoft Store apps install or update normally. Check the Xbox status page before spending time on local repairs. The available status information does not establish a current broad outage, so treat an incident as confirmed only if the live page reports one.
If Microsoft Store cannot install or show the app
Store availability and installation problems are not necessarily Xbox app process failures. Microsoft recommends resetting the Store cache with wsreset.exe and checking common availability blockers. The reset is a Store-specific step; it is not proof that the Xbox app itself is healthy.

- Press Windows key + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and press Enter. Let the reset finish and check the Store again. - Confirm that Windows has completed any pending updates; restart the PC if an update requires it.
- Check that the app is available in your country or region, your device is compatible, and family settings do not restrict access.
- Make sure Microsoft Store is authorized with the Microsoft account you intend to use. Consider whether the app may have been removed from availability.
- If the issue persists, record what you tried and contact Microsoft Support.
If a Game Pass game reports a Gaming Services error
Microsoft documents a Gaming Services workaround for a specific Windows 10 error context: 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F when installing or starting a Game Pass game. Its procedure removes Gaming Services packages and service entries, restarts Windows, and reinstalls Gaming Services through the Xbox app. Because it uses administrator-level PowerShell and is tied to named errors in a legacy Windows 10 support article, do not apply it as a general fix for every Xbox app problem.
Use Microsoft’s Gaming Services instructions only when the error and circumstances match. Follow the current steps on that page precisely rather than removing services or registry entries by guesswork.

If the app opens but Game Pass access is missing
Check that the Xbox app and Store are using the Microsoft account associated with the subscription, then confirm the plan and the game’s current availability. Microsoft’s May 20, 2026 overview describes Ultimate and PC Game Pass as providing access to hundreds of games, along with EA Play access and selected benefits; it does not give a fixed catalog count. Choose between downloading and cloud streaming
Game Pass play may mean downloading a game to the PC or streaming a supported game. These paths have different requirements and failure points.

If installation works but streaming does not, investigate cloud eligibility and connectivity rather than assuming the whole Xbox app is broken. Conversely, a cloud-play issue does not explain a Store download failure.

If the relevant Store checks or the matching Gaming Services guidance do not resolve the failure, contact Microsoft Support with the exact error, Windows build, affected game or app step, whether other Store apps work, and the remediation already attempted. This makes it easier to distinguish an account or eligibility question from a Windows service, Store, or app issue. No single reset or reinstall is established as a universal cure for Xbox app launch failures.
