Refresh the sign-in session first, then check account access, software updates, Xbox service status, and—if you use one—a developer sandbox configuration.
What Xbox error 0x8015DC20 means
Microsoft’s maintained Xbox Live sample maps hexadecimal error 0x8015DC20 to XO_E_EXPIRED_DEVICE_TOKEN. A device token is a credential that represents an authenticated device or app session when it calls Xbox services. Once that token expires, the service can no longer accept the session as currently authenticated, so the Xbox app, a game, or another Xbox service may stop at sign-in.

The code belongs to Xbox authentication and authorization errors. It does not describe a failed controller, a damaged console component, a bad network cable, or a defective PC part. The available Microsoft documentation ties this specific value to token and sign-in state. Replacing hardware is therefore not an evidence-based response to this code.

Fix 0x8015DC20 on the Xbox app or a Windows PC
1. Retry the sign-in once
Return to the Xbox app or the game that displayed the code and try the sign-in again. If Microsoft presents an identity, security, or verification prompt, complete it before launching the game again. A single retry can succeed when the service has already refreshed the expired token. Avoid repeatedly entering a password if the account is being challenged; move to account recovery instead when the prompt does not complete.
2. Run Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper
Microsoft says its Microsoft-account Sign-in Helper can identify most account sign-in problems. Open the helper from Microsoft’s account-support pages and enter the email address or phone number associated with the Xbox account. Follow the result it gives you, such as verifying identity, resetting access, or resolving a blocked sign-in. This step distinguishes an expired session from an account that cannot currently authenticate at all.
3. Sign out of both Xbox and Microsoft Store
On Windows, sign out of the Xbox app and the Microsoft Store, not just the game. In the Xbox app, open the account or profile menu and choose Sign out. In Microsoft Store, open the profile icon and choose the account sign-out option. The exact wording and location can change with app updates.
Close both apps after signing out. If the game has its own account screen, close it as well. Leaving one Microsoft account session active while changing another can cause the app and Store to use different credentials, so sign back in with the same Microsoft account that owns the game or subscription.

4. Restart the device, then sign in again
Restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart. After Windows loads, open Microsoft Store and Xbox, sign in to the same account in each, and retry the game. A restart clears the in-memory session state that a normal window close may leave behind; it does not erase installed games or personal files.
5. Install pending software updates
Update the components involved in Xbox authentication before testing again:
- Xbox app: open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates or the available update command.
- Microsoft Store: install any Store update shown in the same Library screen.
- Gaming Services: install its update if it appears in Microsoft Store Library.
- Windows: open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and restart if Windows requests it.
Microsoft does not publish a dedicated consumer article that assigns a particular update version to 0x8015DC20. These updates are practical software-state remedies: they ensure the app, Store, Gaming Services, and Windows are using current authentication components before you test the session again.
6. Check Xbox service status
If the code returns after a fresh sign-in, check Microsoft’s Xbox service-status information before changing local settings. Microsoft’s Xbox troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for an Xbox services outage after sign-in and sandbox checks. An outage can prevent a newly refreshed token from being accepted even when your account and device are configured correctly.
If a service incident is listed, record its status and retry after Microsoft reports recovery. Do not repeatedly reinstall the app or reset the PC while the service is unavailable; those actions cannot repair an Xbox-side outage.

Fixes for an Xbox console
Refresh the console profile session
On a console, open the account or profile area, choose the affected Microsoft account, and use the available Sign out command. The menu name can differ between Xbox dashboard versions. Restart the console from its power menu, sign in again with the same account, and retry the game or app.
If the console displays a verification request, complete it with the account owner’s approved method. A console sign-out and restart target the expired session; they do not indicate that a factory reset is required.
Check service status before destructive changes
When a newly signed-in profile still receives 0x8015DC20, check Xbox service status. If Microsoft reports an outage, wait for recovery and test again. The code’s documented meaning does not justify replacing a controller, changing a router, or resetting the console as a first response.
When the error appears in a developer sandbox
Developer and test environments add configuration checks that ordinary consumer sign-in does not require. Microsoft’s Xbox troubleshooting guidance identifies sandbox mismatch, missing access, and expired test-account access as causes of Xbox sign-in failures.
Verify the selected sandbox
Confirm that the device, development environment, and title are using the sandbox intended for the test account. A profile created for one sandbox may not be authorized in another. Correct the selected sandbox according to your project’s configuration, then sign out and authenticate again so a token is issued for the corrected environment.

