Microsoft has not confirmed a universal return of the $1 Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offer. Some signed-in accounts may still see targeted introductory pricing, but a screenshot, search result, or third-party listing does not prove that the deal is available to everyone.
The reliable test is Microsoft’s own checkout page: sign in with the account you intend to use, confirm that the plan is specifically Game Pass Ultimate, and check the introductory price, promotion length, taxes, renewal date, and recurring-billing terms before paying.

What Microsoft officially charges for Game Pass Ultimate
In the United States, Microsoft currently lists Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at $22.99 per month. That price followed Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 Game Pass update, which reduced Ultimate from $29.99 per month. The price applies to the U.S. billing market; other countries may have different prices, currencies, taxes, plan names, and promotional rules.

The catalog, benefits, supported devices, and launch policies can change.

One notable 2026 change is that future Call of Duty releases are not expected to enter Ultimate on day one under the policy announced in April. Microsoft said those future titles are expected to arrive around the following holiday season, while existing Call of Duty titles remain available under the stated terms. This does not change how the $1 promotion is verified, but it is relevant when deciding whether Ultimate’s regular price represents good value for you.
See Microsoft’s April 2026 Game Pass announcement for the current U.S. price information and policy details.
Is the $1 Ultimate deal really back?
Not as a confirmed, universal U.S. promotion. Microsoft’s official pages say that promotional offers can be limited to new subscribers, selected regions, and limited periods, but the official sources reviewed do not establish a broad $1 Ultimate campaign available to every eligible account.

Microsoft can target introductory offers to particular accounts, and individual users may see a $1 option after signing in. A third-party report published in August 2026 also described $1 offers for Game Pass Premium and PC Game Pass. However, that report did not confirm a universal Ultimate offer and is not Microsoft evidence.
Several different claims are often mixed together:
- A promotion shown to a broad group of eligible new subscribers.
- An account-specific offer displayed only to selected Microsoft accounts.
- A $1 promotion for Premium or PC Game Pass being mistaken for Ultimate.
- A retailer selling a discounted digital code.
- An old screenshot or historical report being treated as a current offer.
- A student or hardware bundle that includes Game Pass as part of a larger purchase.
Historical $1 Ultimate promotions have existed, including temporary offers reported by TechRadar. That history makes a targeted return plausible, but it does not verify availability in August 2026.

How to check your account safely
- Open the official Xbox Game Pass page.
- Select Join or the relevant Ultimate sign-up button.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that will use the subscription.
- Confirm that the plan name says Game Pass Ultimate. Do not confuse it with Essential, Premium, or PC Game Pass.
- Check the introductory price and the exact duration. Do not assume that “$1” means one month; promotions can differ.
- Review the regular renewal price, next billing date, taxes, payment method, and whether recurring billing is enabled.
- Proceed only if the final Microsoft checkout screen shows the expected offer.
- Save the confirmation email or a screenshot showing the promotion and renewal terms.
Button labels and page layouts can vary by account, device, and region. If the price changes after you sign in or at the final payment step, treat the final Microsoft checkout screen as authoritative.
Who counts as a “new user”?
“New user” does not necessarily mean someone who has never created an Xbox or Microsoft account. The exact definition belongs to the individual promotion. Eligibility may depend on whether the account:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Has ever had Game Pass.
- Currently has an active Game Pass subscription.
- Previously used a comparable introductory offer.
- Has another Microsoft subscription that affects the offer.
- Is billed in an eligible country or region.
- Has been selected for a targeted campaign.
Former subscribers should sign in and check directly. A lapsed subscription does not guarantee eligibility, and an account that has used Game Pass before is not automatically disqualified from every future promotion. Microsoft’s current terms warn that promotional offers may not be valid for all members and may be restricted to new subscribers.
Creating a new Microsoft account is not a dependable or recommended workaround. It can separate game ownership, achievements, cloud saves, family arrangements, and existing purchases from the account you normally use. It also does not guarantee that Microsoft will accept the promotion or that the account will meet the offer’s terms.
What you pay after the introductory period
A promotional subscription normally continues automatically at the then-current regular price unless you turn off recurring billing or cancel it. For U.S. Ultimate subscribers, the currently listed regular price is $22.99 per month, but the amount shown on your checkout page controls your specific offer. Taxes may also apply.

