Game Pass is usually the better fit if you expect to try several games from its catalog, use its included benefits, or want eligible day-one releases on a qualifying plan. Buying games is usually a better fit if you focus on a few titles and expect to return to them over time. Compare the subscription months you would actually pay for with the local prices of the games you would actually buy; there is no universal break-even point.
Start with the games you actually want to play
Make a short list of the games you expect to start during the next few months. Check whether each is available on your platform and, if you are considering Game Pass, whether it is in the catalog for the plan and region you would use. A large catalog is useful only when it includes games you want to play.

- Lean toward Game Pass if you expect to sample several catalog games, value the plan’s other benefits, or want an eligible day-one release included in a qualifying tier.
- Lean toward buying if your list is short, centers on particular favorites, and you expect to keep playing those titles after a subscription would end.
What Game Pass costs—and what the price snapshot means
On Xbox’s US plan comparison page, Ultimate was listed at $22.99 per month and Premium at $14.99 per month after the displayed introductory offer. The page listed 500+ games for Ultimate and 200+ for Premium. These are plan details displayed in a US storefront snapshot, not fixed worldwide prices or a promise that every listed game will remain available. Check the current Xbox Game Pass plan comparison for your region, platform, and plan before deciding.
Tier affects more than the catalog count. The comparison page lists day-one releases for Ultimate and says new Xbox-published games join Premium within 12 months. That distinction does not mean every desired release is included on every tier: check the specific game, plan, region, and platform.

Compare your likely costs
Use the months you realistically expect to pay, not a full year by default. Then compare that subscription total with the current local prices of the games on your list. Count bundled benefits only when you would otherwise use them.
- Write down the games you expect to play and verify their current price or Game Pass availability for your region and platform.
- Choose the tier that actually includes the games or benefits you want, and note its current local price.
- Estimate how many months you would keep paying. Multiply that by the monthly price; include an introductory offer only for the months it applies.
- Compare that total with the cost of buying the specific games you would otherwise purchase. Include any sale prices currently available to you.
- Adjust for how you play: a subscription may be more appealing if you will try several games, while a purchase may be more appealing if you will revisit a small number of titles.
This is a personal comparison, not a guaranteed savings calculation. The result changes with your tier, subscription months, local game prices, catalog availability, and which included benefits matter to you.

Account for access and catalog turnover
Game Pass provides access under continuing conditions: Xbox says access lasts until the subscription is canceled or expires, or the game leaves the catalog. Availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform. If losing access to a particular game would interrupt a long playthrough or make you reluctant to return later, that uncertainty weighs against relying on the subscription for that title. Check the game’s current catalog status rather than assuming it will remain included.
Buying is not a reason to assume unrestricted ownership
A purchase and a subscription are different ways of accessing games, but do not treat buying a digital game as a guarantee of unrestricted or perpetual access. The available Xbox Support result for its Buying digital game FAQ does not establish substantive purchase terms here. For rights and conditions, consult the current store terms for your platform and region.

Remember recurring billing if you subscribe seasonally
Xbox says recurring billing is on by default. If you plan to subscribe only for a period when you expect to play, check the renewal setting in your Microsoft account or console and switch it off if you do not want the subscription to renew. Xbox’s Game Pass service page also notes that benefits and availability vary by plan, region, platform, and time.
