Xbox hardware unit sales in the United States fell 33% year over year through August 2026 and reached an all-time low in Circana’s measured US series, according to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella. The figure describes year-to-date console units sold—not global sales, revenue, or every Xbox generation worldwide.
What the 33% decline measures
Piscatella reported that Xbox hardware unit sales in the US were down 33% for 2026 year to date through August compared with the same period in 2025. The figures come from Circana’s US Retail Tracking Service, as reported by Piscatella; the underlying dataset is not provided for independent recalculation. GamesRadar+’s report on Circana’s figures gives the sales and average-price details.

“All-time low” has a specific scope: year-to-date US Xbox hardware unit sales in the series Circana tracks. It does not establish an all-time low in global Xbox sales, revenue, or lifetime sales across every market and console generation.

Xbox and PlayStation in the same US period
Circana’s comparison uses the same geography, year-to-date period, and hardware-unit metric for both platforms. PlayStation hardware unit sales were down 25% year over year through August 2026, and Piscatella described them as the lowest since 2013. He called Xbox’s measured year-to-date US units an all-time low. Those historical descriptions are not interchangeable: the source gives different baselines for the two platforms.

| Platform | US hardware unit sales, YTD through August 2026 | Historical description from Circana analyst Mat Piscatella |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox | Down 33% year over year | All-time low in the measured series |
| PlayStation | Down 25% year over year | Lowest point since 2013 |
Piscatella also described the market as unusually fragile, writing that “The US hardware market has not been in a more precarious position since the early 80s.” That is his assessment of the broader US hardware market, not a separate sales statistic.
Why prices and supply are part of the story
Circana reported that the average price paid for a new Xbox console in the US year to date through August 2026 was $529, 26% higher than a year earlier. Piscatella said both Xbox and PlayStation prices were at all-time US highs and that price sensitivity was becoming a real problem. These figures and comments point to affordability as a concern, but do not quantify how much higher prices contributed to Xbox’s unit-sales decline.

Hardware supply is another pressure described by Xbox leadership. In a June 10, 2026 Xbox Wire message, Asha and Matt said the company was unable to make as many consoles as players wanted to buy, citing sharply rising storage-component costs and broader memory-cost pressure. They also said Xbox needed a new business model and hardware partnerships while remaining committed to Helix. The statement provides company context, but does not establish how much component availability affected the Circana sales result.

Why Microsoft’s separate 33% figure is different
Microsoft also reported a 33% decline in Xbox hardware revenue in FY26 Q3, attributing it to lower console volume. That is a company-reported revenue comparison for one fiscal quarter; Circana’s 33% is a US retail unit-sales comparison covering year to date through August 2026. The matching percentage does not mean the measures or periods are the same.
Microsoft reported that Xbox content and services revenue decreased 5% and Gaming revenue decreased 7% in FY26 Q3. Those results cover different revenue categories and should not be treated as hardware unit-sales figures. Microsoft’s FY26 Q3 performance disclosure provides the company’s financial results.

What the figures do—and do not—show
- Established: Circana-tracked US Xbox hardware unit sales were down 33% year over year through August 2026, and the YTD total was at a low point in the measured series.
- Also established: The average US price paid for a new Xbox console was $529, up 26% year over year for the same YTD period; Xbox leadership separately described component-cost and supply constraints.
- Not established by these figures: Xbox sales fell 33% worldwide, Xbox revenue fell 33% over the same YTD period, or price and component constraints alone caused the retail-unit decline.
