Microsoft’s older internal roadmap reportedly targeted a late-2024 release, but the actual 2024 Xbox Series X refreshes released on October 15, 2024 in the United States and other initial markets. The closest match is the Xbox Series X 1TB Digital Edition—not a cylindrical 2TB console called Brooklin.
Brooklin did not receive an official release date
Project Brooklin was never released as the leaked Xbox Series X console. Microsoft’s internal 2022 roadmap reportedly described a cylindrical, all-digital Series X refresh with 2TB of storage for late 2024—often reported as an October or November target—but that was a proposed plan, not a confirmed retail launch. The documents were disclosed during the FTC v. Microsoft litigation and did not establish that Microsoft would ship the product unchanged.

The real 2024 Xbox Series X refreshes launched on October 15, 2024 in the United States and other initial markets, with select countries following on October 29, 2024. Xbox officially announced those products as a 1TB all-digital white Series X and a 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition, not as “Brooklin.”
What was Project Brooklin?
Brooklin was the codename attached to a proposed Xbox Series X refresh in internal Microsoft planning material dated April 2022. Based on reporting about those documents, the concept was intended to include:
#1 Best Overall
- What's in the box: Xbox Series X console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller - Carbon Black, Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, Power cord.
- Equipped with AMD's Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures, DirectX ray tracing delivers true-to-life lighting, shadows and accurate reflections to create dynamic, living worlds.
- Memory: 16GB GDDR6 w/320 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 10 GB @ 560 GB/s, 6 GB @ 336 GB/s; Internal Storage: 1TB Custom NVME SSD
- Gaming Resolution: True 4K; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; High Dynamic Range: Up to 8K HDR; Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-Ray; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
- Bundled with HDMI_Cable
- An all-digital design with no disc drive
- A cylindrical form factor instead of the existing tower-style Series X design
- 2TB of internal storage
- Lower power consumption
- Faster wireless connectivity
- A redesigned Xbox controller concept
- A planned launch during late 2024
Those details should be treated as historical roadmap information, not final specifications. Internal product plans can change, and Microsoft never announced a retail console branded Project Brooklin or confirmed a Brooklin launch date.
When did the actual 2024 Xbox Series X refresh release?
Microsoft announced its official 2024 console lineup on June 9, 2024. The company later confirmed that the new models would launch on October 15, 2024, with availability in select additional countries beginning October 29. Xbox’s announcement covered three new console options:
| Console | Release status | Key details |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S 1TB | Officially released October 15, 2024 | Robot White finish; all-digital Series S |
| Xbox Series X 1TB Digital Edition | Officially released October 15, 2024 | Robot White finish; all-digital; 1TB storage |
| Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition | Officially released October 15, 2024 | Galaxy Black finish; 2TB storage; includes a disc drive |
Xbox’s June 2024 announcement introduced the models, while its August 21 pre-order announcement supplied the October release dates. Availability and exact launch timing varied by country, so October 15 should be understood as the date for the United States and other specified launch markets—not a universal worldwide date.
Which official console is closest to Brooklin?
The Xbox Series X 1TB Digital Edition is the closest released counterpart because it is an all-digital Series X. However, it is not the leaked Brooklin console. It has 1TB of storage, uses the conventional Series X form factor, and comes in Robot White rather than the reported cylindrical design.
Buyers who want the actual all-digital 2024 model should look for the Xbox Series X Digital Edition, not a product advertised as Brooklin. The name “Brooklin” refers to the leaked project codename and should not be used as evidence that a particular retailer has a separate 2TB cylindrical console in stock.

How the released models differ from the leaked Brooklin plan
| Feature | Leaked Brooklin plan | Released 1TB Digital Edition | Released 2TB Galaxy Black Edition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release status | Proposed; never confirmed as released | Official retail product | Official retail product |
| Disc drive | None planned | None | Included |
| Storage | 2TB reported | 1TB | 2TB |
| Design | Cylindrical design reported in leaked material | Conventional Series X form factor; Robot White | Conventional Series X form factor; Galaxy Black |
| Target or launch date | Late 2024 target in an older roadmap | October 15, 2024 in initial markets | October 15, 2024 in initial markets |
The official Xbox Series X product listing confirms the distinction: Microsoft lists a 1TB Digital Edition, a 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition, and the conventional 1TB disc-equipped Series X. No listed product matches all of Brooklin’s reported characteristics. The most reasonable conclusion is that Microsoft changed, divided, or abandoned the original plan rather than launching Brooklin exactly as described.
Which 2024 Series X should you buy?
Choose the 1TB Digital Edition if you want an all-digital console
This is the closest real alternative to the leaked concept. It is appropriate if you buy games digitally or use Xbox Game Pass and do not need to play physical Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, or Blu-ray discs. Its important limitation is capacity: 1TB is smaller than the 2TB storage reported for Brooklin, and usable space is lower after the operating system and reserved data.
Because it has no optical drive, physical games cannot be added later through an accessory. If your library grows beyond the available internal storage, consider an Xbox Series X storage expansion card. Xbox identifies the Seagate Storage Expansion Card as compatible with the Series X|S family. External USB storage can also be useful for storing games, but current-generation games generally need to be played from the console’s internal SSD or an officially supported expansion card.
Choose the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition if storage matters most
This is the confirmed 2TB Series X option, but it is not an all-digital Brooklin replacement. It includes a disc drive and uses a Galaxy Black finish. It makes more sense for players with large game libraries, households sharing one console, or anyone who wants the flexibility to use physical games and discs.
In short: the 1TB Digital Edition matches Brooklin’s reported no-disc direction, while the 2TB Galaxy Black model matches its reported capacity. Neither matches the leaked concept in full.

Choose the standard 1TB Series X if you want the established disc-equipped design
The existing 1TB Carbon Black Series X remains the conventional option: it has the familiar Series X form factor, an optical drive, and 1TB of internal storage. It may be preferable when physical games, used discs, backward-compatible disc purchases, or 4K Blu-ray playback are important.

Accessories for the real Series X models
The 2024 consoles are not Brooklin-specific products, so accessories should be chosen for the actual Xbox Series X|S model you own. An additional Xbox Wireless Controller is useful for local multiplayer or as a replacement. Microsoft also promotes the Xbox rechargeable battery with USB-C charging for compatible Xbox controllers, which avoids regularly replacing disposable AA batteries.
For games that exceed the console’s internal capacity, an Xbox Series X storage expansion card is the most relevant dedicated storage accessory. Check the exact capacity, console compatibility, retailer availability, and current pricing before buying; accessory stock and regional product listings can change.

There is no official Brooklin release date because the leaked Brooklin console did not launch as a named retail product. Its reported late-2024 target was an older Microsoft plan. The actual 2024 Xbox Series X refreshes—the 1TB Digital Edition and 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition—released on October 15, 2024 in the United States and other initial markets, followed by October 29 launches in select countries. The 1TB Digital Edition is the closest available alternative, but it is not the leaked 2TB cylindrical Brooklin console.
