Which tier should you choose?
Choose Essential if you mainly play on Xbox console
Essential is the lower-feature option for someone who wants a rotating game library, online console multiplayer, and in-game benefits, but does not need new releases on launch day. Xbox describes a 50+ game library across console, PC, and supported devices. If you only play free-to-play games online, Xbox says those games are available to all Xbox players without a paid multiplayer subscription.
#1 Best Overall
- THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
- USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.
- GAME PASS READY — Apply your balance toward XBOX Game Pass Ultimate to play new titles on day one* and access a library of hundreds of high‑quality console games.
- PRE‑ORDER & PRE‑INSTALL GAMES — Use your balance to pre‑order and pre‑download upcoming titles so you’re ready to play the moment they launch.
- NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.
Choose Premium if you can wait for Xbox-published games
Premium is a middle ground: Xbox describes 200+ games, cloud gaming, and online console multiplayer. Its key release timing distinction is specific: Xbox-published games join within 12 months of launch, rather than being included on day one. That timing promise applies to Xbox-published games, not every third-party release.
Choose Ultimate if day-one games and bundled services matter
Ultimate is the broadest option in Xbox’s current lineup. It combines day-one releases, cloud play, online console multiplayer, and benefits including EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics. Xbox describes 500+ games across console, PC, and supported devices. It makes most sense when you expect to use those included features; a larger headline library alone does not guarantee better value for you.

Choose PC Game Pass if you play on Windows
PC Game Pass is the PC-focused option. Xbox describes 300+ games, lists day-one titles, and includes EA Play. The surfaced Xbox FAQ does not list cloud gaming as part of this plan, so don’t choose it expecting cloud access; check the current comparison for the latest regional feature details.
What do the plans cost in the US?
In the US comparison surfaced for this article, Xbox displayed Ultimate at $22.99 per month and Premium at $14.99 per month after an introductory offer. Xbox says subscriptions continue automatically and that the post-promotion price may change. These are US figures, not universal prices, and the cited comparison did not establish current comparable prices for Essential or PC Game Pass.
