The Xbox DHCP error means the console did not receive a usable local IP address from your network. Start by restarting the modem, router, and Xbox in that order, then determine whether the failure affects only the Xbox or every device. That distinction tells you whether to investigate the console, an Ethernet path, or the router’s DHCP service.
What “can’t connect to the DHCP server” means
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It automatically supplies a device with an IP address, subnet information, gateway, and usually DNS settings. Your Xbox needs those values before it can communicate on your home network or reach Xbox services.

In a normal exchange, the console broadcasts a Discover message, the router’s DHCP service sends an Offer, the console makes a Request, and the router returns an Acknowledgement. If any stage fails, the Xbox cannot complete local network setup.
A Microsoft Community moderator describes the arrangement this way: “The DHCP server is part of your router. It assigns different devices on your home network with unique IP addresses.” Another moderator explains that a DHCP error occurs when the server cannot assign an address to the console, or when the console cannot obtain or keep the lease. The message therefore does not automatically mean Xbox Live is down; it points first to the connection between your console and the local router.

Identify the failure before changing settings
Use these comparisons before attempting a static address or replacing equipment. They show where the fault follows.
| Check | What you observe | Most likely area |
|---|---|---|
| Other devices on the same network | Phones and computers also fail to get online or show no local address | Router DHCP service, address pool, firmware, or the internet connection |
| Only the Xbox fails | Other devices connect normally | Xbox network settings, a saved configuration, a cable, or one router port |
| Wired versus Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi works but Ethernet fails | Ethernet cable, LAN port, console socket, or the router’s LAN switch |
| Different Ethernet path | The Xbox works with another cable or port | The original cable or port |
| Failure after every reboot | Restarting restores service only briefly | Recurring DHCP exhaustion, a conflict, unstable router software, or failing hardware |
DHCP troubleshooting is a client-to-server investigation: check the Xbox, the physical path, and the router rather than repeatedly restarting one device.
Fix the Xbox DHCP error in order
1. Restart the complete network path once
- Turn off the Xbox.
- Power off the modem and router. If you have one combined gateway, turn off that single unit.
- Start the modem first and wait until its normal connection indicators settle.
- Start the router and wait for its Wi-Fi or LAN service to return.
- Turn on the Xbox and run the network test again from Settings > General > Network settings.
This sequence lets the modem establish its upstream connection before the router begins issuing local addresses. If the DHCP message returns, do not keep repeating the same reboot; continue with the checks below.

For a wired Xbox, remove and firmly reconnect the Ethernet cable at both the console and router. The router end must be in a numbered LAN or Ethernet socket, not the socket labeled Internet or WAN. A cable in the WAN port connects the wrong network segment and can prevent the Xbox from reaching the router’s DHCP service.

Look for link lights on the router, if your model provides them. No light after reseating suggests a cable, port, or physical socket problem rather than an address-setting problem.
3. Check whether the problem is local to the Xbox
Connect a phone or computer to the same router, preferably using the same Wi-Fi band or LAN area. If that device receives an address and browses normally, focus on the Xbox and its immediate path. If several devices cannot obtain addresses, skip console-specific changes and inspect the router’s DHCP function.
Testing another console, laptop, or streaming device can make the comparison stronger. A single-device failure points toward that client; a simultaneous failure across devices points toward the shared router or its address pool.

Automatic mode is the correct baseline for a normal home router. After applying it, run Test network connection. Record the current IP information shown on the Advanced settings screen before changing anything else; it can help identify whether the console has a valid local address or an unusable one.
5. Try another cable and router LAN port
If the connection is wired, substitute a known-good Cat6 Ethernet cable as a diagnostic. Move the cable to a different numbered LAN port on the router. Test the Xbox again after each change so you know which change affected the result.
If Wi-Fi succeeds while Ethernet still fails, the router’s DHCP service is probably responding, and the fault is more likely the original cable, the selected LAN port, the Xbox Ethernet socket, or the router’s LAN switch. If both Wi-Fi and wired connections fail while other devices work, return to the Xbox settings and then investigate address conflicts.
6. Resolve address conflicts with a reservation or documented static address
A duplicate IP address can stop the console from using a lease even though the router appears to be operating. Microsoft Community guidance identifies this conflict as one possible cause and suggests either a router-side reservation or a static address.

