You do not need Game Pass to play supported free-to-play games online on Xbox. Xbox says multiplayer access for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player. Game Pass is optional for that purpose; it adds a subscription game catalog and other benefits that depend on the plan, platform, and region.
What free-to-play access includes—and what it does not
Xbox’s plan comparison says “access to multiplayer for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player.” That means a Game Pass subscription is not required for online multiplayer in supported free-to-play games on Xbox. Check Xbox’s current plan comparison for local availability and details.
This access rule does not give you a subscription catalog, cloud gaming, or Game Pass in-game benefits. Those are separate plan features, and their availability varies.
What Game Pass adds
Game Pass provides access to games in a plan’s catalog while the subscription is active and each game remains included. It can also bundle features such as cloud gaming, day-one releases, partner services, and in-game benefits, depending on the plan. Xbox warns that game titles, counts, features, and availability change over time and vary by region, plan, and platform.

What happens when a subscription or catalog listing ends?
Subscription catalog access depends on both an active subscription and the game remaining in the catalog. If your subscription ends or a title leaves, expect to lose access through Game Pass unless you own the game separately.
In-game benefits are also distinct from simply playing a free-to-play game. Xbox lists selected benefits for subscribers and directs users to the console, PC, or mobile app to view and claim available offers. Eligibility and redemption steps can differ by game. Which option should you choose?
- You mainly want online play in free-to-play games: You do not need Game Pass for that access on Xbox.
- You want to try games from a subscription catalog: Compare the current catalog with the games you expect to play, and weigh that against the cost of the plan. Access is temporary and the catalog can change.
- You want day-one releases, cloud gaming, or partner services: Compare plans available in your region and confirm that the feature works on your platform or device.
- You want a particular in-game perk: Check whether that specific game and offer are eligible for your plan, and confirm how and when to claim it.
