If your TV has a currently supported Xbox app, using it is usually the simpler choice: there is no additional streaming hardware to buy or configure. If it does not, a specifically supported Amazon Fire TV Stick or Fire TV Cube can add an Xbox Cloud Gaming route through HDMI. Neither option has a proven universal advantage in speed or picture quality, so choose by exact device support, what you already own, and your setup needs.
What’s the difference?
With the TV-app route, you launch Xbox Cloud Gaming on a compatible smart TV. With the streaming-device route, you connect a supported Fire TV device to the TV’s HDMI port and use the Xbox app there. In both cases, games are streamed over the internet rather than run locally on the TV or streamer.
The choice is therefore mainly about compatibility and convenience—not a demonstrated performance gap. Microsoft says streaming performance can depend on your internet connection, location, device, and other factors. The available sources do not establish that a native TV app or a Fire TV device is consistently faster, sharper, or more reliable.
Which devices are supported?
Smart TVs
Xbox lists supported smart-TV platforms and selected models on its TV compatibility page. The page directs Samsung users to Gaming Hub and identifies supported LG and VIDAA devices. Xbox’s 2026 announcement says the app has rolled out to supported VIDAA OS TVs, including selected Hisense models running VIDAA OS 9.6 or later. Brand alone is not enough: check your exact model, software version, region, and app availability before relying on the TV route.

Fire TV devices
Xbox’s listed Fire TV options are specific generations: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st and 2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen), and Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen). This is not blanket support for every Fire TV product. Confirm the model against Xbox’s current compatibility list before buying; a similar product name or newer-looking model is not proof of compatibility.
Older Samsung TVs need an extra check
Windows Central has reported that Xbox app support on 2020 Samsung smart TVs is due to end on November 3, 2026, while newer Samsung TVs continue to be supported. Xbox’s compatibility page has also been described as listing select 2020-and-newer Samsung devices, so the two statements do not fully align. If you own a 2020 Samsung TV, verify its live status in Samsung Gaming Hub and with Xbox rather than assuming it will remain supported: Windows Central’s report.

What you need for either setup
- A compatible device: Check the exact TV or Fire TV generation and applicable software requirements.
- A compatible controller: A controller is required. Xbox’s LG app announcement names Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, PlayStation DualSense, and DualShock 4 as examples. That list is not a guarantee that each controller works with every TV or Fire TV device, or through every connection method; check the current guidance for your specific platform. See Xbox’s LG app announcement.
- Cloud-gaming eligibility: Xbox says cloud gaming is included with most Game Pass plans, but the eligible plan, game catalog, and any playtime limits can vary by country, plan, device, and time. Check the current terms for your region before subscribing. See Xbox’s getting-started guide and its VIDAA announcement.
- A suitable internet connection: Streaming quality depends partly on your connection and location, as well as the device and other factors. The sources do not provide a minimum-speed comparison that would make one of these two routes the clear choice.
TV app vs. Fire TV: how to choose
| Factor | Supported TV app | Supported Fire TV device |
|---|---|---|
| Extra hardware | No added streamer if you already own a supported TV. | Requires a listed Fire TV Stick or Cube if you do not already own one. |
| Compatibility check | Exact TV model, software, region, and app availability matter. | Exact Fire TV generation matters; not every Fire TV model is listed. |
| Controller | A compatible controller is required; verify support for the TV. | A compatible controller is required; verify support for the Fire TV device. |
| Setup | Fewer components when the app is available on the TV. | Connect the device to HDMI and set it up; useful when the TV lacks a usable Xbox app. |
| Performance | No universal advantage established. | No universal advantage established. |
Which option is better for you?
Choose the TV app if it is supported and ready to use
If your exact TV model is currently supported and you already have a compatible controller, the native app is the straightforward option. It avoids adding another device and its setup.
Choose a supported Fire TV device if the TV lacks the app
A compatible Fire TV Stick or Cube can provide the app on an HDMI-equipped TV that has no usable Xbox app. Check the exact generation first, then compare the added hardware cost—and the cost of a controller if you need one—with what you already own. Subscription costs are separate and depend on current regional terms.

Do not buy one expecting a guaranteed performance upgrade
The available evidence does not show that either route always reduces latency or improves image quality. Your connection, location, and specific hardware all affect the experience, so compatibility and total setup cost are more dependable decision points than a promised speed or picture advantage.

Before you start
- Check the exact device. Look up your TV model and software, or confirm the Fire TV generation, on Xbox’s compatibility page.
- Confirm the app is available. Check the relevant TV app hub or Fire TV app listing in your region; take extra care with 2020 Samsung TVs because reported support dates conflict with broader compatibility wording.
- Verify your controller. Confirm that your specific controller and connection method are supported by the chosen device.
- Check your Game Pass terms. Confirm that your country and current plan include the cloud-gaming access you intend to use, and review any applicable playtime limits.
- Try your existing setup first. If the TV app is available, test it before purchasing a streamer. If it is not, compare a supported Fire TV model’s total cost with the value of the hardware you already own.
