Xbox Cloud Gaming’s redesigned browser experience is available now as an opt-in public preview. Open xbox.com/play, sign in, enable Settings → Preview Features, then wait up to 10 minutes for the new experience to appear. You can also try play.xbox.com directly after activating the setting.
What Xbox actually changed
Microsoft announced the overhaul on January 26, 2026, describing it as a refreshed Xbox Cloud Gaming web experience with updated navigation and a more console-like presentation. It is a redesign of the browser interface and product flow—not a confirmed replacement for the existing Xbox Cloud Gaming site and not evidence of a change to streaming performance.

The preview is still being developed. Navigation, labels, available functions and the way the dashboard behaves may change, and some features may be incomplete. Microsoft has not claimed that the redesign improves frame rate, resolution, bitrate, server capacity or input latency.
The existing xbox.com/play address remains the fallback route. Microsoft says users can return there if they want to use the previous interface.

How to activate the new Xbox Cloud Gaming web experience
- Open xbox.com/play in a compatible browser.
- Sign in with your Microsoft/Xbox account.
- Open Settings.
- Turn on Preview Features.
- Wait up to 10 minutes for the preview link or prompt to appear.
- If nothing changes, sign out and sign back in.
- After enabling the setting, try play.xbox.com directly.
Microsoft also provides a feedback control through the profile menu or Xbox Web Guide in the preview. Use it for account-specific problems or unexpected behavior.
Desktop Mode and Full Screen Mode
Windows Central reports that the preview includes two presentation options: Desktop Mode, which uses a more app-like layout with a sidebar, and Full Screen Mode, which offers a more immersive view.
In the observed preview interface, open the Xbox button or menu, choose Settings → Appearance, then select Desktop Mode or Full Screen Mode. These controls are preview UI and may move or change. The modes were documented by Windows Central, rather than detailed in Microsoft’s announcement.

Microsoft Edge may also offer an option to install the experience as a web-app shortcut. That creates a convenient app-like entry point, but it does not turn cloud gaming into local or native execution.

Can you try it without an Xbox console?
Yes. You do not need to own an Xbox console to access the browser experience. Xbox Cloud Gaming supports compatible browsers on Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, as well as selected consoles, smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices and Meta Quest headsets. Device, title and regional availability vary.
Viewing the redesigned dashboard is separate from having permission to launch a game. Most cloud games require an eligible Game Pass subscription, while some free-to-play titles can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
What you need to play
- Browser: A compatible, up-to-date version of Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Safari.
- Controller: A compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB for games that require one.
- Touch controls: Available only in selected games.
- Connection: Microsoft lists 10 Mbps as the minimum connection speed. Its more detailed guidance targets around 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on PCs, consoles and tablets.
- Wi-Fi: Microsoft recommends a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection.
Those figures are not guarantees of smooth play. Cloud gaming is affected by latency, connection quality, location, device performance and network congestion. A faster advertised broadband package may not fix lag caused by distance from a data center or a busy local network.
Which Game Pass plan supports cloud gaming?
Microsoft’s U.S. listings as of August 18, 2026 show three general Game Pass plans with cloud gaming, although catalog size, benefits and availability vary by market.

U.S. prices may differ because of taxes, currency, promotions, eligibility and future changes. Game Pass subscriptions generally recur unless canceled. The official Xbox Game Pass listing is the appropriate place to check the price and benefits for your account.
PC Game Pass is listed at $13.99 per month in the U.S. It is positioned as a PC-focused plan, so do not assume it is the general browser-cloud option for every account or title without checking the current Xbox listing.
Ultimate adds benefits such as day-one releases, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer and enhanced Rewards. Those extras are unnecessary if your only goal is to inspect the redesign or play an eligible free-to-play title occasionally.

Can you stream games you already own?
Sometimes. Xbox supports streaming for select owned or purchased games outside the Game Pass catalog. It does not mean that every Xbox game in your library can be streamed.

Whether an owned game is available depends on the title, region, platform and plan. The same catalog caveat applies to Game Pass: having a subscription does not guarantee that every included game is cloud playable. Check the game’s current cloud-play status on the Xbox Cloud Gaming page.

The Preview Features toggle is missing
Make sure you are signed in on the Xbox Cloud Gaming page at xbox.com/play, rather than looking through a generic Microsoft account settings page. Then try an up-to-date Edge, Chrome or Safari browser and sign in again.
The toggle is enabled, but the redesign does not appear
- Wait the full 10 minutes Microsoft specifies.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Open play.xbox.com directly.
- Return to xbox.com/play and confirm that the setting is still enabled.
If the direct address still opens the old interface, your account or region may not yet be provisioned for the preview. That does not necessarily indicate a browser problem.
The dashboard appears, but a game will not launch
Access to the preview interface does not grant cloud-play entitlement. Check that your account has the required subscription, that the title is cloud playable in your region and that the selected plan includes it. For a free-to-play game, confirm that the title is supported for cloud streaming in your region.

The picture is blurry or the game is lagging
Use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi or wired connection where possible, reduce competing network traffic and compare another supported device. A connection can meet the 10 Mbps minimum and still perform poorly because of latency or instability.
The controller or touch controls do not work
Reconnect the controller over Bluetooth or USB and confirm that the browser and device recognize it. Touch input is title-specific, so its absence does not necessarily mean the preview is broken.
Who should try the preview?
It is worth trying if you already use Game Pass, play on a phone or tablet, use a PC where installing another app is inconvenient, or want browser access without buying an Xbox console. The console-style navigation may also make the service easier to browse from devices that do not offer a full Xbox application.

The bottom line
Xbox Cloud Gaming’s “full web overhaul” is real, but it is currently an opt-in public preview rather than a finished replacement for the old site. Enable Preview Features at xbox.com/play, give the rollout up to 10 minutes, and use play.xbox.com if needed. The redesign may make browser access more convenient, but it does not by itself improve streaming performance or remove the normal requirements for a supported browser, connection, controller, subscription and cloud-playable game.
