Choose a handheld gaming PC such as the ROG Xbox Ally if portable play, Windows applications, multiple PC storefronts, and mod support matter more than console simplicity.
Those choices are not interchangeable. “Xbox console” covers several Series S and Series X configurations, while the ROG Xbox Ally family contains Windows handheld PCs with different processors, memory, screens, and storage. The short answer: match the device to where and how you play
An Xbox console is designed around a television, a controller, and a fixed place in your home. It is the clearer choice when most sessions happen on a living-room display and you want the console to behave like an appliance: connect it, sign in, install or launch a game, and play.
Recommended Free Tools
A handheld gaming PC puts its own screen and controls around a Windows computer. It is the better fit when you want to play away from the television, carry your library between rooms or locations, use Windows applications, install games from more than one PC storefront, or use compatible mods. Those benefits also bring PC-style decisions: storefront launchers, Windows updates, game settings, storage management, and the possibility that a particular game needs troubleshooting.

What “Xbox console” and “handheld gaming PC” mean here
Microsoft’s U.S. console store lists both Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X configurations. Series S listings include 512GB and 1TB versions; the refurbished Series S listing describes the system as digital-only. Series X listings include a digital 1TB version and other Series X configurations. The store page displayed prices of $499.99 for Series S, $599.99 for the 1TB Series S, and $749.99 or $799.99 for listed Series X configurations when accessed. These are volatile U.S. listing snapshots, not a universal or permanent worldwide MSRP. Check the Microsoft Store Xbox consoles page for the configuration and price available in your market.
On the portable side, Xbox lists ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, and ROG Xbox Ally X20. They are Windows handheld PCs with integrated controls, not simply smaller Xbox consoles. The official Xbox ROG Xbox Ally page identifies their current specifications and accessories.

The figures above are vendor specifications or store listings, not independent benchmark results. A 120Hz panel describes the screen’s refresh capability; it does not guarantee that a demanding game will render at 120 frames per second. Likewise, processor names alone do not establish console-equivalent performance. No controlled, same-game benchmark between these handhelds and Xbox consoles is established by the cited sources.
Choose an Xbox console when your priority is television gaming
A permanent living-room setup
Series S and Series X are purpose-built for a TV-based setup. The console, television, and controller stay connected, so you do not need to position a small computer, manage a desktop interface, or move a handheld between a portable and docked arrangement for every session.
Minimal configuration
Console software is curated around the Xbox environment. That does not mean every game is identical or every installation is instant, but the operating experience is narrower than Windows. If your household wants to pick up a controller and start a supported game without choosing among PC launchers, Windows settings, or mod loaders, a console removes those choices.

A known digital-storage requirement
The Series S configurations listed by Microsoft are digital systems, and the 512GB and 1TB capacities are materially different for a large installed library. The store also lists multiple Series X configurations, including a digital 1TB model. Confirm whether the exact SKU you are considering includes the format and storage you need; do not infer it from the words “Series S” or “Series X” alone.

Play with the screen and controls attached
The ROG Xbox Ally family combines a built-in display with integrated controls, so you can play without a television. This is useful for travel, shared homes, or short sessions in different rooms. Battery runtime is not specified in the cited material and will vary with the game, brightness, frame-rate target, power mode, and other settings, so no fixed number of hours should be assumed.
Use PC storefronts, applications, and mods
Microsoft’s announcement describes the handhelds as Windows devices with access to games from different storefronts, ordinary Windows applications, and mods. Roanne Sones, Xbox corporate vice president for Gaming Devices and Ecosystem, described the intended experience this way:
“Because these handhelds run Windows, you have access to games you can’t get elsewhere, so you can enjoy the full freedom and versatility of PC gaming — download games from your favorite storefront, run apps like Discord, watch your favorite streamers on Twitch, and play with your favorite mods — all straight from the Xbox experience.”
This is a vendor description of platform capabilities, not independent confirmation that every game, launcher, application, or mod works perfectly on every model. A Windows game may still require a particular launcher, control mapping, graphics adjustment, or anti-cheat support.
Understand the hardware differences inside the family
The base Ally has a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory, and a 512GB SSD. Ally X moves to a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, and a 1TB SSD. Xbox also lists the X20 with a larger 7.4-inch OLED 1080p 120Hz display and 1TB of storage; the cited specification summary does not state its processor or memory. Those are meaningful model differences, not cosmetic name changes.

