Epic has published troubleshooting for this specific symptom pattern. Its published material does not describe a new, active Xbox controller outage.
What Epic has documented
Epic’s support article titled “Xbox controller not working in Fortnite” covers Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It describes a narrow problem: some actions may not respond, including the D-pad, opening the map, and changing weapons. Epic’s wording is:

“If you are playing Fortnite on an Xbox and your controller is not responding to certain actions, such as using your D-Pad, opening the map, or changing your weapons, you may need to clear your Xbox cache.”

The article does not claim to cover every possible controller failure. If your symptom is different, the steps below may not apply. The article’s own title uses the phrase “Xbox controller not working in Fortnite,” and a symptom-specific way to describe the same problem is “my Xbox controller’s D-pad, map, or weapon buttons aren’t responding in Fortnite.”

What “issue acknowledged” means here
Epic’s support article shows that the company knows this symptom pattern and has a published workaround for it. It does not show that Epic has announced an active incident affecting Xbox controllers, and the support material does not name a spokesperson or give any figure for how many players are affected. Treat the article as a known, documented fix rather than confirmation of a live outage.
Clear the Xbox cache
Epic’s documented procedure applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Follow the steps in this order:

- Turn off the console and unplug it.
- Unplug any connected accessories.
- Leave the console unplugged for two minutes.
- While it remains unplugged, press and hold the power button.
- Reconnect the power cord.
- Turn the console on.
- Start Fortnite, then test the D-pad, the map button, and weapon switching.
The order matters because the console must stay unplugged while you hold the power button. Epic’s article does not say how long to hold the button.

Epic’s guidance for PC is a separate issue. It concerns players who cannot build using a controller, not the Xbox console symptom above. Keep the two fixes apart.
| Platform | Symptom Epic documents | Epic’s documented step | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S | Controller not responding to certain actions, such as the D-pad, opening the map, or changing weapons | Clear the Xbox cache using the steps above | Xbox controller not working in Fortnite |
| PC | Unable to build in Fortnite using a controller | Open Mouse and Keyboard settings and switch “Lock Input Method as Mouse” off | I Can’t Build in Fortnite on PC Using a Controller |
When cache clearing does not explain the problem
If the controller appears disconnected across the Xbox interface and in other games, not only in Fortnite, the Fortnite-specific cache steps will not diagnose the controller itself. Epic’s published material does not establish that replacement hardware is needed, and its instructions do not call for buying a new controller, cable, or battery. For persistent console-level problems, follow the guidance from platform support.
Epic’s known-issues channels are the place to check for a wider problem; the bug-report process is described in the Fortnite Live Issues and Bugs article.

Fortnite can also be affected by changes to the game itself, and Epic’s support pages do not tie this controller problem to any particular Fortnite version beyond the scheduled v42.30 update noted above.
