Microsoft raised the U.S. price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from $19.99 to $29.99 per month on October 1, 2025. That is a $10 increase, or 50%. Existing subscribers kept access until their next billing cycle, when the new price applied.
The higher price came with a broader bundle: more than 400 games globally, Microsoft’s stated target of more than 75 day-one releases per year, PC and console access, cloud gaming improvements, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, and Fortnite Crew from November 18, 2025. But Ultimate is no longer an automatic bargain. Its value now depends heavily on how many new releases you play, whether you use cloud gaming, and whether the included extras matter to you.

What changed on October 1, 2025?
Ultimate went from $19.99 to $29.99 per month in the United States. The change was part of a wider restructuring that renamed Core as Essential and Standard as Premium. Microsoft also raised PC Game Pass from $11.99 to $16.49 per month.
Microsoft said new subscribers would see the new prices immediately. Existing subscribers were moved to the higher price at their next billing cycle rather than losing access immediately. Check the renewal date and recurring-billing setting in your Microsoft account instead of assuming when the new charge will appear.

Microsoft said Essential and Premium pricing could be adjusted in some markets, so these prices should not be treated as worldwide rates. See the current plans on the official Xbox Game Pass page.
What does Ultimate include?
A catalog of more than 400 games
Microsoft described Ultimate as including more than 400 games globally across supported Xbox consoles, PCs, and cloud devices. It also stated a target of more than 75 day-one releases per year.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Those numbers are moving catalog figures, not permanent guarantees. Games can leave Game Pass, and availability depends on region, platform, licensing rights, and time. “Day one” also does not mean every game from every publisher arrives on the service, nor does it guarantee that 75 releases will appeal to a particular subscriber.
Microsoft highlighted releases such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, High on Life 2, Keeper, Ninja Gaiden 4, and The Outer Worlds 2 in coverage of the restructuring. Check the live catalog before subscribing for a specific game.
EA Play and Ubisoft+ Classics
EA Play remains part of Ultimate, giving subscribers access to the included EA catalog and related benefits. Ultimate also added Ubisoft+ Classics, a selection of Ubisoft games playable on supported console, PC, and cloud platforms.

Microsoft said Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew represented approximately $28 per month in combined value. That is Microsoft’s valuation, not a guaranteed saving. It matters only if you would actually use those services.
Fortnite Crew
Fortnite Crew joined Ultimate on November 18, 2025. It includes the Fortnite Battle Pass, 1,000 V-Bucks per month, and other Fortnite benefits.
For regular Fortnite players, this can materially improve the bundle. For everyone else, it adds little or no practical value. A Fortnite benefit should not be treated as a universal $30-per-month justification.
Improved cloud gaming
Microsoft said Xbox Cloud Gaming left beta and that Ultimate would receive the service’s best streaming quality and shortest wait times. It also announced 1440p support and bitrate improvements.
The important qualification is that 1440p and improved bitrate apply only to select games and devices. Cloud performance still depends on your connection speed, latency, device compatibility, region, server demand, and the game itself. Cloud gaming is not equivalent to installing a game locally: some titles may not be streamable, image quality can fluctuate, and input latency can matter in competitive games.

Microsoft Rewards
Ultimate subscribers could earn up to 100,000 Microsoft Rewards points globally—described as up to $100 per year—by playing games. This is not a guaranteed $100 cash rebate. Points are subject to eligibility, activity, geography, redemption rules, and changing program terms. Their practical value also depends on whether the available rewards are useful to you.

How much does Ultimate cost per year?
| Price | Monthly calculation | Annualized total |
|---|---|---|
| Before the increase | $19.99 × 12 | $239.88 |
| Current U.S. price | $29.99 × 12 | $359.88 |
| Difference | $10 × 12 | $120 |
These totals are before tax. Saying Ultimate costs “about $360 per year” is reasonable, but the exact annualized total from twelve $29.99 payments is $359.88. Regional pricing, taxes, promotions, and prepaid offers can change the actual amount.
What do Essential and Premium offer?
Essential: $9.99 per month in the U.S.
Essential replaces Core and remains the multiplayer-focused option. Microsoft expanded its included library from more than 25 games to more than 50 and added PC access, unlimited cloud gaming, select owned-game streaming, Riot Games benefits, and rewards worth up to $25 per year in the Microsoft Store.
Essential is best for players who mainly need online console multiplayer and want a smaller rotating library. It is not the plan for day-one releases or the largest Game Pass catalog.

