Xbox Full Screen Experience is real, but Microsoft now calls it Xbox mode. It is a controller-first, full-screen gaming layer for Windows 11—not a new operating system or a permanent replacement for the desktop. Xbox mode is rolling out gradually in supported markets to Windows 11 version 24H2 and later across handhelds, desktops, laptops and tablets.
Xbox Full Screen Experience is now Xbox mode
Microsoft used Full Screen Experience (FSE) throughout its 2025 Insider previews. In its April 30, 2026 PC announcement, Microsoft said the feature was formerly known as Full Screen Experience and would roll out as Xbox mode. Older Insider builds may still show the FSE label, while current Windows releases may use Xbox mode.
The underlying idea is unchanged: Windows presents a gaming home and library in a console-style, controller-friendly layout, while the normal Windows desktop remains available whenever you need it.

What Xbox mode does
A full-screen gaming home
Xbox mode brings recently played games and your gaming library to the foreground, reducing the need to navigate the ordinary desktop with a mouse. It can surface Xbox games, PC Game Pass titles, Xbox Play Anywhere games and installed games from supported or leading PC storefronts.
A launcher layer, not a replacement OS
Windows continues running underneath. You can switch back to the desktop, use ordinary applications and return to Xbox mode without rebooting. It is therefore closer to a Windows gaming shell than to SteamOS or Xbox console firmware.
Controller-oriented app switching
Xbox mode provides a controller-friendly Task View. Open it with Win + Tab, a supported controller’s long-press Xbox button, or the documented touch gesture on a touch device. Use the left stick, LB/RB or arrow keys to select an app; press A to foreground it or X to close it.

Availability and requirements
Microsoft says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. The April 2026 rollout is gradual, so a compatible version does not guarantee that the switch will already appear on your PC.

The earlier preview documentation is available on the Windows Insider Blog. The preview requirement should not be confused with the current retail rollout: most readers should first check whether Xbox mode has reached their build and market.
How to enable Xbox mode
Handhelds
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Gaming, then Xbox mode.
- Under Choose home app, select a supported gaming home app installed on the device.
- Optionally turn on Enter Xbox mode on startup.
On supported handhelds, startup mode can limit background processes to improve gaming performance. Microsoft does not promise a universal FPS, memory or battery increase; results depend on the device, software and game. Available home-app choices can vary by model, build, market and installed software.

Desktops, laptops and tablets
- Open Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Turn on Enable Xbox mode.
- Optionally enable Show Xbox mode in Task View.
Microsoft says this also adds entry points through Game Bar and the Xbox app. On older Insider builds the page may still be called Full screen experience.
How to enter and exit
Entering
- Press Win + F11.
- Press Win + G, or the Xbox button on a controller, then use Game Bar settings to open Xbox mode.
- Press Win + Tab and select Xbox mode.
- On a handheld, let it start automatically if Enter Xbox mode on startup is enabled.
Exiting
- Press Win + F11 again.
- Open Task View and choose the Windows desktop.
- Use Game Bar settings to return to the desktop.
- On touch devices, open Task View with the documented swipe gesture and select the desktop.
The PC Insider guidance also describes pressing the Windows key to return to the desktop. Exiting does not require a reboot, although a handheld may request a restart when re-entering an optimized startup configuration.

- Only one window is displayed at a time.
- Apps are shown full screen when possible.
- For an app that opens multiple windows, only the most recent window may be shown.
- Apps without full-screen support can appear against a black background.
- Minimize and maximize controls do not change window state in the usual desktop manner.
- Some desktop keyboard shortcuts are disabled or behave differently.
These are design trade-offs for controller navigation, not evidence that Windows has been replaced. A keyboard and mouse may still be necessary for account sign-in, two-factor prompts, launcher setup, file management, mods, updates and troubleshooting.

An aggregated library is not a guarantee of universal indexing or console-style operation. A title appearing in Xbox mode, launching successfully and being fully controller-friendly are separate questions.
- Confirm that the game is installed and on an available drive.
- Check whether its launcher is supported and that you are signed into the correct accounts.
- Allow the Xbox app or home app to refresh its library.
- Expect some third-party launchers to require a mouse, touch input or keyboard for authentication and updates.
Microsoft uses terms such as “supported” and “leading PC storefronts”; it does not promise automatic support for every Steam, Epic, Battle.net, GOG, emulator or custom shortcut. Xbox mode improves Windows navigation but cannot add controller support to an individual launcher or game.

Xbox mode versus Steam Big Picture and SteamOS

Steam Big Picture is usually the simpler choice for a mainly-Steam library. SteamOS offers a gaming-first operating system, but compatibility with Windows-only games, anti-cheat systems, Game Pass PC downloads and non-Steam software varies. Playnite is another Windows option for a customizable multi-launcher library, while manufacturer utilities such as ASUS Armoury Crate SE remain useful for handheld power profiles, firmware and hardware controls.
Problems and fixes
Xbox mode is missing from Settings
- Check Settings > System > About for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later.
- Run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install or update the Xbox PC app through the Microsoft Store.
- If using the old preview path, verify both Xbox Insider and Windows Insider enrollment.
- Allow for the phased market and device rollout.
A third-party feature-enabling script is not a reliable substitute for eligibility.
The shortcut does nothing
Confirm Xbox mode is enabled under Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode, the Xbox or selected home app is installed, and no other application has captured the controller or shortcut. After an app or Windows update, a restart may be required. The documented shortcut is Win + F11, not Alt + F11.
A game is missing
Refresh the library, verify installation and account sign-in, and check whether the launcher is supported. Hidden titles, unavailable drives and custom shortcuts may not be indexed.

Use a mouse, touchscreen or keyboard for sign-in, two-factor authentication, updates, mods or dependency installation. You can still launch the game from Xbox mode, but the launcher itself may remain desktop-oriented.
Who should use Xbox mode?
It is a strong fit when
- The PC is primarily for gaming from a couch, TV, monitor or handheld screen.
- A controller is your main input method.
- You use Xbox, PC Game Pass and supported PC storefronts.
- You want a faster route from sign-in to a game and accept limited multitasking.
Keep the desktop as your default when
- The machine is also a work or productivity computer.
- You frequently manage files, browser tabs, mods, utilities or several launchers.
- You expect a SteamOS-style operating system rather than a Windows mode.
- Your build, market or launcher setup is not currently supported.
Xbox mode is best understood as a convenience layer: a more console-like front end for Windows 11 that you can enter and leave, not a replacement for Windows or a guarantee that every PC game behaves like an Xbox title.
