In October 2025, Microsoft raised Game Pass Ultimate from $19.99 to $29.99 per month, a 50% increase that prompted cancellations, angry community posts and reports of subscribers trying to lock in older rates. On April 21, 2026, Xbox cut Ultimate to $22.99 and PC Game Pass to $13.99 in the United States. That was not a full reversal: future Call of Duty releases also lost their promised day-one inclusion in Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
So the current question is not simply whether Game Pass costs $30. It is whether the revised benefits, catalog and cloud features justify $22.99 for your playing habits—especially if Call of Duty at launch is the reason you subscribe.

The short version
- Ultimate rose from $19.99 to $29.99 per month in October 2025.
- Xbox reduced Ultimate to $22.99 per month on April 21, 2026. PC Game Pass fell from $16.49 to $13.99.
- Future Call of Duty games are expected to reach Ultimate and PC Game Pass around the following holiday season, rather than on launch day. Existing Call of Duty games already in the library were not removed by that announcement.
- Reports citing Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball say Game Pass lost “millions” of subscribers after the 2025 increase. That is an executive statement reported by media, not an audited subscriber figure published in Microsoft financial results.

The October restructuring renamed the lower tiers and added or expanded benefits around the service. Ultimate’s launch price became $29.99, or $359.88 over 12 uninterrupted monthly payments before tax. At $22.99, the equivalent annualized cost is about $275.88; PC Game Pass at $13.99 is about $167.88. The April figures come from Xbox’s official announcement and apply to the US signal identified there; Microsoft says regional prices vary.

Why long-time subscribers reacted so strongly
A 50% increase landed on the most committed users
The Ultimate change added $10 every month. That hit people already paying continuously for day-one releases, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming and a large rotating library. At the old rate, a year cost roughly $240 before tax; at $29.99, it approached $360. The increase therefore felt less like a minor adjustment than a repricing of the service’s core promise.
New perks did not benefit everyone equally
Ultimate’s expanded package included services and features such as Fortnite Crew, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, cloud-streaming improvements and enhanced Rewards. Those are meaningful to players who use them, but a subscriber who plays a small number of Xbox releases may see little practical value in benefits they never touch. A larger theoretical catalog does not automatically offset a higher bill.
Call of Duty became the symbol of the change
Xbox had made day-one access to major first-party games a defining reason to choose Ultimate. The 2026 policy change means future Call of Duty releases will not arrive in Ultimate or PC Game Pass on launch day. Xbox expects them around the following holiday season instead. That does not mean Call of Duty was removed wholesale: existing titles already listed in the library remained available under the April announcement.

Subscribers feared more exceptions
Community discussions raised concerns that other major releases could eventually receive delayed treatment. That remains speculation rather than an announced general policy, but it weakened confidence in the idea that an Ultimate subscription guaranteed every important Xbox launch.
The product became harder to judge
Renamed tiers, rotating games, delayed first-party access, device restrictions and region-specific features make “Is Game Pass worth it?” an individual calculation. The old shorthand—pay one fee and get every major Xbox release on day one—no longer describes every important game.
What evidence shows a genuine backlash?
Reports at the time described cancellations, anger and attempts to stack memberships before the new price took effect. Tom’s Guide covered the price reaction and subscription stacking, while Windows Central reported cancellation activity and website strain. Those accounts should be read as outlet reporting, not an independently audited count of cancellations.
Posts in the r/xbox discussion and r/XboxGamePass discussion include users describing cancellations, downgrades and dissatisfaction with the changed Call of Duty promise. They demonstrate the themes and intensity of community reaction, not the opinion of every Xbox owner.

