If your Xbox controller keeps turning off, first work out whether it is losing power or merely dropping its wireless connection. Check its batteries or rechargeable pack, then try a compatible USB connection, pair it again, check for a firmware update, and restart the console or PC. These checks can narrow down the cause, but none guarantees a fix.
First, tell power loss from a dropped connection
A controller that shuts down completely may have a power problem. One that flashes, disconnects, or reconnects may still have power but be losing its link to the Xbox or PC. The distinction matters: fresh batteries may help with power loss, while pairing or wireless troubleshooting is more relevant when the controller remains on.
Controller generation and host platform affect the exact steps and accessories. If you need model-specific pairing or firmware instructions, use current Xbox Support guidance for your controller and platform.
Five fixes to try
1. Check the batteries or rechargeable pack
If your controller uses AA cells, try a fresh compatible pair. If it uses a rechargeable battery pack, make sure the pack is charged and seated properly. This is an early diagnostic, not a guarantee: changing batteries will not resolve every power or connection issue.

2. Try a compatible USB connection
Connect the controller to the console or PC with a USB cable compatible with that controller and host. If it stays connected over USB but drops wirelessly, that points toward a wireless-link issue rather than proving the controller is fixed. Cable type and wired behavior vary by controller generation and platform, so check compatibility rather than assuming any cable will work.
3. Pair the controller again
If the controller stays powered but loses its connection, reconnect it to the console or PC using the pairing instructions for that platform and controller generation. Button sequences and timing can differ, so follow current Xbox Support instructions instead of relying on a universal sequence.

4. Check for a controller firmware update
Firmware is one possible troubleshooting factor mentioned in a Microsoft Q&A discussion about Xbox controller disconnects; that community guidance does not establish firmware as the cause in your case. Check current Xbox Support instructions for the correct update method and menu for your device rather than assuming the same path applies to every console and Windows PC.
5. Restart the console or PC and compare devices
Restart the host, then note whether another controller behaves the same way. If possible, check whether the affected controller has the problem on another host. These comparisons help narrow the issue, but they do not confirm a diagnosis by themselves.

- If only one controller has the symptom across hosts, the controller may need support.
- If multiple controllers show the symptom on one host, investigate that host or its wireless connection.
If the controller still turns off
For model- and platform-specific help, consult current Xbox Support. If the checks do not resolve the problem, consider warranty or repair support rather than opening the controller based on unverified instructions.
A Microsoft Community user reported that disconnections continued after trying new batteries, a wired connection, and updates. That account illustrates why one unsuccessful attempt does not identify the cause; it does not show how common the problem is or establish what will happen with another controller.