Game access: native PC, cloud streaming, and Remote Play are different
Before buying either device, write down the games you actually intend to play and identify how each would run. A title may be available as a native Windows PC version, through Xbox Cloud Gaming, or through Remote Play from an Xbox console. Those routes have different requirements and are not substitutes for one another.
| Access route | What happens | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Native Windows PC version | The handheld runs the Windows game locally. | Confirm that the game has a Windows release and check its launcher, controller support, graphics requirements, anti-cheat behavior, and storage needs. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | The game is streamed from Microsoft’s cloud rather than rendered entirely on the handheld. | The ASUS ROG product information says Cloud Gaming requires a Game Pass membership. Verify the current plan, supported title, region, and network quality. |
| Remote Play | The handheld streams a game installed on an Xbox console. | The ASUS ROG product information says Remote Play streams games installed on an Xbox console. You therefore still need the console and an installed, supported game. |
The distinctions matter for ownership and location. A game you own on Xbox is not automatically a native Windows installation, and a handheld does not automatically provide every Xbox console title locally. Conversely, a PC storefront library may not be available as a console installation. Use the exact game’s store page and platform labels as your final check.
The ASUS ROG product information documents the Cloud Gaming and Remote Play descriptions. Microsoft’s Windows announcement explains the Windows and multi-storefront direction at Windows Experience Blog.

Simplicity versus flexibility
What you gain with the console interface
- A single console-focused environment instead of a general-purpose desktop.
- A straightforward television-and-controller arrangement.
- Clear Series S and Series X product families, provided you check the exact storage and format.
- Less need to reconcile several PC storefronts or Windows applications.
What you gain with Windows
- Access to PC games that have no Xbox console release.
- The ability to use more than one PC storefront.
- Windows applications such as communication and streaming tools.
- Support for compatible mods and the broader PC configuration model.
- A built-in screen and controls for play away from a television.
Flexibility has a cost in attention. A handheld PC may ask you to choose a storefront, install a launcher, adjust a game’s resolution or frame-rate target, and solve a compatibility issue that a console player never encounters. The cited vendor pages do not provide independent usability testing, so treat ease-of-use claims as platform positioning rather than a guarantee for every title.
How to compare performance without misleading yourself
Do not treat the Ally, Ally X, or X20 name as a direct performance ranking against Series S or Series X. The available evidence lists specifications but does not provide a controlled comparison using the same game, resolution, settings, and power conditions.
Use the following practical checks instead:
- Identify the target game and platform build. A native Windows build, a cloud stream, and Remote Play place very different demands on the device.
- Separate display capability from rendered output. A 120Hz display can show high-refresh output when the game and system can supply it; it does not create additional frames.
- Compare memory and storage for your workload. The base Ally’s 16GB and 512GB differ from Ally X’s 24GB and 1TB. The X20’s listed storage is 1TB, while its processor and memory are not stated in the cited summary.
- Plan around power settings. Handheld performance and battery behavior depend on the selected power mode and the game. No representative battery test is supplied here.
- Look for independent testing before making a performance claim. Vendor specifications are useful for identifying hardware, but they are not a same-conditions benchmark.
Price, stock, and regional availability
The Microsoft Store snapshot gives concrete U.S. examples for Xbox consoles, but those figures can change and may exclude taxes, delivery, bundles, or local promotions. The listed $499.99 Series S, $599.99 1TB Series S, and $749.99/$799.99 Series X prices should therefore be read as “what that U.S. page displayed when accessed,” not as a promise of today’s price in another country.

