For Xbox Cloud Gaming on a console, choose an Xbox: Microsoft does not list PS5 as a supported device. PS5 owners can instead stream selected PS5 games through Sony’s separate PlayStation Plus Premium service. The better choice depends on which games and platform you want—not on a proven speed or image-quality advantage, since the available service information is not a controlled comparison.
Can you play Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5?
Not as an officially supported device. Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming device information lists supported categories such as Xbox consoles, PCs, mobile devices and selected TVs, but does not include PS5. That means you should not buy or keep a PS5 expecting Microsoft’s service to work on it through a supported setup. The omission is not proof that no unofficial workaround could ever work; Microsoft’s cited information simply does not establish a PS5 route.

Microsoft’s December 19, 2025 Xbox Wire setup guide identifies Xbox One and later as supported Xbox Cloud Gaming consoles. Check Microsoft’s current device page for the live list because support can change.

PS5 has Sony’s own Cloud Streaming service, which is separate from Xbox Cloud Gaming. PlayStation Plus Premium members can stream selected PS5 games on PS5. Sony says eligible titles include selected games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, selected digital games, and select free-to-play titles; availability depends on the game and region. See Sony’s PS5 Cloud Streaming details for current eligibility.

Xbox console or PS5: which fits your needs?
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing Xbox games through cloud streaming on a supported console | Xbox console hardware | Microsoft lists Xbox One and later consoles as supported; PS5 is not on its official device list. |
| Playing PS5 games and using Sony’s streaming catalog | PS5 | PlayStation Plus Premium enables streaming of selected eligible PS5 games on PS5. |
| Using Xbox Cloud Gaming with a PS5 you already own | Neither service makes PS5 the supported Xbox endpoint | Microsoft does not list PS5. Consider a supported Xbox device if Xbox Cloud Gaming is the priority. |
| Choosing based on streaming speed or picture quality | No established winner | Microsoft and Sony publish different connection guidance, not a head-to-head performance test. |
Choose Xbox hardware for Xbox Cloud Gaming on a console
If Xbox games and Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported console are the goal, Xbox hardware is the straightforward option. Xbox Series X is one physical console to consider; check Microsoft’s current product listings and local availability. Cloud access still depends on plan eligibility, the game, supported region and network conditions.

Plans, devices, controllers and connection requirements
Xbox Cloud Gaming
- Microsoft says console cloud gaming requires an eligible Game Pass plan and a supported game in a supported region. Select free-to-play games can be accessed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
- A compatible controller is required unless the particular game supports touch controls. An Xbox controller does not make PS5 a supported endpoint.
- Microsoft says best performance is achieved at 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets. It recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Sessions are available through apps on supported Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, gaming handhelds, smart TVs and streaming devices, and Meta Quest. Browser access is described for MacOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, ChromeOS and Steam Deck in the December 19, 2025 Xbox Wire guide. Consult Microsoft’s current device information for changes.
- Streaming depends on connection, location and device. Microsoft notes possible limitations including reduced resolution, audio outputs or cloud-save-only storage.
PS5 Cloud Streaming
- A PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required, along with an eligible game and regional availability.
- Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum to establish a streaming session. Its recommended connection speeds are 13 Mbps for 720p, 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p and 52 Mbps for 2160p.
The Xbox figures are Microsoft’s stated best-performance guidance; the PS5 figures are Sony’s minimum and resolution-based recommendations. They are not measurements from the same test, so they cannot establish which service is faster or looks better in practice.

How to make the decision
- Start with the games. Identify the specific titles you want and whether they are Xbox games, PS5 games, or available in the relevant streaming catalog. Catalogs and eligibility can change.
- Check the supported endpoint. For Xbox Cloud Gaming on a console, use an Xbox One or later supported by Microsoft. For Sony’s PS5 streaming, use PS5 and verify the game is eligible.
- Confirm subscription and region. Check the current plan requirement and whether the service and title are available where you live.
- Assess your connection and play style. Compare your connection with the relevant provider’s guidance, and decide whether you also want console-local play rather than streaming alone.
What the available evidence does not settle
Microsoft’s and Sony’s service pages establish supported devices, eligibility conditions and connection guidance; they do not provide a controlled comparison of latency or image quality. The choice should therefore be based on game access, ecosystem, device support and your own connection—not a claimed performance winner. Plans, device lists, regional coverage and catalogs can change, so verify the current terms on the linked official pages before subscribing or purchasing hardware.
