If an Xbox game will not install, or its download is stuck, first check whether Xbox services are having an issue and inspect the game’s status in your console’s queue. Then follow the official Xbox troubleshooting page for the symptom you see: installation problems and slow downloads have separate guides. The cause can vary, so an error code and whether other games are affected help determine what to do next.
Start by narrowing down the problem
Before changing settings, note whether the problem affects one game or every download. Record any error code or message exactly as it appears. Those details help distinguish a game-specific issue from a broader service, connection, account, or storage problem.

Check Xbox service status
Visit Xbox Live Status to see whether a service issue may be affecting downloads or installations. The status page is live, so check it at the time the problem is happening; a past or unverified status cannot establish whether services are currently affected.

Inspect the console’s download or installation status
Open the console’s queue or installation view and check what it reports for the affected game. Look for its current state and any displayed error. Xbox’s installation-status guidance is the official place to consult for instructions on viewing software installation status.

Use the troubleshooting page for the symptom
Installation fails or stops
For a game or app that will not install, or an installation that has stopped, use Xbox Support’s game and app installation troubleshooting. Follow the instructions that match your console and the message shown. A stopped installation does not, by itself, identify the cause.
Download is slow or stuck
For a slow download, use Xbox Support’s separate slow game or app download troubleshooting. A download that seems stuck and an installation failure can have different causes, so use the page that best matches what the console reports rather than assuming one fix applies to both.

Consider storage only when it fits the symptoms
Storage expansion is relevant if the console reports insufficient space or the issue points to drive compatibility. It will not resolve a service, network, account, or licensing problem. Xbox provides guidance on storage expansion cards for Xbox Series X|S and a drive-compatibility tool. Check the official compatibility guidance for your console before buying an external drive or other storage accessory; compatibility requirements are not interchangeable across every Xbox model.

This gives support concrete details to investigate without guessing at a universal fix.
