Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has described Gen-10 as a “family of devices” with “a great console first,” while also acknowledging players who are “on the go.” That signals console-first planning alongside portable play—but it is not an announcement of a new Xbox handheld. Project Helix is confirmed as Xbox’s next-generation first-party console, designed for Xbox console and PC games; no dedicated Helix handheld, consumer release date, or price has been announced in the cited statements.
What Xbox has actually announced about Project Helix
At the Game Developers Conference on March 11, 2026, Jason Ronald, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation, described Project Helix as the company’s next-generation first-party console. Xbox says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Ronald wrote that Helix is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games,” describing “leading performance” as the company’s product goal, not as an independently measured result.
The announcement identifies a custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC), co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). Xbox says it is targeting improved ray-tracing performance and capability. These are directional design details, not a complete consumer specification sheet: the announcement does not establish final hardware specifications, measured performance, supported PC storefronts, or the precise boundaries of game compatibility.
Why Sharma’s comments point to a console-first device family
In remarks reported by GamesRadar+ on October 6, 2026, from a town-hall transcript shared by Windows Central, Sharma said: “We are moving to a family of devices for Gen-10. There is not one device that fits all. We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go.” She added that Xbox would make some things itself and partner on others, and said the operating system was starting to look good.

The wording puts a console at the front of Xbox’s Gen-10 framing while recognizing portable play as part of its plans. It does not explicitly say “handheld,” name a portable product or partner, or say when any additional device might arrive. A dedicated next-generation Xbox handheld is therefore a possible interpretation of “players will be on the go,” not a confirmed Project Helix product.
What “on the go” means for Xbox handheld play today
There is already a relevant current example, but it should not be confused with a Helix announcement. Microsoft says Xbox mode debuted on ASUS ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. In March 2026, it also said the full-screen, controller-optimized Xbox interface would begin rolling out to Windows 11 in select markets in April 2026, while retaining Windows flexibility. That describes Xbox’s current work to extend its experience across screens; it does not establish the ROG Xbox Ally as a Helix device or as the future handheld in the Gen-10 family.

Xbox’s stated direction for Helix is play across Xbox console and PC games. The cited announcement does not specify which PC stores will be available, whether all PC games will work, or how game access will be presented. In particular, it does not confirm support for Steam or any other named third-party storefront.
When will Project Helix come out?
Ronald said Xbox plans to ship alpha versions of Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a developer hardware milestone, not a promised retail launch year. The cited announcement and reporting do not give a consumer release date or window.

The GDC announcement also says Xbox is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable “for years to come.” It does not list specific backward-compatibility guarantees for Helix, so that broad commitment should not be read as a complete compatibility list for the new system.

In a June 10, 2026 Xbox update, company leadership said console storage component prices were more than twice their level the prior fall, when Sharma joined as CEO in February, and had since doubled again; it also anticipated another significant increase for the 2027 holiday season. The update said memory costs were following a broadly similar trajectory and that Xbox could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy. Those were company-reported conditions at the time, not a Project Helix price estimate or supply forecast.

Consequently, the available statements establish neither a Helix price nor how many units Xbox expects to produce. They also do not establish the price, timing, or availability of any possible portable Gen-10 device.
