The game in the headline is Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V). A T3 article published April 6, 2025, reported that it would join Xbox Game Pass on April 15, 2025. “Free” meant access without a separate game purchase for eligible subscribers—not access without a paid membership. That report is historical; it does not establish whether GTA V is in the Game Pass catalog today.
Which game did the headline mean?
It meant Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar’s open-world action game. T3’s Rik Henderson called it, in his opinion, “one of, if not the greatest of all time.” That is Henderson’s personal judgment, not an objective ranking established by the article.

What “free, no strings attached” meant
The phrase referred to not needing to buy GTA V separately at the time if you were an eligible Game Pass subscriber. It did not mean the game was available without a subscription. Access through a subscription also is not the same as permanent ownership: it depends on the service’s catalog and membership.

Which plans and versions did the announcement mention?
T3 reported that Game Pass Ultimate, Standard, and PC Game Pass subscribers would receive access. It described the Xbox Series X|S release as the improved edition and said PC players would get GTA V Enhanced when available. Those details describe the April 2025 announcement; they do not confirm current plan names, regional support, or availability on any platform.
Can you still play GTA V with Game Pass?
The April 2025 report cannot answer that today. Check the current Game Pass catalog for your region and platform before subscribing or expecting access. The evidence cited here does not verify GTA V’s present catalog status.
Rank #2
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
What to check before choosing subscription access
If you are deciding between Game Pass access and buying the game, compare the current catalog listing and platform edition with what you need, and consider whether you want access only while it remains in a subscription catalog or want to own a copy. The April 2025 announcement establishes neither current subscription prices nor current retail availability.