Microsoft generally requires a payment method for promotional sign-up. Before completing the purchase, look for wording that identifies:
- The promotional price.
- How long the promotion lasts.
- The date of the first regular charge.
- The regular price that will apply.
- Any taxes or other applicable charges.
- Whether recurring billing is switched on.
Game Pass access is subscription-based. Downloading a game does not give you permanent ownership, and access normally ends when the subscription ends unless you buy the game separately. Catalog games can also leave the service.
How to stop automatic renewal
To manage the subscription, open account.microsoft.com/services, locate Game Pass, and choose the available cancellation or recurring-billing option. Read the confirmation screen carefully.
After making the change, confirm that Microsoft displays the correct expiration date and no future renewal charge. Turning off recurring billing generally lets access continue through the paid promotional period, but check the date and wording shown on your account. Canceling immediately can change how Microsoft labels the subscription, so do not assume—verify that access remains active until the displayed end date.
Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules explain that recurring subscriptions can continue after promotional periods at the then-current price unless canceled.

Why the $1 option may not appear
If your checkout shows $22.99 or another regular price, likely explanations include:
- Your account is not eligible for that promotion.
- The offer is limited to Premium or PC Game Pass rather than Ultimate.
- You already have Game Pass or another subscription that changes the purchase flow.
- You previously used a similar introductory offer.
- The promotion has expired, been withdrawn, or is being tested with only some accounts.
- Your country or billing region is not included.
- You are viewing a cached search result, social-media screenshot, or retailer page.
- The offer is visible on one Microsoft surface but unavailable after account eligibility is evaluated at checkout.
Do not repeatedly create accounts, use a VPN to imitate another region, or buy dubious “new user” codes. Those approaches can cause account, payment, region, or redemption problems and do not demonstrate that the official promotion applies to you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the plan name before accepting the deal
A common failure is seeing “$1 Game Pass” in a headline and discovering at checkout that the offer applies to another tier. Before paying, confirm all of the following:
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Plan name | Premium, PC Game Pass, and Ultimate have different benefits. |
| Introductory duration | A $1 offer may last 14 days, one month, or another period. |
| Renewal price | The subscription may renew at the regular price, not $1. |
| Billing region | Prices, taxes, and redemption rules vary by market. |
| Account status | Existing or previous subscriptions can affect eligibility. |
| Recurring billing | Leaving it enabled can trigger the next charge automatically. |
Legitimate alternatives if Ultimate is not $1
PC Game Pass
Windows PC players who do not need console access or the full Ultimate package may find PC Game Pass a better fit. Microsoft’s April 2026 announcement listed a U.S. price of $13.99 per month. A third-party August 2026 snapshot reported a $1 introductory offer for some eligible PC Game Pass accounts, but verify any promotion on Microsoft’s signed-in checkout page rather than relying on that report.
Game Pass Premium
Premium may suit readers who want a lower-cost alternative and do not need every Ultimate benefit. A third-party August 2026 report described a $1 introductory period for some accounts and a displayed renewal price of $14.99 per month. Treat those figures as a dated, non-primary observation; Microsoft’s checkout page determines whether your account receives the offer and what it will cost.

Microsoft’s student PC bundle
Eligible U.S. college students can receive one year of Game Pass Ultimate at no additional charge when they purchase a qualifying Windows 11 PC, subject to student verification, product eligibility, supplies, and the offer terms. Microsoft says the promotion runs through August 31, 2026, while supplies last.
This is not a standalone $1 Ultimate trial or a free year available without buying hardware. The cited terms also require a valid payment method and specify subscription conditions, including automatic renewal unless canceled. Details are available on Microsoft’s college offer page and Microsoft Store sale terms.
Buy the game outright
If you want only one or two games, buying them from the Microsoft Store may be better than accepting a subscription that renews at $22.99 per month. An outright purchase avoids recurring billing and preserves access to that purchased game, but does not include the rotating Game Pass catalog or subscription benefits.

When the $1 offer is worth taking
The promotion makes sense if your signed-in checkout genuinely shows $1, you want to test Ultimate features such as cloud gaming or PC access, or you have a specific day-one release in mind. It is less attractive if you only play on PC, do not want to pay the renewal price, want permanent access to downloaded games, or are subscribing for a single title that would cost less to purchase.
Existing subscription time can also complicate the transaction. Buying Ultimate while another Game Pass tier is active may convert or alter the existing subscription instead of producing a clean introductory period. Read the conversion and billing language before confirming.
For retailer codes, check the seller’s identity, country restrictions, redemption deadline, account-history requirements, and refund policy. Avoid gray-market sellers and any listing that promises to bypass Microsoft’s eligibility or region rules.