Premium replaces Standard and is the most important alternative to Ultimate. It includes more than 200 games across Xbox and PC, unlimited cloud gaming, select owned-game streaming, in-game benefits, and rewards worth up to $50 per year in the Microsoft Store.
Premium also includes new Xbox-published games generally within one year of launch, but it does not provide day-one access. Microsoft specifically excluded Call of Duty from that within-one-year commitment.
At half the price of Ultimate, Premium may suit players who want a substantial catalog, PC access, and cloud gaming but can wait for most new Xbox-published games.

PC Game Pass: $16.49 per month
PC Game Pass rose from $11.99 to $16.49. It continues to offer day-one PC releases and gained roughly 50 additional Ubisoft titles, but it does not include the full set of Ultimate extras.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →PC-only players should compare PC Game Pass with Ultimate rather than assuming the larger bundle is necessary. If you do not use console gaming, cloud gaming, Fortnite Crew, or the broader included memberships, Ultimate may be difficult to justify.
Is Xbox Game Pass Ultimate worth $29.99?
The break-even question is not simply whether the catalog contains $30 worth of games. Ask whether you would have bought those games, at the prices available to you, and whether you will remain subscribed long enough to use them.
Ultimate is easier to justify if you:
- Play several new Xbox-published games at launch.
- Would otherwise buy two or more full-price releases during the year.
- Regularly move between Xbox, PC, and cloud gaming.
- Play enough Fortnite, Ubisoft, or EA games to use those included benefits.
- Want the largest Game Pass catalog and value access over permanent ownership.
- Use cloud gaming often enough for improved quality and shorter waits to matter.
Ultimate is harder to justify if you:
- Play only one or two games repeatedly.
- Mostly play free-to-play games.
- Do not use cloud gaming.
- Do not play Fortnite, Ubisoft, or EA titles.
- Prefer to own games permanently.
- Mainly need online multiplayer.
- Usually wait for sales or have a large existing library.
When Premium is the better choice
Premium saves $15 per month compared with Ultimate, or $180 over twelve months at the listed U.S. prices. In exchange, you give up Ultimate’s day-one access and some of its extras, while retaining a broad catalog, PC access, cloud gaming, and a within-one-year commitment for most Xbox-published games.
That makes Premium the clearest downgrade for someone who likes Game Pass but does not need every new release immediately. It is especially compelling if you can wait for games, already buy only a few launches, or primarily want a catalog to browse rather than a day-one pipeline.
When buying games individually is better
Game Pass access is a subscription license, not permanent ownership. If a game leaves the service or your subscription ends, you generally need to purchase it to keep playing, subject to the relevant platform’s rules and the game’s availability.
Best Value
- XBOX GIFT CARD: Buy full digital game downloads, game add-ons, in-game currency, memberships, devices, apps, movies, TV shows, and more.
- DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
- GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.
- MOVIES & TV SHOWS: Rent or buy new and popular movies and TV shows from a massive library.
- PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
Buying games can make more sense when you play only a handful of titles per year, wait for discounts, want to replay games indefinitely, or already own most of the catalog. Another practical option is to subscribe for a single month around a major release, then cancel if you no longer need the service. Do not assume a particular promotion, prepaid-code deal, or conversion method is still available without checking current terms.
How Ultimate compares with PlayStation Plus
Contemporaneous coverage reported PlayStation Plus Premium at $17.99 per month with more than 600 games across its catalogs. That makes it useful context, but not a universal value verdict. PlayStation Plus Premium serves PS5 and PS4 owners and emphasizes Sony’s catalog, classics, trials, and monthly games. It does not offer the same day-one first-party-release model as Game Pass Ultimate.
The better service depends on the console you own, the games you want, whether day-one access matters, and whether you value a subscription catalog over ownership. See the current PlayStation Plus plans before comparing live prices or benefits.

- Open your Microsoft account and review the next renewal date.
- Confirm whether recurring billing is enabled.
- Check the plan name and price shown for your next charge.
- Review the current Game Pass catalog before renewing for a particular title.
- If Ultimate no longer fits, compare Premium and Essential rather than canceling without checking their included features.
Promotional prices, retailer codes, regional plans, and prepaid offers may not match the standard monthly rate. The safest comparison is the price and renewal information shown on your account and the current official Xbox page.
The verdict
At $29.99 per month, Ultimate remains potentially worthwhile for heavy users who play multiple new Xbox releases, use cloud gaming, or would genuinely use Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, and EA Play. The day-one catalog is the core reason to pay for it.
The 50% increase makes the plan much less attractive for casual players, multiplayer-only users, and anyone who values ownership over access. Premium is the strongest downgrade for people who want a broad catalog, PC access, and cloud gaming without day-one releases. For players who buy only a few games each year, buying selectively—or subscribing only during major release months—is often the more sensible approach.
