Buying games is usually the better fit when you want ongoing access to a few specific titles without keeping a subscription active. Neither is automatically cheaper: compare your local prices, the games you’ll actually play, and the value of any extras you would use.
Compare the games you’ll play, not the size of the catalog
Start with a short list of the games you genuinely expect to play. Check whether each is currently included in Game Pass in your region, on your platform, and in the plan you’re considering. The catalog and plan features can change, so a game appearing in the service today is not a promise it will remain there. Xbox’s plan comparison page lists the current tiers and features.
Then estimate how many months you would keep paying while playing those games. Compare that subscription cost with the prices of the particular games you want to buy. There is no universal break-even point: the result depends on your local subscription price, the games’ prices, and how long you want access.
When Game Pass may suit you better
- You expect to play multiple games that are currently included in your plan.
- You prefer trying games from the catalog rather than paying separately for each one.
- You would use plan extras such as online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, discounts, or other included benefits.
Xbox currently lists Ultimate, Premium, Essential, and PC Game Pass. What each includes varies by plan, region, platform, and time. For example, Xbox describes day-one access for select games, but its comparison page notes that Call of Duty titles are excluded from that day-one feature. Check the selected plan’s current details rather than assuming every tier includes every feature.

If online console multiplayer matters to you, check whether your chosen plan includes it. Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is open to every Xbox player; other games are sold separately, and plan features apply according to the current terms.
When buying games may suit you better
- You mainly want a few named games rather than a rotating selection.
- You want to avoid recurring subscription payments when you are not playing.
- You value continued access to selected games under the terms of their licenses.
Digital games are not unrestricted property: Microsoft says digital goods are licensed, not sold. A purchased game has a license distinct from the access provided through a subscription, and both are governed by applicable terms. Buying can give you a different kind of access from subscribing, but it should not be described as an unconditional guarantee of permanent availability. If you are considering a physical edition, confirm the individual game’s edition and platform compatibility.

Compare the actual cost and terms in your region
Use the current price shown at checkout for your country and plan. Prices vary by region and can change; also account for recurring billing, applicable taxes, and any introductory promotion. Xbox says promotional subscriptions continue at the regular then-current price unless canceled, and recurring payments continue until cancellation.
As a dated example only, Xbox Wire DACH reported on April 21, 2026, that prices in its region were €20.99 per month for Game Pass Ultimate and €12.99 per month for PC Game Pass, following reductions from €26.99 and €14.99 respectively. Those amounts are not prices for other countries. The update also said future Call of Duty titles would no longer join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at release and would instead arrive in the following holiday season, about a year later; existing Call of Duty games in the library would remain available. Only count extras that matter to you. If you would not use cloud gaming, included benefits, discounts, or multiplayer access, they should not make a plan seem more valuable in your comparison.
Check the announced cloud gaming change
Xbox announced that monthly included cloud gaming time is scheduled to change beginning in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Xbox said current eligible subscribers can stream without those monthly hour limits until the change, estimated that it would affect 4% of subscribers, and said additional hours would be purchasable through the Xbox Store, with pricing and details to come. It also said players would be able to buy cloud hours and stream eligible games they own without subscribing. These are announced future terms, not a statement of what is already in effect; consult Xbox Wire’s announcement for the current status.

Refunds are not a substitute for deciding carefully
Microsoft says digital goods generally are not refundable unless an offer or applicable law makes a purchase eligible. Game refund requests follow a separate process, and online returns are not available in all markets. Review the refund guidance before buying; do not assume a digital purchase can be returned simply because you change your mind.

A quick decision checklist
- List the games: Write down the specific titles you expect to play, rather than counting the full catalog.
- Check eligibility: Confirm each title is currently included in your region, plan, and platform.
- Estimate subscription months: Count the months you expect to keep paying while playing those games.
- Compare local costs: Check the current subscription price and the purchase prices for those titles, including recurring billing and applicable taxes.
- Value only useful extras: Include multiplayer, cloud gaming, discounts, or benefits only if you would actually use them.
- Choose the access you prefer: Consider whether you want a changing subscription catalog or licenses for selected games, subject to Microsoft’s terms.
