Microsoft has confirmed that Project Helix is its next-generation first-party Xbox console, designed to play Xbox console and PC games. CEO Asha Sharma has also been quoted in reporting describing a “family of devices” for Helix—but Microsoft has not publicly identified multiple products or confirmed a lineup. Developer alpha hardware is planned to begin shipping in 2027; that is not a consumer release date.
What is Project Helix?
Microsoft calls Project Helix its next-generation first-party Xbox console. At the March 11, 2026 announcement, Jason Ronald, Xbox vice president of next generation, said it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Microsoft has not yet specified which PC game stores or titles will be supported, or published a final compatibility list. Xbox Wire’s announcement is the primary source for the stated purpose and plans.
Is Helix one console or several devices?
The confirmed product is a next-generation console. A broader device family has been suggested, but not detailed: GamesRadar reported in August 2026 that Sharma described “a great family of devices for Project Helix” in a BBC interview. The report said there was no official word on what that family would include. Microsoft has not announced particular Helix models, prices, specifications, or a hardware partner device in the sources available here. GamesRadar’s report is secondary coverage, not a product-line announcement.
So the title’s “several devices” idea should be treated as a reported strategic direction, not a confirmed list of products. It would be premature to assume that Helix means a premium and budget console, a handheld, or third-party PC-style devices.

What has Microsoft said about Helix hardware?
Microsoft says Helix will use a custom AMD system-on-a-chip and is being co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). The company describes a major step in ray-tracing capability and performance, alongside efficiency gains. It has not published retail specifications or independent benchmark results, so these descriptions do not establish how Helix will compare with specific PC hardware or other consoles.
When is the next Xbox coming out?
Microsoft said it plans to ship alpha versions of Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Alpha hardware is intended for development; it does not confirm when consumers can buy a console. The announcement does not establish a retail launch date or price. Microsoft’s announcement is the source for the developer timing.

How does Helix fit into Microsoft’s wider Xbox strategy?
Games across screens
Microsoft has described a goal of making the Xbox experience more consistent across screens. In March 2026, it said Xbox mode for Windows 11 would begin rolling out in select markets in April, offering a full-screen, controller-optimized experience. That Windows feature supports the broader cross-screen direction, but Microsoft has not said it is a Helix device or confirmed a particular Helix-to-Windows product arrangement. Xbox said on March 11, 2026, that more than 1,500 games were in the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog and 500 development teams were shipping games with Play Anywhere. Those are company-reported figures about that program, not a count of Helix-compatible PC games.

Backwards compatibility
Microsoft says it is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come. The statement does not list every covered game or guarantee that every title will work on Helix. Until Microsoft publishes a title-level compatibility list, the commitment should not be read as confirmation for any particular game.
Hardware supply, costs, and partnerships
In an employee message published June 10, 2026, Sharma and Matt said Xbox could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy and needed a new business model and hardware partnerships while remaining committed to Helix. They cited component-cost inflation and expected further significant increases as they planned for the 2027 holiday season. These were company-reported conditions at that time; they do not establish Helix’s price, supply level, or launch schedule. The Xbox Wire message is the source for those statements.

The same message said Xbox storage-component costs had more than doubled compared with the prior fall, then doubled again, and that the company expected to pay more than five times the price it had paid two years earlier by its 2027 holiday planning period. These time-relative company figures describe component costs, not retail console prices. Xbox also reported more than $20 billion spent over five years on content, platform, and hardware subsidy, while annual revenue declined by nearly half a billion dollars over that period, excluding Activision Blizzard King. The message reported more than 1 billion players per year and 72 billion hours across console, PC, mobile, and streaming, with exclusions noted by the company.

- Consumer release timing and retail price.
- Final technical specifications and independent performance results.
- Which PC storefronts, PC games, or individual Xbox games will be supported.
- Whether existing accessories will work with Helix.
Microsoft’s statements about controller-optimized Xbox mode on Windows do not confirm that any particular controller is compatible with Helix. Likewise, the mention of hardware partnerships does not name a partner or confirm a partner-made device.