The cited Xbox handheld page does not state a universal retail price for the Ally, Ally X, or X20 and directs shoppers toward retailer availability. Handheld pricing, stock, launch timing, tax treatment, and included accessories can vary by region. Check the exact model number and the retailer’s return policy immediately before purchase.
| Buying question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which country is the listing for? | Currency, tax, warranty coverage, and stock differ by market. |
| Which exact storage tier is listed? | Series S and the Ally family both have materially different capacities. |
| Is the product new, refurbished, or bundled? | The Microsoft page’s digital-only wording is specifically associated with its refurbished Series S listing; do not generalize it to every possible SKU without checking. |
| What is included? | Accessories such as a case or microSD card may be listed separately, and compatibility should be confirmed for the precise handheld model. |
Setup paths for each choice
Setting up an Xbox console
- Confirm the Series S or Series X SKU, storage capacity, and disc or digital format before opening the box.
- Connect the console to the television and power, then pair the controller.
- Complete the on-screen account and network setup, allowing system updates to finish.
- Install the games you intend to play and check that your account owns or has access to each title.
- If you plan to use a handheld for Remote Play later, install the game on the Xbox console first; Remote Play streams games installed on that console.
Setting up a Windows handheld
- Confirm whether you bought the base Ally, Ally X, or X20; the processors, memory, display, and storage are not identical.
- Complete Windows setup and updates while connected to power and a reliable network.
- Sign in to the Xbox experience and install the PC storefronts needed for the games you own.
- For each game, choose the correct route: native Windows installation, Cloud Gaming, or Remote Play.
- Test the controls, display mode, storage space, and performance settings with the actual games you plan to play.
- If you will use a television or monitor, obtain the appropriate display and power accessories and verify that they support your intended arrangement.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by family name instead of SKU
“Series S,” “Series X,” “Ally,” and “Ally X” each cover meaningful configuration differences. Read the storage, format, memory, display, and processor fields on the listing. The X20 deserves the same treatment because its OLED display and 1TB storage do not establish its unlisted processor or memory.
Assuming Xbox ownership equals Windows ownership
Check whether the game has a Windows PC version, whether your entitlement covers that version, or whether you would instead use Cloud Gaming or Remote Play. A console library and a PC storefront library are not automatically identical.
Calling streaming “local play”
Cloud Gaming sends the game from Microsoft’s service, while Remote Play streams a game installed on your Xbox console. Both depend on a streaming path and should be evaluated separately from a native Windows installation.
Using refresh rate as a performance promise
The Ally and X20 listings include 120Hz displays, but the cited material contains no frame-rate benchmark. Evaluate actual game requirements and independent testing rather than treating 120Hz as a guarantee.
Expecting a fixed battery duration
No representative battery-life figure is established here. Runtime changes with brightness, refresh behavior, game load, power mode, and wireless use. If portable endurance is decisive, seek a test performed on the exact model and the games you play.
Forgetting the external-screen accessories
A handheld can be used with an external display when the necessary accessories are available, but those accessories are not the reason to choose a handheld. If nearly all play is on a television, price the complete docked setup against a console rather than comparing only the handheld’s sticker price.
A decision checklist
| If this describes you | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Most sessions are on one television | Xbox console | The dedicated living-room format matches your primary use. |
| You regularly play away from home | Handheld gaming PC | The integrated display and controls are built for portable play. |
| You need Windows applications, several PC storefronts, or mods | Handheld gaming PC | Windows provides the PC environment those uses require. |
| You want the fewest configuration decisions | Xbox console | The experience is centered on the console, controller, and TV rather than a general-purpose desktop. |
| Your must-play titles are Xbox-console releases | Check each title, then choose the device that supports its route | Some games may be native console titles, while others may be available through Cloud Gaming or Remote Play rather than local Windows installation. |
| You already own a capable Xbox and want portable access | Consider a handheld for Remote Play, after checking the game and network setup | Remote Play streams games installed on the Xbox console; it is not the same as installing every game natively on Windows. |
| Your decision depends on a strict budget | Compare exact local listings | Microsoft’s cited console prices are U.S. snapshots, and handheld prices are not stated in the cited page. |
What to verify immediately before checkout
- Exact model name and SKU, including Series S versus Series X or Ally versus Ally X/X20.
- Storage capacity and whether the system is digital-only or has another game format.
- Your country, currency, taxes, warranty, and return terms.
- Whether every must-play game is available natively, through Cloud Gaming, or through Remote Play.
- For a handheld, the included charger and any display, dock, case, or storage accessories you actually need.
- For portable play, independent battery and game-performance tests for the exact model rather than a family-level claim.
Bottom line
The console-versus-handheld decision is primarily about usage pattern, not a simple specification contest. Series S and Series X make the most sense as dedicated TV systems, with the exact storage and configuration checked at purchase. ROG Xbox Ally models make the most sense when an integrated screen, Windows PC access, multiple storefronts, and mod flexibility justify the extra PC-style setup. Verify the game route and the local SKU first; that prevents the most expensive mismatch.
