The feature was reported as rolling out to all players on September 29, 2026, but it is available only in select markets, and eligibility depends on your console and game. You must keep the qualifying disc: this is not an unrestricted digital purchase you can transfer or retain after selling the disc.
What Xbox disc-to-digital does
When you insert and launch an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc on a supported optical-drive Xbox, you can obtain a digital license for that game. It then appears in your Xbox library and can be played on supported devices without the disc staying in the console. Xbox announced the feature on August 26, 2026, and described it as supporting most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games, while noting that more titles would be added over time. Not every disc was eligible at launch. Xbox Wire’s announcement gives the feature details.
The disc still works as before. The new license is an additional way to access the game, not a replacement for the physical disc or a separately transferable digital purchase. Microsoft’s Digital Goods Usage Rules state: “The digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc.”
What you need to claim a license
- A supported Xbox console with an optical disc drive.
- An eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc.
- An Xbox account signed in on the console, in a market where the feature is available.
Xbox’s Series X product FAQ describes the disc-insert-and-play process and says availability is limited to select markets. A Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot read the qualifying disc for this process. If you already own a compatible disc-drive Xbox, you do not need new hardware just to try to claim a license.

How to convert your Xbox disc to digital
- Sign in to your account on a supported Xbox with an optical disc drive.
- Insert the eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc.
- Launch and play the game. If the title and disc qualify, Xbox grants the digital license and the game appears in your library.
- To play later without the disc inserted, select the game from your library on a supported device.
Xbox has not established a universal list of eligible titles or markets in the information available here. A digital store listing alone does not prove that a particular disc qualifies. Try the disc on-console and consult Xbox Support’s current disc-to-digital guidance for the latest eligibility and redemption details.
Which discs and consoles are excluded?
- Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs: Xbox explicitly excludes these generations from this feature.
- Consoles without an optical drive: The process requires inserting the qualifying disc, so a disc-free console cannot claim the license this way.
- Unsupported Xbox One or Series X discs: Eligibility varies. Xbox says technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors may affect whether a title qualifies, and it may add or remove eligibility.
Can you sell or give away the disc afterward?
No—not if you want to keep relying on the claimed digital license. Microsoft may ask you to revalidate eligibility, and if you no longer possess the qualifying disc, access may be suspended or revoked. The license cannot be transferred separately from the disc. The feature is therefore useful for changing how you access a game while keeping the disc, not for turning a used disc into a permanent digital copy after resale.

Does the license include Play Anywhere or cloud gaming?
Xbox says Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming benefits apply where supported. That does not make every claimed title playable on PC or available for cloud streaming; the game and device must support the relevant feature. The digital license also does not remove any peripheral, accessory, or other equipment a particular game requires.

Xbox first announced an Insider preview beginning August 31, 2026. Windows Central reported that the feature rolled out to all players on September 29, 2026. Xbox’s current product FAQ describes the feature but still limits availability to select markets, so “available to everyone” should be understood as the reported end of the Insider-only rollout—not universal availability in every country or for every disc. Windows Central’s September 30 report covers the rollout timing.
