Starting October 1, 2022, Xbox Games With Gold stopped adding new Xbox 360 titles to its monthly lineup. Microsoft said the benefit would keep focusing on Xbox One games. Xbox 360 games that members had already claimed through the program were not taken back. A separate change, the closure of Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace purchases on July 29, 2024, is a different event with different effects, and it is covered in its own section below.
What happened to the free Xbox Gold games?
Games with Gold launched in 2013 on Xbox 360 and extended to Xbox One in 2014, according to GameSpot’s summary of the program. GameSpot reported on July 5, 2022 that Microsoft had confirmed the end of Xbox 360 monthly releases, with October 1, 2022 as the effective date. A Microsoft spokesperson said:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
“Beginning on October 1, 2022, we will no longer release Xbox 360 titles on a monthly basis as part of the Games with Gold benefit,” a Microsoft spokesperson said.

The same statement said the program would continue with Xbox One titles, and that no other Xbox Live Gold benefits would be affected:

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
“We’ll focus on continuing to deliver Xbox One titles through the Games with Gold program. No other Xbox Live Gold benefits will be impacted by this change.”
The change therefore removed one category of title from the monthly benefit. It did not end Games with Gold, and it did not change other Xbox Live Gold perks as Microsoft described them.
Readers still ask about it. One Microsoft Community post put the question as whether members no longer received “2 free xbox gold games per month.” That is one individual question, not a survey, but it reflects the same confusion this article addresses.

Microsoft’s stated reason
Microsoft’s explanation was given in the spokesperson’s third statement, as quoted by GameSpot:
“We’re always looking at ways to evolve the Xbox experience based on community engagement, feedback and shifting company priorities. We have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing and technical constraints.”
The stated reason is specific to older titles. Microsoft did not say the Xbox One catalog was constrained, and it did not say how many older games would have been eligible in future months.

Context from the backward-compatibility wind-down
In November 2021, GeekWire reported that Microsoft had announced a final batch of backward-compatible Xbox 360 games and attributed the end of that program to licensing, legal, and technical restraints. That is useful background, but it is GeekWire’s description of a separate announcement, not the wording of the 2022 Games with Gold statement.
GeekWire’s 2022 coverage also counted backward-compatible titles: 632 of 2,154 Xbox 360 games and 63 of 997 original Xbox games. Those figures describe GeekWire’s count at the time. They are not a current availability or sales number.
What happened to Xbox 360 games members had already claimed
The October 2022 change stopped new additions. Contemporaneous reporting of Microsoft’s statement said Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles that users had already claimed remained available to them and could be redownloaded regardless of membership.
Rank #4
- The Largest Collection of Classic SEGA Titles. Players will trip back in time with favorites including Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Columns, Eco the Dolphin and four titles from the Phantasy Star series, to name a few.
- Several Unlockable Titles. Included in the collection are arcade favorites such as Congo Bongo, Altered Beast, Zaxxon and more.
- All Titles Upgraded to Hi-Def. The classic 2D style never looked so good! Each title has been converted to hi-def (720p) and will be a blast to play using the intuitive controls of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 systems.
- Massive Multiplayer Options. Friends can play the 2-Player classics together in select games from the same console at home.
That assurance applies to Xbox 360 games claimed through Games with Gold. It does not describe every Xbox 360 title, and it was stated in 2022, not as a permanent guarantee on every platform. Microsoft’s current usage rules treat Xbox 360 game rights separately from Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games, so the 2022 statement should be read as covering claimed Xbox 360 titles, not as a rule that applies to all redeemed games everywhere.
A separate change: the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace closure
The Games with Gold change and the store closure are often mixed up, but they are different. Xbox Wire announced on August 17, 2023 that Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace purchases would stop, under the headline “The Xbox 360 Store Will Close July 2024, But You Can Keep Playing Your Favorite Games.” The shutdown took effect on July 29, 2024.

It did not change the monthly Games with Gold benefit, which had already ended in 2022. Microsoft said previously purchased games remained playable and redownloadable, and physical discs remained playable. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 category page also says the marketplace is retired and that owned catalogue games remain playable.

Backward-compatible titles after the closure
Xbox Wire said hundreds of backward-compatible Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games and downloadable content could still be purchased on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com after the marketplace closed. That statement covers backward-compatible titles only. It does not mean every Xbox 360 game is backward compatible or still for sale.

What the sources do not establish
- No subscriber count or title count for how many people or games the October 2022 change affected has been published in the sources cited here.
- Microsoft did not describe a one-for-one replacement policy. The spokesperson said the program would continue with Xbox One titles, but no rule was stated for replacing each departing Xbox 360 title.
- The 2022 access assurance is specific to previously claimed Xbox 360 titles. It is not a general promise about every Xbox 360 game on every platform.
- The 2022 wording reaches readers through GameSpot’s July 5, 2022 report of the spokesperson. The article attributes it that way.
- The most recent Microsoft statements cited here are the August 2023 announcement and the July 2024 closure. Usage rules and store policies can change, so check current Microsoft Support pages before relying on any specific access rule.