A reservation is usually safer: in the router’s client or DHCP section, bind the Xbox’s network hardware address to one unused IP inside the router’s documented subnet. The router then gives that same address to the Xbox while continuing to manage the rest of the network.
Use a manual static address only when you understand the router’s subnet, gateway, and DNS values. Choose an address outside the active DHCP pool, or follow the router manual’s documented method for excluding an address from the pool. Never copy an address already assigned to another device. A wrong subnet or gateway can replace the DHCP error with a different loss of connectivity.
7. Inspect the router when multiple devices fail
Open the router’s administration interface and verify that its DHCP server is enabled and that its address pool still has free entries. Remove obsolete reservations or duplicate entries if the interface shows them. The exact menu names differ by router, so use that model’s manual rather than guessing at values.
Install router firmware only through the manufacturer’s documented update process. Keep the router powered during the update and do not interrupt it. If the DHCP service remains unreliable after the firmware procedure, contact your internet service provider; the provider may need to check the gateway, replace a faulty unit, or correct a service-side configuration.

Wired and Wi-Fi tests tell different stories
| Result | Next action |
|---|---|
| Wi-Fi connects; wired connection reports DHCP failure | Replace the Ethernet cable, try another LAN port, and inspect the Xbox socket and router LAN switch. |
| Wired connects; Wi-Fi reports DHCP failure | Check the wireless network selected on Xbox, then inspect the router’s wireless service and DHCP response for that band. |
| Both Xbox paths fail; other devices work | Set IP configuration to Automatic, check the Xbox’s displayed IP, and investigate a conflict or console-side network fault. |
| Both Xbox paths and several other devices fail | Concentrate on router DHCP settings, the available address pool, firmware, and ISP support. |
Why restarting the router may fix it only temporarily
A restart clears the router’s active state and can make its DHCP process answer again, which explains the short-term improvement. It does not correct an exhausted address pool, a duplicate reservation, unstable firmware, or hardware that is beginning to fail. If the same message returns after normal use, note whether other devices lose connectivity at the same time and whether the Xbox is wired or wireless. That pattern is more useful than another reboot because it identifies the failing layer.
A recurring one-device failure can indicate a saved Xbox configuration or a conflict involving that console’s address. A recurring whole-network failure indicates that the router’s DHCP service needs maintenance, a firmware update, ISP assistance, or replacement.
When replacement is justified
Do not replace a router solely because one Xbox displays a DHCP message. First verify the cable and port, test another device, restore automatic IP settings, and inspect DHCP availability. Replacement becomes reasonable when multiple devices repeatedly lose leases, the router cannot keep its DHCP service enabled, firmware maintenance does not stabilize it, or the ISP confirms failing hardware.

For an isolated wired failure, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is the direct, low-risk replacement test. For a whole-network failure, a home router with a functioning DHCP service is the relevant replacement category; configure it according to the ISP’s requirements before reconnecting the Xbox.
A practical decision checklist
- Restart modem, router, and Xbox in that order once.
- Confirm an Ethernet cable is in a LAN port, not the WAN or Internet port.
- Test whether phones, computers, or another console receive local addresses.
- Set Xbox IP configuration to Automatic under Network settings and Advanced settings.
- For wired use, test a known-good Cat6 cable and another LAN port.
- If only the Xbox fails, check for duplicate addresses and use a router reservation when appropriate.
- If several devices fail, inspect DHCP enablement, pool capacity, firmware, and ISP service.
- Replace hardware only when repeated evidence points to a persistent router, LAN, or cable fault.
The useful question is not simply whether the Xbox says “DHCP.” It is whether the failure follows the console, the Ethernet path, or every client sharing the router. That comparison determines the next repair without risking unnecessary manual network settings.