Verify title and service configuration
Check that the title or service identifier used by the test build matches the configuration registered for that sandbox. A valid Microsoft account can still fail when the build requests a title or service for which the account has no access.
Verify test-account access has not expired
Confirm that the test account remains enabled and has the required access or entitlement. Microsoft specifically lists expired test-account access as a possible sign-in failure. Renew or re-authorize the test account through the environment’s approved administration process, then obtain a new sign-in session.
If you are not developing or testing Xbox software, sandbox checks are normally irrelevant. Do not change sandbox settings on a retail account merely because the error contains a hexadecimal code.
How to tell whether the session was repaired
A successful repair has observable signs:
- The Xbox app or game completes sign-in without immediately returning 0x8015DC20.
- The same Microsoft account appears in both Xbox and Microsoft Store on Windows.
- Previously available games, subscriptions, or profile data load normally.
- A second launch after closing and reopening the app does not recreate the error.
If sign-in succeeds once but fails again immediately, note whether the failure occurs only in one title, only on one device, or across every Xbox app and console. That pattern helps Support separate a title configuration issue from an account-wide authentication problem.
What not to assume or do
- Do not assume hardware failure. The documented mapping is an expired device token, not a controller, storage, console, or network-component diagnosis.
- Do not buy replacement hardware. No Microsoft evidence for this code identifies a physical part as the cause.
- Do not factory-reset first. Resetting removes local settings and can create additional setup work while leaving an account or Xbox-service problem unchanged.
- Do not keep switching accounts. Use the account that owns the game, subscription, or test entitlement. Switching accounts can make an access problem look like a token problem.
- Do not treat an outage as a local defect. If Xbox services are unavailable, reinstalling apps and changing network hardware will not restore authentication.
When to contact Microsoft or Xbox Support
Escalate after you have tried a fresh sign-in, the Sign-in Helper, an app and Store sign-out, a restart, current updates, and a service-status check. Developer users should also verify sandbox and test-account access before escalating.
Best Value
Include information that lets Support correlate the failed token exchange:
- The exact code:
0x8015DC20. - Whether the failure occurred in the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, a specific game, or an Xbox console.
- The Microsoft account identifier used, without sharing your password or security codes.
- Device model and operating-system version.
- Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, or game version, when applicable.
- The date and approximate time of each failed attempt, including your time zone.
- Whether Sign-in Helper reported an account issue and whether Xbox service status showed an incident.
- For development work, the selected sandbox, title or service configuration, and test-account status.
Never send a password, one-time verification code, recovery code, or full payment information in a support request. Support can investigate the authentication state using the error, account, device, and timing details without those secrets.
Why a retry can work even though the code says “expired”
The hexadecimal value identifies the token state at the time of a failed request; it does not necessarily mean the account is permanently invalid. Xbox Services API behavior allows an expired authentication token to be refreshed and the request retried once. A consumer sign-out and sign-in performs the same practical goal at the app level: discard the stale session and request a new one.

A retry will not solve every case. If the account cannot pass verification, the service is experiencing an outage, the app and Store are using different accounts, or a developer sandbox denies access, the new token cannot be issued or accepted. That is why the sequence moves from credential renewal to account recovery, software state, service status, and configuration.
Quick Recap
Preventing repeat occurrences
- Keep Windows, Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Gaming Services updated so authentication components remain compatible.
- Use one clearly identified Microsoft account across Xbox and Store when a game or subscription is involved.
- Complete account-security prompts promptly and keep recovery contact methods current.
- For development, document the intended sandbox, title configuration, and test-account permissions for each build machine.
- When an error recurs, record its time, app version, and service-status state before changing settings; those details make account or service diagnosis faster.