In June 2026, Pure Xbox and Windows Central reported Matthew Ball’s statement that Game Pass lost “millions” of subscribers after the October increase. No public Microsoft filing identified in that reporting independently audits the number. Xbox’s April announcement, covered alongside comments from CEO Asha Sharma, acknowledged that Ultimate had become too expensive for too many players and framed the lower price as a response to feedback.
What Ultimate offers now—and what it does not
- 500-plus games across console, PC and supported devices, according to Xbox’s comparison page. Counts and availability change.
- Day-one access to new Xbox-published games and qualifying third-party releases.
- EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew.
- Unlimited cloud gaming, shorter queues and the highest listed streaming quality, including up to 1440p on supported titles and devices.
- Console online multiplayer and enhanced Rewards benefits.
The major qualification is Call of Duty: future entries are not promised on day one in Ultimate. If that franchise is your primary reason for subscribing, the headline catalog size may be irrelevant.
How the lower tiers compare
Premium
Xbox lists Premium at 200-plus games, cloud gaming with shorter queues than lower tiers and new Xbox-published games within 12 months of launch rather than on day one. The comparison material does not list Fortnite Crew, EA Play or Ubisoft+ Classics for Premium, and its Rewards allowance is smaller than Ultimate’s. Contemporary coverage put the US price at $14.99 per month; check the live checkout page because the current figure can change.
Essential
Essential is aimed at budget-conscious console players who mainly need online multiplayer, a smaller catalog and selected benefits. Contemporary coverage listed $9.99 per month in the US. Confirm the live catalog and feature list before subscribing. Free-to-play multiplayer is available to all Xbox players, so a paid plan is not required solely to play free-to-play games online.

PC Game Pass
PC Game Pass is the Windows-focused option for players who do not need console access. Xbox confirmed its US price reduction to $13.99 per month on April 21, 2026. Future Call of Duty releases also lose day-one inclusion here, so PC players should not treat the lower price as a guarantee of launch access.

Choose Ultimate if you are a broad, frequent player
Ultimate makes the strongest case when you play several new releases each year, switch between Xbox and PC, use cloud gaming, or actively use EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, Fortnite Crew and Rewards. It is also the plan for players who value day-one Xbox-published releases and accept the Call of Duty exception.
Choose Premium if waiting is acceptable
Premium suits players who want a substantial catalog and cloud gaming but can wait up to 12 months for Xbox-published games. It is a weaker fit if day-one releases, the bundled partner services or the best streaming quality matter to you.
Choose Essential for occasional console use
Essential is practical when online console multiplayer is the priority, your play time is limited and you are comfortable buying major releases separately.

Choose PC Game Pass for Windows-only gaming
PC Game Pass avoids paying for console-specific access. It fits players who want the PC catalog and accept delayed Call of Duty treatment and the limits of PC-only availability.
Buy games individually when ownership or a narrow library matters
Buying outright is often the cleaner choice if you play one or two releases per year, want to keep access after canceling, or mainly play a franchise that is not consistently included. For Call of Duty, compare the current game’s actual purchase price with the subscription’s annual cost; discounts, multiplayer needs and use of other benefits determine the result.
A practical break-even test
- List the games you would realistically play during the next 12 months.
- Separate games you would genuinely buy from games you might sample only because they are included.
- Compare the retail total of those intended purchases with the plan’s uninterrupted annual cost: about $275.88 for Ultimate at $22.99 monthly, or $167.88 for PC Game Pass at $13.99, before tax and promotions.
- Add only benefits you would actually use, such as cloud gaming or EA Play; do not assign full catalog value to titles you will never launch.
- Check platform, cloud and catalog availability for each specific game, since titles rotate and features vary by region, device and plan.
What the backlash means for Xbox
The episode exposes a strategic tension rather than proving a final verdict on Game Pass. Microsoft wants recurring subscription revenue while publishers still need full-price sales. It also has to serve console, PC, cloud and increasingly broad device audiences without making the day-one promise so expensive that customers leave. The reported subscriber losses and subsequent price correction indicate that the 2025 increase carried a meaningful retention cost, but the available reporting does not establish Game Pass’s long-term profitability or future policy.
For consumers, the practical lesson is to evaluate the promise attached to the games you play—not the maximum number printed on a comparison page. A service can contain 500-plus games and still be poor value for someone who plays one annual release, while a cloud gamer who uses several bundled services may find $22.99 reasonable.

The Bottom Line
The 2025 backlash was real: Ultimate jumped from $19.99 to $29.99, and reported cancellations and community anger followed. Xbox now charges $22.99 in the US, but this is a repricing rather than a return to the old deal because future Call of Duty games no longer launch in Ultimate or PC Game Pass. Choose the plan by your actual games, devices and services—or skip the subscription and buy selectively.
